Pokemon: Resurgence Chapter 64

Hi all,

Here’s the next chapter. Lucas discovers a shocking secret about the church, and it puts him in danger.

Chapter 64

Sir Alistair surveyed the hellscape before him. Waves of mutated Rattata crashed against their dwindling defences, an endless sea of gnashing teeth and glowing crimson eyes. The knights' Pokemon fought with desperate valour, but fatigue had set in quickly under the relentless assault.

"Bloody hell, there's no end to them!" Alistair shouted over the cacophony of battle, wiping sweat from his brow. "How did the horde grow to be this large?"

Thousands of Rattata swarmed across the ground. Alistair squinted, trying to comprehend how they could have reproduced so rapidly within the confines of the area surrounding the laboratory. Surely they would have exhausted their food supply long before reaching such numbers. What crucial detail had they overlooked?

Beside him, an Ampharos unleashed a devastating Thunderbolt, the electricity crackling in the dry air as it fried several mutated rodents. Yet, for every Rattata that fell, five more seemed to take its place.

A blood-curdling scream pierced the din. Alistair whirled to see young Squire Cedric, barely seventeen, dragged down by a tide of Rattata. The boy's terrified eyes locked with Alistair's for a split second before he disappeared beneath a writhing mass of fur and claws. Alistair's stomach churned as Cedric's screams were abruptly silenced, lost beneath the relentless tide.

"Fall back!" Commander Tristan bellowed, his voice hoarse from hours of shouting orders. "Regroup at the lab entrance!"

The knights retreated in tight formation, their remaining Pokemon providing what cover they could. Alistair's Gallade materialised beside him, its blades flashing as it cut down Rattata after Rattata. Each swing left a trail of bisected rodents, but it wasn't enough to stem the tide.

"This is utter madness," Elara muttered beside him, her voice trembling. "We're all going to die here."

Alistair's mind raced. There had to be a way out of this nightmare. His gaze fell upon the lab entrance, and suddenly, he remembered the briefing.

"The beacon," he whispered. Then louder, "The beacon! It's keeping them in the  area!"

Commander Tristan turned, his face etched with grim determination. "What are you proposing, Sir Alistair?"

"I'll go in," Alistair said. "Find the beacon, shut it down. It might be our only chance."

Tristan hesitated for a split second, then nodded. "Go. We'll hold them off as long as we can."

Alistair turned to his faithful Gallade. "Stay here, old friend. They need you more than I do."

With a final salute to his brothers and sisters in arms, Alistair wrenched open the lab door and plunged into the darkness beyond.

Alistair's boots echoed on the metal floor as he ran, guided by instinct and desperation. He burst into the main room, and immediately noticed the reinforced door at the far end.

"Thank Arceus," he breathed.

The door was locked, but Alistair was beyond such obstacles now. He brought his sword down on the control panel, sparks flying as he hacked at it again and again. With a final, resounding crack, the door slid open.

Inside, a cylindrical device pulsed with an eerie, green light. Alistair approached it cautiously, his eyes scanning for any sign of a shutdown mechanism.

A crash from behind made him spin around. The sounds of battle grew louder, punctuated by inhuman squeals and scratching claws.

"No time," Alistair muttered.

He raised his sword and brought it down on the beacon with all his might. The metal casing crumpled under the force of the blow. Again and again, he struck, each impact sending showers of sparks into the air.

With a final, ear-splitting crack, the beacon went dark.

For a moment, silence reigned. Then, an otherworldly shriek filled the air, so loud it made Alistair's teeth rattle. The Rattata were no longer bound by the beacon's influence.

A smile of grim satisfaction crossed Alistair's face. He'd done it. His comrades might stand a chance now.

The victory was short-lived. A tide of fur and teeth poured through the open door, red eyes fixed on the lone Knight. Alistair raised his sword, knowing it was futile.

The Rattata swarmed him, their combined weight driving him to the ground. Alistair's world became a blur of pain and suffocating pressure. His last conscious thought was a prayer for his fellow knights.

Moments earlier, the tide of battle outside had shifted dramatically. The Rattata abruptly halted their attack, their movements becoming erratic and unfocused. For a moment, the knights dared to hope. The mutated Pokemon began pouring into the forest, their shrieks filling the air.

