Dear Evan Hansen Preview

Definitely my last detour before completing the Evermore vid

Dear Evan Hansen Preview

Comments

WAIT YEAH WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT

Allison L Pope

Hooray, a video on one of the few major entertainment-related things to share my name! (This and Evan Peters)

Evan Magnusson

I thought Evan didn't know Connor, so he didn't have any memories to share.

Steve Ray

I have an anxiety disorder and I kind of get what (I think) they were going for with some of Evan’s characterization. There are several long stretches of time in this movie where the audio gets muted as Evan gets anxious and we’re treated to just the most unbearable overlay of Ben Platt’s ragged breathing and it felt both very unintentionally funny and very uncomfortable to experience in a theater with strangers. Several people got up to leave during the showing I saw, usually at the beginning of a musical number, which just made it painfully obvious to me that they had been suffering through the endless swaths of awkward near-silence to sneak out under the cover of sound.

Kyle Franklin

I swear, once Broadway actors learn en masse to tone it down in front of the camera, it'll be a wrap. Unfortunately, as a recovering Theater Kid (tm) I know deep in my bones that this will never happen lmao

Corynn

Hoo boy... I made it 20 minutes in before I had to give up on Diana. And the cool quick change during the wedding was the only reason I made it THAT far, tbh...

Corynn

https://bestmovies12345.to/movie/dear-evan-hansen-72205 (update, I found it)

Evan Bobrow

Yeah except that was cool

Jack

"you will learn next to nothing about his actual life or personality" This is what's most upsetting to me. I'm reluctant to criticize the musical & film plots too strongly, having only read synopses of each, but the most glaring issues has always seemed to be Evan erasing the memory of the real Connor. It reminded me of the concept of a "final death" that appeared in the movie Coco, where your spirit dies in the afterlife once there's no one alive to remember you. I feel the story should've involved Evan being haunted by the fading memory of the real Connor, as he gradually replaces it with the fake Connor. Instead we see Evan singing & dancing with the fake Connor. I guess it's no big deal in the end, since he Learned a Valuable Lesson™

Richard Reeves

I've never seen DEH but it feels like it gives off the same levels of tact that the princess diana musical does

Aaron Fontes

I guess there must be some parallells between DEH and 13 Reasons with in their odd portrayals of mental illness?

Mathias Rav

I wish I could be more lighthearted about it, but DEH actually pisses me off with how arrogantly it presumes to portray mental illness. Like, here’s a teen who died of suicide, but you will learn next to nothing about his actual life or personality. We will not discuss suicide except in passing as a plot device, and we will later actually show two other teens attempt suicide. Also, there will be no comeuppance for someone who manipulated and took advantage of a family’s grief, and there will be no actual growth from said character. Here’s a “teen” who supposedly has severe anxiety and depression but behaves inconsistently and instead comes off as a sociopathic monster. Because portraying the mentally ill as inherently dangerous and selfish is so novel in media. Also, while we’re at it, let’s make all our marketing revolve around a song and stupid hashtag that implies someone being there for you and having friends and support will magically fix your mental illness and suicide ideation. Like, yeah, those things can help, but you know what actually has a chance of helping someone with mental illness? Therapy, something never actually seen on screen, and an actual action plan for coping and treatment. Also, an action plan for when a person is in crisis to help them hopefully not actually die by suicide. The whole thing reeks of monetized Oscar-bait capitalizing on the recent popular trend of the surface level de-stigmatization of mental health.

Amanda Kay

Evan "singing passionately" has big Kylo Ren screaming "MORE" energy

Parahelix

the thing that’s so crazy though is that ben hasn’t played evan on broadway in almost five years! the belief that ben has that he can’t be divorced from the role makes no sense, especially since his OWN BOYFRIEND(!!?????!!!) played evan on broadway after him (noah galvin)

erin 🤸‍♂️

the thing with the plot of dear evan hansen is that it solely relies on you offering grace to evan for his youth, but you can’t really do that when he looks like he’s wearing a commedia dell'arte mask that has been surgically attached to his face

erin 🤸‍♂️

you're really serving Vanessa Bayer as Jacob the Bar Mitzvah Boy in this wig

QuailMan420

I really hate the whole hand thing! I usually fold my arms across my chest because I don't know what to do with my hands but being 6'2" people have told me I look really menacing sometimes when I do that. Just can't win :/

Luis

As if you can take a credit course in it

AHHHscreamapillar

Oof! Now I gotta wait to find out why the scary man is singing! ><

Gillder

We've been working on that since before MST3k.

