The Sky Crawlers Review

Hi everyone,

I finally got back into the groove of reviewing movie recommendations. The requests are for the $5 tiers, but access is for anyone who pledges. I think a working schedule is:

Watching on Thursday

Writing on Friday

Publishing on Sunday

So that hopefully comes out to a review a week, assuming nothing awry happens. If you're a five dollar patron, and like to request a review, just leave a comment here and I'll add it to the
spreadsheet. I used to have it open to edit but it ended up being really cumbersome because I had to approve every single editor.

If you've already asked for me to review, or I've already reviewed something, please don't hesitate to request another thing in the comments, and I'll add it to the list.

First one is the Sky Crawlers. Next one is The Warriors.

The Ace Combat thing makes a lot of sense, really did give me that feel.

I had recently watched it for the first time early this year i think. Really felt like its portrayal of violence as cyclical and ritualistic. The people at the bar watching along and the news reports always felt like they could be easily swapped for the subject of sports. Fun extra tidbit, there was a Wii game, developed by Project Aces, AKA the Ace Combat people. It's actually quite good, and was nice to see them team up with Production I.G. again like they did with Ace 3, which amusingly is also a story about corpo-nations fighting.

Words Maybe

Yeah it's a lot more interesting than I remember first watching it, but maybe it's because I've felt like I watched a bit more stuff, or maybe my tastes have changed. I found it funny that one of the first things you see is the Bassett Hound so it's like, "okay, this is definitely an Oshii film." I know it was 2 hours, but it didn't feel as long as I remembered it being. As always plifal lemme know what you'd like me to cover next and I'll add it to the list!

yay!!! thank you for this, i hadn't considered the omelas connection but it makes a lot of sense!--i find it a long and frustrating film but so rewarding in how i see it encapsulate many of oshii's recurrent themes. glad you found something in it and thank you again!
