I wouldn’t really know either what gets broadcast in India or South Asia in general. I have spent my life watching 20th (and 21st) century American and British comedy but I never really noticed a grunting trope.

Hey, Anandashankar, I don't know how much 20th-Century American/British comedy and/or children's telly gets broadcast in India, or South Asia in general, but back in the day, it was common for characters in media to indicate great physical effort by grunting. It's so universal, in fact, that I only noticed that such grunts *were* a performance trope after you asked where they came from.

Ah, OK - no, it's not an inside joke so much as an "outside joke," to coin a phrase. It's something Jenny does sometimes to be funny, and it's a really good example of just the natural talent Jenny has for comedy, because there's nothing which is intrinsically particularly funny about it, and it doesn't reference anything, but it's the way it's done which makes it funny for some reason. If she does the best animatronics list (it's in the lead right now), I wonder if she'll mention the many, many amazing animatronics from The American Adventure at Epcot. I had no idea they existed until I saw the show, and I wish I had sat closer to the stage!! But I must say, the choreography and stage direction is pretty incredible!! Definitely worth seeing if you're a fan of animatronics.