Stephen Gillie

You read my mind abt the Josh Groban comment abt Ben Platt in this - his performance in this film gives me Josh Groban guest-starring on Glee

Clark Mitchell

we need to abolish the bad musical to worse movie industrial complex!

Will Vence Jr

Whenever Kaitlyn Dever's face was on screen I was trying to place where I've seen it before and for some reason could only think of a fancast I saw for The Last of Us in which she'd be Ellie

Jaz Mei Luo

This is already so hilarious I can’t wait for the full video!

Az G

I had no idea what he looked like in real life because I am not that familiar with DEH and omg WUT. No one can convince me those aren't two different people!

Cynethryth

I've heard that this is common with Broadway actors going to Hollywood. They've been trained to yell and gesture so people in the back of a theater can hear and see, but on film this looks like the flailing you describe. Also, I think with that wig you could convincingly play Beaver Cleaver when he was 12.

David Whitney

Oh my god, the hand gestures while singing. Burst into laughter when you were mimicking the gestures. So perfect.

Melissa Deni

I can already tell I’m going to watch this full video about 89 times

Jamie Miller

What an amazing spot to end on lol

Caden Meyer

Definitely one of the most underrated characters in the Jenny Nicholson cinematic universe.

SweetAlissum

This is how the movie Clifford handled it, starring 40-something Martin Short as a ten year old boy.

Adam Ryan

I think this is my favorite wig/costume so far lmao

bingo bango

All the SNL references in this comments section are spot-on. I'm personally getting Fred Armisen impersonating Kyle Mooney vibes?

Emi Cohen

every single line in this video was gold. my god. the Colm Wilkinson-to-Ben Platt smash cut??? Jenny Nicholson, you absolute legend

Emi Cohen

I've decided to wear the shirt on Halloween and dress as Jenny Nicholson dressed as Evan Hansen

Luis

this is a worthwhile detour

George Fletcher

You know what might have been a good solution, having the story told in flashback. Just give us current-age Ben Platt being like "let me tell you a story about my life!" as a framing device, that would let you get away with more magical realism and help people write off Dear Evan looking way older than everyone else. It'd be like what they did in Transparent.

Shiny Skunk

Loved the Video already. Also appreachiated the very small apperance of the Musical „Elisabeth“ (where the actor playes a Teenager as well as a woman in her fifties). I love this Musical

Elisabeth Thinkjump

I think they're the square ricola ones, my favorite!

Aurora

He looked so familiar and I couldn't place why for the longest time. Seth Meyers. He looks like Seth Meyers doing an SNL skit.

Rebekah Wright

Are there any leads on somewhere to watch this movie online, legally or otherwise, I simply refuse to go to a theater to see this but I am so intrigued

Evan Bobrow

If they had just cast other mid-20s actors who looked mid-20s it would have been no big deal to be like "sure, these are all high schoolers" but Ben just stands out so much that it looks worse in comparison. I just rewatched Scream since it's spooky season and was mildly distracted by how old the male "teen" cast looked. They were all 26 and LOOKING 26, with the main female cast being 23 and looking more youthful, but at least with that movie it was multiple characters looking too old for high school instead of just one, and of course with Scream the plot isn't really about *being* in high school, so it's easier not to think about or notice their ages

Melissa

There's a small scene in the beginning of the movie that really solidifies all the problems with Evan's personality. He tries to print something off but there's a line of people waiting at the printer. He tries to reach pass them and announces "I printed something." The girl in front of him says "yeah, we all did. That's why there's a line." Evan looks completely forlorn like she said she fucked his mom.