Commander Tristan watched as the Rattata stream headed southeast. His blood ran cold as he realised their destination.

"They are heading for the city," he breathed. “What have we done?”

The remaining knights gathered around him, their faces pale with shock and exhaustion. But there was no time for rest. Some of the Rattata turned their attention back to the knights.

"Form a circle!" Tristan shouted. "Protect each other's backs!"

The knights complied, drawing their swords and summoning what little strength remained in their Pokemon. But it was a futile effort. The Rattata swarmed them from all sides, an unstoppable tide of teeth and claws.

Elara fell first, her screams cut short as she disappeared beneath a wave of furry bodies. Sir Gawain and his Gallade fought back-to-back, felling dozens of Rattata before succumbing to sheer numbers.

One by one, the knights fell. Their valiant Pokemon, exhausted from hours of battle, could no longer protect them. The air filled with the sounds of tearing flesh and screams.

Commander Tristan was the last to fall. He managed to get a message out to the church, knowing that they had an urgent situation on their hands. But it wasn’t something he had to be concerned about anymore.

Bishop Castor paced the length of his office, his pristine robes swishing with each agitated step. The antique grandfather clock in the corner ticked away the seconds, each chime grating on his frayed nerves.

His mobile buzzed on the mahogany desk. Castor snatched it up, recognising Commander Tristan's number.

"Report," he barked.

Tristan's voice crackled through the speaker, strained and breathless. "Your Grace, we've... we've failed. The beacon is destroyed. The Rattata... they're free."

Castor froze. "What do you mean, 'free'?"

"They're... heading towards Viridian City. Thousands of them. We can't stop—" Tristan's words cut off abruptly, replaced by a blood-curdling scream and the sound of tearing fabric.

The line went dead.

Castor stared at the phone, his mind reeling. This couldn't be happening. He'd planned for every contingency, and accounted for every variable. How had it all gone so terribly wrong?

The problem had become too much to solve on his own. The commander hadn’t mentioned anything about the intruder. Had he been silenced? That would be the best-case scenario, but he couldn’t make any assumptions because there was so much at stake. If the intruder escaped, he could have already told others about the incident, creating a major headache for the church.

With trembling fingers, he dialled a number he'd hoped never to use. The phone rang once, twice, then—

"Speak." The Pope's voice, cold and imperious, filled the room.

Castor swallowed hard. "Your Holiness, I... I regret to inform you that we have a situation at the Viridian Forest facility."

"Explain."

Castor recounted the events, his voice growing more strained with each passing second. He spoke of the intruder, the knights' failed assault, and the potential threat to Viridian City.

Silence followed his report. Castor held his breath, sweat beading on his brow.

"You useless imbecile." The Pope's words dripped with venom. "I entrusted you with one simple task, and you've managed to turn it into a catastrophe of biblical proportions."

"Your Holiness, I—"

"Silence!" The Pope's voice thundered through the speaker. "You've demonstrated your incompetence quite thoroughly, Castor. I will handle this situation myself."

Castor's stomach churned. "What... what would you have me do, Your Holiness?"

"You've done quite enough," the Pope spat. "Stay put. Touch nothing. Say nothing. I'll deal with you once this mess is contained."

The line went dead, leaving Castor alone in the sudden, oppressive silence of his office.

He slumped into his chair, head in his hands. Years of careful planning, meticulous manipulation, all undone in a single night. And now, the Pope himself was stepping in.

Castor knew what that meant. The Pope's methods were... extreme, to say the least. Everything and everyone who knew anything about the facility was about to disappear.

He reached for the bottle of brandy in his desk drawer. It was going to be a long day.

Lucas clung to Saphira's back as they soared through the sky, the wind whipping his hair. His heart still raced from their narrow escape. When he received a message from Icarus, he grew confused. Glancing back, he saw the pursuing Pokemon had halted their chase, banking sharply to return to the laboratory.

"That's odd," he muttered. "Why did they stop pursuing me? Did the knights run into some trouble?”

It was possible that they underestimated the scope of the problem and were now facing a crisis. Whatever the case may be, it wasn’t his problem. He needed to get back to Viridian City before the church summoned reinforcements and tried to silence him.

