I gotta say, I am really torn on this one! On the one hand, I loved the way it explored the concept of 'what if normal people were subjected to an universe where the rules of narrative are not only acknowledged, but bureaucratically categorized and enforced?' Seeing that happen through Henchman 1 was hilarious, and trying to figure out the Monarch's plot- and how it all relied upon exploring that same bureaucracy, y'know, like an ARCH VILLAIN WOULD DO- was honestly genius. And, again, speaking as a fellow writer, this episode handles TV structure masterfully. You've got the A plot (JJ), the B plot (Monarch), the C plot (Henchmen), a D runner (the pirate), and it all works like clockwork. Each piece is set up and knocked down perfectly. I just added the Venture Bros book to my Amazon wishlist, cuz I gotta find out HOW their writing process goes. It is honestly awe inspiring (and hilarious). But the side I didn't like keeps shining through. The main thing with it is JJ... I just don't care for him as much as I care for the other characters. 'Now Museum' went quite a long way to show that JJ is more than just the perfect brother to elicit Rusty's anger, but that wasn't enough to make me care about his own particular reactions to the world he was now a part of (even though the OSI henchmen were great). And I have to say, it feels kinda weird for a show to be like 'the r-word is a no-no word' when it has a character like Ned, which seems to have been developed by people who thought the exact opposite. I guess, in a way, I have to respect the chutzpah of the writers to at least keep him around and try to acknowledge it. P.S.: I'm watching these on Hulu, and can I just say I am done with the Pacifico beer ads asking me why I don't get on a bike and drive up to a beach or wherever the fuck they shot it? It's because I don't have time, goddamnit! Also, Jack in the Box, ugh.

Think I like this one more then Matt and Steve. I love the Captain in this episode. Not quite “like gettin’ sucked off by an angel”, but it’s still an enjoyable episode for me.

I always remember this as being one of my favorite eps, but on re-watching I realize that I love what it says about the Ventureverse than the actual episode. The idea of a shadowy organization forcibly imposing narrative structures and tropes on the world to provide stability fucking rules, especially when viewed through the eyes of JJ who doesn't have the necessary emotional investment that people raised in the world do. But the actual execution is just pretty good, nothing special with hindsight.

oh god yes, remember in Alien Resurrection when they had swim under wreckage for like 5 minutes? fuck that, just let the aliens rip my face off, thanks.
