INTEMPERANCE VIII - Chapter 10, Baby Blues

Having a new one in the house while relatives visit. Always fun. The stories of the little balls and the pee in the face are from my own experience with having a boy after girls. Totally true stories. As always, let me know how I'm doing.

Comments

I suppose depending on the time of day that would be true. I used to spend a lot of time driving around that area. I had a house in Sunland and I worked in the general Burbank Glendale area many times as I used to work in the film industry. But the area that is traveled between Burbank and Whiteman is usually not that heavy of traffic, just an FYI in my opinion. Certainly nothing to worry about! And thanks again for all this. I love these books.

Mr. Plastic

I did that because it was closer to where Pauline, Obie, and Tabitha live, thus making their trip through LA traffic easier. Since Jake did not need a vehicle on the ground for the trip, it was no big deal to land there. That chapter is one I will need to do a major re-write of certain sections on for publication due to some errors that conflict with a later chapter.

Al Steiner

I’m rereading the chapters so far and when I got to chapter 10 I realized that I’m not sure why Jake flew into Burbank? I know it’s closer to Pauline‘s house… But Whiteman is only 15 minutes from Burbank airport. Wouldn’t make more sense for him to fly into Whiteman? I know that Burbank has plenty of general aviation flights but there’s so much commercial traffic there compared to Whiteman. The only thing I can come up with is the parking might be easier at Burbank?

Mr. Plastic

Maybe it doesn't need to be in-story, but it seems like about time to ask her if she'd like an assistant.

William Cleveland

Just one note: “He cruised at eleven thousand feet for this flight since he was going northwest, though still operating under VFR conditions.“. Going west, he’d actually be flying at 10 or 12k - an even number. If he’s really flying VFR, it’s an even number + 500 ft, so 10,500 or 12,500.

Dirk Sieber

I love this chapter!

JC

That actually is a thing, and has been since I took flight training in the 70s. The FBO that I trained at had 100s of photos and shirt tails on the walls of the offices. Just did a google search and it seems as it is still a rite of passage.

wayne seitz

He's still hanging out. He was mentioned at the end of the Intemperance tour when they were heading home and was with them the whole time. He just had no on-page contributions.

Al Steiner

Loved the chapter. Thank you. Has Jim Ramos joined the ranks of Greg and Molly?

John Steffen

We'll see how I feel at the time, but I might very well incorporate that into the scene for the final book edit.

Al Steiner

I had them climbing into the car twice in the narrative. It is fixed in the edit.

Al Steiner

Perhaps, but certainly not in the role she played in previous books. That thread has been run into the ground.

Al Steiner

For a flite-sim guy (from below), I got to say you are really only missing the details that only a pilot would catch. Are we going to see Mindy someday?

Surf

Sorry, again, I'm not actually a pilot so I just try to do the best I can.

Al Steiner

What was he trying to say?

JC

She went to another airport first which is the next step after solo. The passage of solo is almost always doing a few touch and goes and then “signing the student off for solo” at the airport you were doing them. Then the student does two touch and goes and a full stop landing. As mentioned below it is a big event in a pilot’s life.

Surf

I'd be surprised if she would be sent to another airport for touch and goes on a first solo flight. I would think they would have kept her within visual range during the first flight.

Jeff J.

Nice!

wulf losee

Not that big of deal, but the flight school I was training with did have a pretty nice ceremony after landing. (actually it was about the same time frame that Laura would have made hers) The instructor cut about 2/3 of my shirt back off, divided it into 2 sections, signed and dated both parts (along with a witness - my girlfriend at the time signed mine), gave me half and pinned the other half on a bulletin board inside the school office. It was kind of a cool recognition!

Jeff J.

I know - my life is sooooo empty :-)

Vaughan Davey

Lofl! Good luck with that. I love my daughters…enough to want to stay alive.,,just for them

Robar

I did figure out what you were trying to tell me as I continued the edit and I fixed it, but it does help me if you're more concise about exactly what you're pointing out when giving an error report.

Al Steiner

I'm not sure what you're trying to tell me here. I'm doing the edit right now and that is not how the paragraph reads.

Al Steiner

It does pay off in the end, especially when they can start mowing the lawn and taking out the garbage and cleaning the kitchen. I do not have fond memories, however, of the infant stage.