A few minutes later, a thunderous boom shook the air. Lucas instinctively ducked, his grip on Saphira tightening. "Bloody hell! What was that?"

He turned, his eyes widening at the sight of a massive plume of smoke rising from the direction of the lab. The dark cloud billowed upwards, stark against the clear blue sky.

"Saphira, stop," Lucas commanded. They hovered, watching the ominous smoke climb higher. "What is going on back there?"

Before he could ponder further, a flash of movement caught his eye. He whirled around, nearly losing his balance on Saphira's back. Floating before them was a small, fairy-like Pokemon. Its body was blue and grey, with two tails each tipped with a red gem. Its eyes, large and piercing, seemed to bore into Lucas's very soul.

Despite its disarming appearance, he could tell that this interaction was not going to be a pleasant one.

“Not good!” Saphira and Icarus shouted over the bond.

Saphira attempted to flee, but Azelf easily pursued them, forcing her to abandon the plan. Icarus screeched and flew in front of Saphira to try and protect them, but it was a futile effort and everyone knew it.

With trembling hands, Lucas activated his Insight skill, to see what he was dealing with.

Lucas' mind reeled, struggling to comprehend the implications. Azelf, the secret puppet master behind the Church of Arceus?

The more he read Azelf's parameters, the clearer it became. Azelf possessed an unusual trait that enabled it to learn from those who believed in the people it controlled. This must include the Pope, the bishops of the church, and possibly others.

With the church spread across the globe and millions upon millions of followers, Azelf could earn experience points passively and without much effort. It explained why it was the highest level he had ever seen among the legendaries. It was ironic that it had built a church in Arceus' honour, but this was also the action that had strained its relationship with him. Or so he assumed. But it had overcome the challenge of breaking through to such a high level, so it probably didn’t care about its relationship with Arceus. Especially since Arceus had withdrawn from the world.

Azelf's eyes narrowed, a flicker of curiosity dancing across its features. The twin tails, each tipped with a vibrant red gem, swayed gently in an unfelt breeze.

"Interesting," Azelf's voice echoed in Lucas's mind, rich and sonorous. "You possess an unusual energy. Ah, you must be the human Arceus plucked from another world."

Cold sweat beaded on Lucas’ brow, and he tightened his grip on Saphira. The Dragonair tensed beneath him, sensing her trainer's distress. He opened his mouth to speak, but his throat constricted, words failing him.

Azelf continued, its psychic voice tinged with amusement. "I sense the touch of other legendaries upon you. My, you've been busy, haven't you?"

"What do you want with me?"

“It's rather unfortunate that you, of all humans, chose to meddle in the affairs of the church. However, there's no need for alarm. I won't kill you."

Lucas wasn’t comforted by those words.

"No," Azelf continued, its eyes beginning to glow with an eerie blue light. "You're far too valuable for that. Instead, you'll serve a greater purpose."

"You can't mean-"

"Oh, but I do," Azelf interrupted. "I don't know what abilities Arceus bestowed upon you, but rest assured, they won't protect you from my control."

Before Lucas could react, a searing pain lanced through his skull. It felt as if his brain was being split apart, each neuron set aflame. He clutched his head, fingers digging into his scalp as he cried out in agony. Azelf's psychic assault battered against his consciousness, relentless and unyielding.

Through the haze of pain, Lucas heard Saphira's roar of defiance. The Dragonair twisted beneath him, her scales bristling with barely contained energy as she prepared to launch a Dragon Breath at Azelf.

"No!" Lucas gasped, fighting through the agony. His vision swam, Azelf's form blurring before him. "Saphira, get back!"

With tremendous effort, he raised his head, locking eyes with Azelf. The legendary's gaze was cold, calculating, devoid of mercy.

A rush of wind announced Icarus' arrival. The Mega Pidgeot swooped in, his massive wings stirring up a gale as he approached. His talons were extended, razor-sharp and ready to defend his trainer. Azelf's eyes flicked towards the approaching Pokemon, a look of mild annoyance crossing its features.

With a casual flick of its tail, Azelf unleashed a burst of psychic energy. The attack struck Icarus mid-dive, a ripple of force distorting the air. Icarus let out a pained screech as the energy engulfed him, his majestic form tumbling through the air like a rag doll. Feathers scattered in the wind as he plummeted towards the ground far below.

