Let's make DNB! 20 mins against the clock [video + project download]

So one thing that has been requested a LOT is to make a DNB beat with Ableton stuff only. So I took that and combined it with my recent against-the-clock idea...and I think this came out quite OK!

If you have never tried this challenge, try it: it can be REALLY difficult. You will HAVE to concentrate on the vibe, as the time goes by way too quick when nerding out with details.

Not gonna lie: there's been a few takes I've done and trashed because they didn't feel good enough. Still, even this one is 100% unplanned, unscripted, so I didn't plan for one sound because I want to keep it true and real to the idea.

I want to give you this project too so you can download it and work on it if you wish!

You can download the project HERE (you may need licenses for some of the packs as some samples I think are from paid packs).

Phewww!

Pretty cool track, btw, given the time constraints. I think even as an experiment this way of working can surprise you with what can be achieved in a short amount of time. I’ve done little 1 and 2 hour sprints before, where I try to get to a full first draft of an arrangement (this is working way faster than I usually do!) The results are sometimes better than when I really labour over a track 😂

That’s what making music is in a nutshell…sometimes it comes out great with little effort, but sometimes even when you’re real hungry for it, naaaah!

Haha… actually, it’s quite encouraging to actually hear that even as someone with many years experience, that the first few attempts didn’t quite work.

More of that please. It helps us making quick decisions and moving forward and also it helps to see a pro's workflow. That takes off some pressure in a sense that there is not this 'one path' to follow instead just flow and vibe instead of overthinking. Brings back the fun. if that makes sense.

Ha, I'm definitely guilty of getting stuck on something like EQ'ing early on in the writing phase. I also have trouble with ADHD-brain sometimes, where I end up jumping around to different things without really making any progress. But it seems like this approach of trying to write as fast as possible might help not only with getting a vibe going but also with laying out a basic arrangement.

Thanks, yeah, I agree! I dread these challenges as they can end up sounding quite weak...I mean I've been there :P

Quite like it, think it came out pretty decent considering the time involved 😎👍