Al Steiner

I particularly enjoyed Matt, Coop, and Celia's father getting stoned together. Almost as fun as the time Pauline and her father toked up.

Al Steiner

That's some deep shit, Robar.

Al Steiner

Not actually being a pilot except on Microsoft Flight Sim, I was unaware of this tradition.

Al Steiner

Fill-A

Al Steiner

It was at the end of Book 1, after the actual Grammy awards.

Al Steiner

Yes, several books ago, while she was still married to Greg. I did not make a big deal of it or describe the ceremony or anything, but it was mentioned that it had occured.

Al Steiner

She would go east initially to stay out of SLO Regional's approach and departure path. I probably should have pointed that out to the reader.

Al Steiner

Bummer, dude. You never got pee in the face or barf down the back of your neck or six straight months of torture level sleep deprivation.

Al Steiner

lol, newborns! I admit I wanted to throw my now 36 yr old daughter at the wall her second night old! Last week we each drove separate Porsche Carrera 4 GTS for 90 min at the Porsche performance experience near Carson city. No crying there. All the crying and grow up worth everything in my lfe

Robar

That was one of the best chapters. So many different threads.

Gregory Stewart

It was an incident at, I believe, a pre-Grammy party between La Differencia and Intemperance. I would have to look it up but I believe it is the last or second to last chapter of book one.

SteveZ

That’s what I was thinking last night when I looked up when she was first introduced. I had forgotten her background and age at the time of her hire.

SteveZ

Nice, more reference to welcome to the machine…these days it seems more the the machine is becoming so influential. To many it seems like chaos…unfortunately there is always someone at the wheel. What is hope?

Robar

Is cutting off the shirt tail post solo not a tradition in CA? I know I still have my shirt tail from my solo flight framed somewhere down in my basement.

Jeff J.

Al, which pronunciation do you use for "fish fillets"?

JC

What happened with Celia's brother and Matt? I don't remember that one.

JC

Jake, Laura, Obie, Pauline, and Tabby all climbed into the Navigator and made the short drive to Oceano airport. Followed by Pauline and Obie had digital cameras. Caydee had a few boxes of juice.

Rich Collins

Just curious, but did Celia ever become an American citizen?

Lawson

Notes: A couple times you use "Pasa Robles"; the city is "Paso Robles" Paso Robles is almost due North of Oceano; should Laura be flying North instead of East? (I'm not at all familiar with usual flight paths, so it's entirely possible the route goes East before heading North) "to enter the pattern at Oceana and make" Oceana->Oceano

mdapkins

Thanks for the chapter!

mdapkins

This chapter served to remind me how I made the right decision not to have children. I understand that for those who want children it is a great thing, but I am so glad I missed those early trials.

Vaughan Davey

Happened to me just as described the first day my son was home from the hospital.

Al Steiner

He got little balls! :) I think this was my favorite chapter at this point. (I am father of 2 kids and remember those newborn days)

Leo Sorits

Unfortunately, Elsa will need to retire at some point soon.

Al Steiner

Harvest time is in September. This should be a good one that can start turning into good wine.

Al Steiner

I would not read too much into the Helen angle if I were you.

Al Steiner

Isn't that what she did?

Al Steiner

I was wondering about the winery business partner story arc that was established earlier…

Mr. Plastic

Elsa has been one of my favorite characters you created. After reading the latest chapter, I wondered how long she had been working for Jake. Looks like I2 Chapter 4, approximately 16 years. One of the strengths in your story telling, besides the main characters, is your ability to weave minor characters’ arcs into the greater story.

SteveZ

I was wondering how the Winery is going?

James Harrold

I laughed at Caydee’s sibling quips regarding her brother. You nailed that one perfectly in my experience. Also had to chuckle when Maria and Roberto said that they wanted to live nearby and recalling Celia’s avoidance of mass. Great chapter. Thanks for posting the latest

SteveZ

Interesting; I feel you may have opened the door to a quartet.

Tsysin

A TCAS system does not give lateral guidance. Only climb or decent which is also controlled by another TCAS equipped aircraft. Laura would more than likely only do three touch and goes at the local airport for her first solo.