"Icarus!" Lucas cried out, helpless to save his faithful companion. He reached out futilely, as if he could somehow catch Icarus from this distance.

The distraction cost him dearly. Azelf's psychic assault redoubled, and Lucas felt his mental defences crumbling like sand against a tidal wave. Darkness crept in at the edges of his vision as the pain threatened to overwhelm him. His grip on Saphira loosened, and for a terrifying moment, he thought he might fall.

Just as Lucas felt his consciousness slipping away, a brilliant flash of pink light erupted before him. The psychic pressure in his mind eased suddenly, and he gasped in relief, gulping in air as if he'd been underwater. He blinked rapidly, trying to clear the spots from his vision.

Two new figures hovered in the air between him and Azelf. One, small and pink, radiated a gentle, soothing aura that seemed to push back the encroaching darkness in Lucas's mind. The other, taller and more imposing, crackled with barely contained power, its purple tail lashing back and forth.

"Mew," Lucas breathed, recognising the small feline Pokemon. His gaze shifted to the larger figure, eyes widening in recognition. "And... Mewtwo?"

Azelf's eyes narrowed at the interruption. The three of them hovered in mid-air, and their expressions indicated that they were conversing. It did not appear to be going well, however.

“Get out of here,” Mew said, and Lucas didn’t waste time asking for an explanation.

Saphira retreated quickly as the sky erupted in a whirlpool of psychic energy. Mew and Mewtwo squared off against Azelf, their combined power crackling through the air like lightning.

Mewtwo struck first, hurling a massive Shadow Ball at Azelf. The attack tore through the air, but Azelf dodged with preternatural speed, the attack barely singeing its tail. Mew darted in, unleashing a barrage of Swift stars. Azelf raised a shimmering psychic barrier, the stars exploding harmlessly against it.

The air around Azelf distorted as it launched a devastating psychic attack. Mewtwo countered with its own psychic blast, the two forces colliding in a thunderous explosion that sent shockwaves rippling across the sky. Trees below bent and swayed under the onslaught of raw power.

Sapphira cried out as she was blown backwards. Lucas hung on for dear life as she flipped through the air several times before regaining control. As the battle raged on, she continued to retreat, knowing that if they stayed, they would die.

Mew slipped past Azelf's defences. Its tail glowed with the metallic sheen of Iron Tail, slamming into Azelf's side with bone-crushing force. Azelf reeled, its concentration faltering for a split second. Mewtwo's eyes flashed, and suddenly Azelf found itself trapped in a swirling vortex of darkness—a Night Shade attack of unparalleled power.

Azelf shrieked, its psychic energy lashing out wildly. Trees below were uprooted, the very earth trembling under the onslaught of its unfocused power. Rocks and debris flew through the air, caught in the psychic maelstrom.

Mew and Mewtwo pressed their advantage, moving in perfect synchronisation. Side by side, the two unleashed twin Psystrikes, the attacks slamming into Azelf with devastating force.

Azelf plummeted from the sky, trailing wisps of psychic energy. It caught itself mere metres from the ground, its red gems pulsing with an angry light. The legendary Pokemon began to glow, before it shot upwards like a rocket, its form wreathed in destructive energy. Mew and Mewtwo braced themselves, raising their strongest psychic barriers. The impact was cataclysmic. A blinding flash lit up the sky, followed by a thunderous boom that echoed for miles. The shockwave kicked up a massive dust cloud.

Lucas could only watch in awe from a safe distance as the fight went on for the next several minutes. It was hard to comprehend the level of destruction on display. All three Pokemon weren’t holding back, and it was turning the surrounding forest into a wasteland.

Despite being at a disadvantage, Azelf held its own and even managed to strike its opponents. Regardless, it was clear that continuing to fight two legendary Pokemon at once required a lot of effort, and it began to slow down.

Mewtwo focused all its power into a single, devastating Psystrike. The attack caught Azelf square in the chest, sending it spiralling through the air.

Mew followed up with an Aura Sphere, the fighting-type move catching Azelf off guard. The Lake Guardian let out a pained cry as the attack connected, leaving a smoking wound on its side. With a flash of light, it vanished, teleporting away to safety.

