Ep. 284 - Let Me Be Frank, with Simone de Rochefort

What starts as a lively episode with Polygon editor and podcaster Simone de Rochefort becomes something far more interesting when one panelist’s audio goes missing. Hosted by Alex Jaffe, with Frank Cifaldi, Tim Rogers, Brandon Sheffield, and Simone de Rochefort. Edited by Esper Quinn, original music by Kurt Feldman.

Questions this week:

  1. From Frank Cifaldi: What is the Criterion Channel of video games?
  2. Sega just bought Rovio. Why?
  3. Simone, please convince the panel board games are good.
  4. What’s the deal with those TikTok videos that all have Minecraft or Subway Surfer footage playing at the bottom?
  5. Improv Zone - Video Game Pawn Shop
  6. Zara asks: Have you ever recognized something deeply personal from your real life inside of a video game?
  7. From Ash Parrish: Who is the American Mario?

LIGHTNING ROUND: VIOLENCE ISLAND

Recommendations:

Brandon: Echo Image, Spirit Posession, make more things like game stores and video stores so people can be paid to get baseline experience in a field they care about

Simone: Murder, She Wrote

Tim: Decision to Leave (2022), The Little Drummer Girl, Interview with the Vampire

that's nice to hear!

I listened to this twice and will come back to it. This is probably what got me to (belatedly) sign up to the Patreon to be honest.

One for the history books. I appreciate the amount of time and effort. Although many wish for this to be a one time thing, I would suggest thusly: Should by the grace of the gaming gods, you record an episode some day and lose only Tim's audio, that Frank then narrate. Not any time soon for your sake, but I think it'd be fun. Tails Satan!

This was a wonderful episode, thank you doing it this way instead of any other.

tbh I would have been satisfied if you'd dropped a vocaloid in and said tonight the role of Frank was going to be played by K.K. Slider, but I'm glad you put in the effort.

Noah Mittman

I can empathize with that. It’s how I feel about the company as a whole.

(brandon:) I got into it in greater detail on the forums - I don't dislike the criterion channel, I just find it positions itself as an authority in a way I don't like. the content of tubi is well described here: https://www.theonion.com/tubi-ceo-combs-through-goodwill-used-dvds-looking-for-m-1850262553

Brandon, for what it’s worth I have a lot of problems with the Criterion Collection itself but the streaming service has done a pretty good job in recent years of licensing more esoteric stuff from companies that specialize in genre/‘trash’ cinema. I have never looked at Tubi though so idk how it compares.

Between this episode, the noise album reimagining, and the amazing general discussions and coverage of the past months you have all been on fire! The collective effort to make this episode happen is just outstanding, and just goes to show how flexible and creative the team can be to turn a potential lemon of a situation into lemonade. Simone was a joy to have join the episode, and totally agree about the board game points. Having that one person to push everyone past the intro stage can definitely make the difference on whether or not you have a good time.

(brandon:) I have a suspicion everyone who is saying this saw you said that people would say this :3

I predicted people would say this as soon as Tim pitched the remedial concept.

Alex Jaffe

Can’t imagine how time consuming this was to do, but excellent work! Happy to see Simone here as well, love her work at Polygon 🔥

I love that you did this and hope it stands alone forever. This may be my favorite episode.

When you tweeted that you lost a panelist’s audio this is exactly what I was hoping you would do to solve the problem. Very excited to listen. 🙏🏻

Spirit Possession owns 🔥 anything on Profound Lore owns but that band has been ripping. Check out the new Impetuous Ritual tracks too off of PL bandcamp page! Fast and furious!!