Pazuzu

You describe Connor as a bully but I don't think that tracks in the movie. He just seems like a mentally unwell, very paranoid boy who tries to befriend Evan right before his death

Pazuzu

The cut from the normal characters acting to Ben platt... Acting... Literally made me lol If I were drinking water I would have done a comedy spittake

Foxxy Cleopatra

"I don't know enough about Ben Platt's face..." This utterance is so inexplicably hilarious to me.

Bryan Sutton

I like that you spend so much time analyzing Ben Platt's performance. None of the reviews or commentary I've seen have broken down what makes the movie version of Evan so uncanny. I knew there was more to it than, "he looks old", but couldn't articulate what else was wrong.

Richard Reeves

It looks like they cast Paul Simon as Evan Hanson

MarOnMars

I enjoyed this a lot. Thanks for bringing some cheerful negativity to my day.

Haldon Lindstrom

I really hope you mention the strange marketing where everyone collectively realized DAE wasn't about a closeted gay teen

jan Simon

I do kind of wish they'd cast an unknown as Evan, but I can't blame Ben for wanting to keep being Evan for a little while longer. It just seems like Stephen Chbosky could and should have pulled him back a bit, or had everyone else be much more theatrical. Or they could have let it just stay as a stage musical. Overall, I'm conflicted, because I loved the soundtrack, and the show in general was really important to me in college. PS: Just gonna reiterate that idk wtf Pasek and Paul have been on for the past few years, but their score for Dogfight remains their best work imo

Gian Balangue

I cannot wait to see the rest of this video, so glad you decided to make it :D

marioabbs

I like that we're treating the title as his full, proper name. Mr. Dear Evan Hansen. Weird to me that everyone who's thrown out a defense of this is, like, "WELL WHAT ABOUT GREASE?" Like... Grease was made in the '70s and, while beloved, has long been an infamous example of what happened here, but 1) at least the whole cast was aged up, not just one key character and 2) Grease takes almost nothing about itself seriously compared to the fairly somber subject matter here. So... yeah. What about Grease, exactly?

Michael Harle

This is the hardest I've laughed at a video in a long time, and it's just a preview! Looking forward to the full video, and also can't wait for the Evermore documentary!

Kim Stroberg

The "this wouldn't exist if daddy didn't pay for it" energy of this movie musical is just... exhausting. I feel like we all could have guessed it even if the dude didn't admit it.

James Rule

Oh god I own that same polo D:

Luis

I had heard so many stories about this weird Broadway guy who insisted on playing a role he was too old for in a nepotism-fueled vanity project film adaptation. I know almost nothing about Broadway so filed it away... Imagine my surprise when it ended up being BENJI from Pitch Perfect.

AK Barratt

“…warbling out high notes like an anxious Jiminy Cricket” oh my gosh that whole sentence -I’m dying.

Julie Pastel

It's not Ben Platt's fault that he's such a BIG MAN

J White

Is. Is that a cauldron of cough drops?

Olivia Louise

This is fantastic so far!! Especially your point about uplifting newer talent - Andrew Barth Feldman played the part on Broadway and is an *actual* teenager, Ben’s partner Noah who did it on Broadway would be more believable!! ALSO the movie lost the second it out Ben and Kaitlyn together because she looks so young she makes people look older by comparison!!

J M

Video already slaps so hard, Jenny. I actually went to see the film in preparation for the video and it was such a train wreck that I had to move away from other people in the theater because I couldn’t stop laughing/covering my face. Can’t wait to see the rest of this because dear lord this is an iconically horrible film.

Ramona Mantegani

COLM WILKINSON 😂

Marissa Collins

This is my Joker

Elaine Waite

I couldn't help but sympathize with Ben Platt roosting on this role like an overprotective hen, so I tried really hard to take the movie seriously, but that just makes it even worse. It's like a 2-hour SNL skit.

plz put this name after 'plz put this name last thx jenny' thx jenny

Remind me never to get roasted by Jenny because holy shit xD. And I think she's even trying to be nice.