The forest below lay in ruins, a testament to the titanic battle that had just taken place. Scorched earth, uprooted trees, and deep furrows in the ground marked where psychic attacks had gone astray.

Lucas breathed a sigh of relief. It was hard to imagine what would have happened to him if Mew and Mewtwo hadn’t shown up. Mewtwo's assistance was unexpected, but he wasn’t going to question it.

His eyes widened as he remembered. "Icarus!"

Saphira descended quickly, landing close to where Icarus had fallen. It took him a moment to find Icarus, who was half-buried under a tree. Lucas scrambled Saphira's back and dashed to Icarus' side. He had returned to his regular form after being struck by Azelf. As he felt Icarus's steady breathing, a sense of relief washed over him. He quickly returned Icarus to his pokeball.

Mew and Mewtwo appeared beside Lucas.

"I can't thank you enough," Lucas said. "If you hadn't shown up when you did..."

Mewtwo growled. "Do not misunderstand," it said, its telepathic voice cool and detached. "I merely repaid the debt I owed you. We are even now."

Before Lucas could respond, Mewtwo vanished in a flash of light, teleporting away without another word.

Lucas shrugged. "I will accept that. At least Mewtwo knows how to show gratitude.”

Mew shook its head, an almost human gesture of exasperation. "Azelf is critically injured. The wounds inflicted by our combined attacks will not heal easily or quickly. You should be safe from it for the time being. But I will be watching just in case."

Lucas nodded, processing this information. A question nagged at him, one he couldn't ignore. "Mew, did you know? About Azelf being behind the church?"

Mew didn’t respond. Instead, it changed the subject abruptly. "There's something you need to know. The horde of Rattata... they've escaped."

Lucas felt his blood run cold. "Escaped? What do you mean?"

"The beacon containing them was destroyed," Mew explained. "They're no longer bound to the area around the laboratory. They're on the move, and they're heading in your direction."

The implications struck Lucas like a physical blow. If the Rattata had escaped, the knights were probably already dead. Furthermore, the mutant Rattata swarm was heading towards Viridian City. He opened his mouth to ask more questions, but Mew had already disappeared.

"I'd wager Mew knew about Azelf's involvement with the church all along," Lucas muttered. "What a bloody mess."

Salem materialised beside him. If Lucas didn't know the Pokemon better, he'd have sworn Salem looked a tad sheepish. The ghost-type must have retreated when Azelf appeared, though Lucas hadn't noticed in the chaos.

"No need to feel guilty," Lucas assured him. "Retreating was the smart play. You'd have been no match for Azelf."

Salem nodded, his zippered mouth stretching into that familiar, unsettling grin.

"Are you implying that Icarus and I are stupid?" Saphira's mental voice cut in, her tail flicking dangerously.

Lucas reached out, running his hand soothingly along her scales. "Not at all, love. You're my partner; I expected you'd try to help. I'm grateful for it."

Saphira's posture relaxed, her head bobbing in a regal nod of acknowledgement.

"Right then," Lucas said, hauling himself onto Saphira's back. "We've got a city to warn. Let's get a move on."

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Lucas and Saphira descended towards Viridian City. As they approached, Lucas's eyes widened at the scene unfolding below. The city gates bustled with activity, Police and Rangers mobilising en masse. Familiar faces dotted the crowd—everyone he'd called for help had arrived.

Saphira touched down near the front gate. Lucas had barely dismounted when a blur of motion caught his eye. Sabrina rushed forward, throwing her arms around him in a fierce embrace.

"You reckless idiot," she muttered into his shoulder, her voice a mixture of relief and exasperation. "I thought I told you not to play hero."

Lucas opened his mouth to respond, but their reunion was cut short as Professor Oak, Mayor Cassidy, Officer Jenny, and the Elite Four approached.

"Lucas," Oak said, his brow furrowed with concern. "What in blazes is going on?"

Taking a deep breath, Lucas recounted his harrowing experience. He spoke of the abandoned laboratory, the mutated Rattata, and the tragic fate of the Church knights. The gathered crowd listened in stunned silence, their faces growing grimmer with each passing moment.

"Dammit," Bruno of the Elite Four muttered. "A horde of super-powered Rattata? Sounds like something out of a bad horror film."

