Mega64 Record Club Ep. 68 - Kiss - Alive!(#305)

Since Rocco has seen Kiss live before, it was imperative that he joined me this week to discuss Kiss Alive! the 3rd album by Kiss. Is this the best live album ever? Can you even call this a live album? Should Rocco be buried in a Kiss coffin? Tell us what you think.

Last year, my punk band decided to do KISS for a halloween cover set and I must say that actually playing the songs will make you respect them as musicians so much. The original four members were all great musicians and they wrote really fun songs. We went to see them on one of the final stops on the End of the Road tour and as performers and entertainers, I think they're really inspiring.

Next up: Rush? (Oh wait rolling stone probably forsook them)

Kiss is simultaneously the best and worst band ever. Definitely agree with Rocco that there's a vibe of "This is SO stupid and lame" when listening to them, but you've gotta admire Kiss' commitment to being Kiss. Those first six or so albums are still pretty great rock records, and then everything goes south around 1978 (with rare flashes of good). I also paid $40 to see them on the End of Road tour when they came through Australia last year. For some bizarre reason, Weezer was the opening act.

Oh, and serious missed opportunity if you never have Rocco play both Gene and Paul in a video at some point, spot-on impressions.

Don't hate 'em but not my thing at all, still made for a fun episode

I like that Rocco asked our thoughts on that Gene Simmons quote about merchandising, because I once had a college professor ask our thoughts about that exact same quote. Personally I think he's right about that general idea, whether or not if you approve of the lengths KISS have gone in their time. If you're a band and you're selling t-shirts, you are in the business of selling merchandise. That remains true even if you designed and produced the merchandise entirely on your own. In the class, I was actually kind of surprised how many people felt the other way. The general consensus from those against the quote was that, *KISS* is only in it to make money whereas *other artists* do it strictly for the love. Personally I'm not sure if the intention behind something is enough to change that, at the end of the day, both parties are selling and licensing merchandise. Interested to hear how people feel on the subject though. and just for the record...... KISS sucks

I'm with Rocco in getting that historical side of popular culture through full albums and catalogue listening. Kero Kero Bonito whips ass. The more I learned about Kiss, the less I liked the music.

When it comes to Gene Simmons talking about merchandising I feel similarilly to how I feel about eating meat: its a normal thing in our society, its a result of the conditions we all live in and we might as well enjoy it , but that doesn’t mean you have to be an asshole about it/disrespect the animals you’re eating/act like its not a big deal that something is dying for you etc. I feel like Gene Simmons can cross the fine line into explotation with some of his stuff (the money bag thing is just gross imo) and doesn’t really feel like he respects the people paying his bills, but maybe its just the sort of asshole tone he takes when he talks. On Every Breath You Take: I though I didn’t like the Police growing up because of this song. It’s kind of boring and doesn’t really have the insane percussion work and inticrate song writing of their good songs, but I think it is kind of hilarious that it’s the most radio played song of all time and is essentially a parody song.

Listening to this Kiss live album this week was pretty rough but this episode was the light at the end of the tunnel. Really good episode, really liked hearing Rocco’s experience from seeing them live. But yeah man KISS just doesn’t do it for me. Also it’s funny that a lot of this was recorded or overdubbed in the studio because I noticed the canned cheering when I was listening through it lol. 1.5/5 for me

Rocco, you need to listen to Denki Groove, theyre on apple music, you will like them

Kiss kind of reminds me of all the fictional bubblegum bands in the 60s and 70s - not musically, of course, but in the merchandising and strong branding. I 100% believe that if they could and made money from it, they would have put records on cereal boxes like the Archies and Banana Splits did. I find it funny that Alive was essentially the same concept as The Who live album from a while back but this was way more ‘fun’ to listen to. I just get a kick out of their banter and chatter, I guess. Because I’m a TMBG simp, I gotta mention the “song” P.S.O.K. It’s basically just clipping a bunch of Paul Stanley’s goofy catchphrases over a fuzzy bass but I think it’s entertaining. To Rocco’s point of the rabbit holes and deep dives on artists, I love to do that. I picked up the habit when I started working from home and listened to so many bands and artists I hadn’t taken the time for yet. Big recommend!! In fact, I worked through Rage Against the Machine’s discography earlier this year so next week is pretty exciting :)

Every time I listen to a Kiss song I always ask myself why don’t I listen to them more. I really love Hotter Than Hell and it’s always the one I recommend to first time Kiss listeners. Lot of good ones on it! Goin’ Blind and Strange Ways are so 🤌🏻

So many fantastic submissions, all worthy of winning

Shouts out to all the soldiers who submitted music to the ending theme contest this week. I really believe Mega64 has the most creative fanbase of all time.