Trystan

A Ben Platt performance could never survive the Red Light Green Light round

Jenny Nicholson

I'm so glad you brought up the inconsistencies in the social anxiety part! Yeah, I really don't understand why Evan is bothering to write his letters in a public place like the school's library especially considering he has a social anxiety disorder instead of his own room or just lock himself in the school's bathroom and use his phone instead. It really feels like Ben Platt and the crew just went to a subreddit instead of actually doing proper research and meeting people with social anxiety disorder. Like Ben Platt really is just doing an overkill and his gestures are not even consistent. You look at things like Eighth Grade and Mr. Robot which were made by people who are actually diagnosed with anxiety disorders (Bo Burnham and Sam Esmail) and that dedicated a huge amount of time and effort for research. It's a little hard for me to explain this properly but to me the difference is just night and day: they don't blame bad things that the characters are doing on their mental health, the actors' movements are a lot more nuanced and consisted, the social anxiety is used for stronger themes and overall they just do a better job of communicating the struggles that come with social anxiety. Like for example in Mr. Robot- Rami Malek is always making Elliot shaky but not too much, his speaking is slow under stress and it only has a fast and normal pace when he's talking to the audience, and there's also the use of the eye contact, the use of social anxiety for more sophisticated and the constant thinking about what's he's saying to other people. And honestly the same with Elsie Fisher in Eighth Grade. And in both cases, they really do show the toll it has on them in Mr. Robot and Eighth Grade. Like Dear Evan Hansen does have the little nuggets of stuff like I guess not being able to order delivery on phone because of the fear of talking to strangers, SOME of Evan's gestures are fine and The Anonymous song is doing an OK job of explaining to NTs mental health masking but then you have stuff like Evan doing that Naruto run and talking to a person about too much sweating which as a socially anxious person it's not something you tell and if you do tell it by pressure than you think later about how you should never have said that- but that's just my perspective as a ND with anxiety and social awkwardness. Like now I'm thinking whether what I typed was good or just really dumb and condescending. This movie really does feel like an Oscar-bait crash grab that exploits ND teens with this stuff. But I do know what can save Ben Platt's career: in the inevitable American movie remake of Squid Game, Ben Platt should take the role of No. 001, the oldest player in those games. Edit: also sorry about reposting this comment, but I accidentally pressed enter while still typing and I didn't want things I said here to go out of context. Hope what I typed here was clear and not stupid or gibberish.

Yoav Fine

Platt's character and performance are tailor-made for Fred Armisen to spoof mercilessly, if he hasn't already.

Ham

Yeah and crash dieting can sometimes result in a puffy face which could explain why he looks so uncanny and unlike himself in the film. Idk why he ever thought losing weight would make him look younger when it's usually the opposite

Jenny Nicholson

Maybe I’m being unfair but it almost seems like he lost weight for this role because he thought that’d make him look younger (weedy nerd vibes) but instead he looks kinda gaunt and exhausted. EDIT: ok I looked it up and he flat-out admitted in his ‘defence’ against the age critique that he lost 15 pounds to look younger! What a bad idea!!!

George Dodd

Damn, if this is his dad's vanity project, is the school the stable? But then I imagine the girl should be the dangerous horse which of course doesn't work

who is counting

I saw someone point out that Platt's excessive and over the top gesturing could be read as a really unflattering caricature of someone neurodivergent or on the spectrum and now I just can't unsee it...

Mel Curtis

Oooh I've been looking forward to this since rewatching the musicals ramble. And a salute to Jenny's curly Evan wig lol!

Rushka Unverricht

This is the most acceptable video detour I've ever seen, I'm very hype

Theresa

Oh dear…. Evan Hansen…

Vincent Gosh Dang Wren

Is this your Evan Hansen cosplay outfit or your self-insert Walt Disney train fanfic character from your Star Wars land video cosplay?

Caleb

I was about to go to bed when this dropped and hoo golly am I glad I didn't, this was pure gold. I was grinning the whole time. Can't wait for the full version. And I will be unable to watch the movie without thinking "Get it together, Evan, you're 45."

Dan Gibbins

Aaaa can't wait for this!!

Mariayuri Kumagae

Loved hearing the story get dragged in the ramble, looking forward to hearing it get dragged even more on the main channel.

Shaun Cheah

Sometimes, living on the other side of the world has its advantages.

Mimosa

I'm ready to cringe!

AHHHscreamapillar

I knew there was a reason why I woke up at 4 AM this morning.