"I assure you, it's all too real," Lucas replied. He purposefully omitted any mention of Azelf, deciding that particular revelation could wait for a more appropriate time.

Professor Oak stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Fighting this horde in the forest would be suicide. We'd be at a severe disadvantage, vulnerable to ambush at every turn due to the terrain."

Lance nodded in agreement. "The Professor's right. We need to face them on our terms. Either from the air or on open ground where we can see them coming."

"The fields outside the city," Mayor Cassidy interjected. "There's plenty of space between the forest edge and the city walls. We could make our stand there."

Officer Jenny's eyes lit up with understanding. "Yes, that could work. We could set up defensive lines, and create choke points to funnel the Rattata into more manageable groups."

"We need to consider evacuation plans for the civilians,” Lorelei added. “If our defence fails, we can't leave them trapped in the city."

Sabrina nodded. "We should also consider using some of the local trainers. Many of them have strong Pokemon that could bolster our forces."

"Right then," Lance said, his voice carrying the weight of authority. "We don't have much time. Let's get to work. Sabrina and Lucas, coordinate with the local trainers. Mayor Cassidy can oversee the civilian evacuation. Jenny, have the Police and Rangers start setting up those defensive lines."

As the group continued their preparations, a familiar voice cut through the commotion. "Well, well. Looks like I've arrived just in time for the excitement."

Lucas turned to see a woman striding towards them, her vibrant pink hair a stark contrast to the tense atmosphere. She adjusted her glasses, a wry smile playing on her lips.

Lance stepped forward, his brow furrowed in confusion. "Malva? What's a member of the Kalos Elite Four doing here?"

Malva's smile widened. "Oh, I'm wearing my reporter hat today, darling. I wanted to interview our young friend Lucas here." She winked at Lucas, who felt a twinge of unease. "But it seems I've stumbled into something far more intriguing."

"This isn't a game," Lance said, his voice stern. "We're facing a serious threat."

"Oh, I'm well aware," Malva replied, her tone suddenly serious. "And I'm offering my assistance. My Pokemon and I are at your disposal."

Lucas studied Malva carefully. Something about her sudden appearance set him on edge, but they needed all the help they could get.

"We appreciate the offer," Lucas said cautiously. "But are you sure? This isn't your region, after all."

Malva's eyes glinted behind her glasses. "My dear boy, a threat to one region is a threat to all. Besides, I can't very well report on this story if the city gets overrun by mutant Rattata, can I?"

Lance and Lucas exchanged a look. Finally, Lance nodded. "Alright, Malva. We'll take all the help we can get. But remember, our priority is protecting the city and its people."

"Of course, of course," Malva said, waving her hand dismissively. "Now, where do you need me?"

After the group dispersed, Lucas pulled Mayor Cassidy aside. "What about the local church? Have they said anything about the situation?"

Cassidy's face darkened, her brow furrowing. "That's... complicated. We tried to contact them, but the church has gone silent. No one's answering our calls, and the building's been locked up tight."

"That's odd. Have you tried forcing entry?"

"We considered it," Cassidy replied. "But with everything else going on, we decided it wasn't a priority."

"I understand," Lucas said. "Let's focus on the immediate threat. We can deal with the church situation after we've handled the Rattata horde."

Cassidy nodded. "Agreed. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to oversee the evacuation plans."

Lucas and Sabrina moved through the city with an urgent purpose, rallying every skilled trainer they could find. Within an hour, a formidable force had assembled on the fields outside Viridian City.

Dozens of trainers, police officers, and Rangers stood in tense formation, their Pokemon at the ready. The air thrummed with nervous energy as minutes stretched into hours.

A rustle rippled through the underbrush. The assembled trainers collectively held their breath. Then, with a bone-chilling squeal, the first wave of mutated Rattata burst from the treeline.

"Bloody hell," someone whispered.

Lance's voice rang out, clear and commanding. "Hold the line! Don't let them reach the city!"

As one, the defenders readied their Pokemon. The air crackled with released energy as the battle for Viridian City began in earnest.

So, what do you think? What’s going to happen with the horde of Rattata? And what is everyone’s reaction going to be when they hear about the church?

Thanks for reading.
