Mega64 Record Club Ep. 65 - The Who - The Who Sell Out(#316)

Let's all sell out this week and make sure we all are wearing the correct deodorant and eat the correct brand of baked beans while we talk about The Who's third album "The Who Sell Out." Come on in!

Comments

With Record Club as my only exposure, I can't say I'm big on The Who. The theming was cool, and I have heard plenty of albums likely inspired by it, but that's about it.

Oh 3/5 for me

It’s funny, I’ve really been into The Who recently but this album was just decent. Miles and miles is great and the radio stuff is funny but there’s some really stinkers like Silas Stingy. This is a great Who live performance I’ve been obsessed with recently: https://youtu.be/RJv2-_--EY4?si=lhVSHSHmrcPmMsx6

I 100% agree with you on Silas Stingy lmao that song is so shit

Hi Shawn! You may have already found this out elsewhere, but "tea" in the UK often refers to 'dinner', so them saying "what's for tea, love?" is like someone asking their spouse "what's for dinner?"; which lends a little more reasoning to being an ad for Heinz Baked Beans. My father lives in Australia where they have similar colloquialisms as the British and being asked 'what would you like for tea?' confused the hell out of me my first time

This Who album was much more my speed than the live one. Armenia, Mary Anne, and I Can See for Miles were the stand-outs for me! Usually I’m not a fan of interludes and skits included as tags on songs but these were short enough it didn’t bug me for the most part. Apparently at the time, I Can See for Miles was considered ‘one of the hardest rock songs’ and that is so funny to think about. It’s definitely not ‘soft’ but it would never rank high on the hardness scale by today’s standards. Leader of the Pack is not my favorite song by any means but I can understand the placement on the list, 100%. It’s quoted all the time (New Rose by the Damned, in Little Shop of Horrors and Rocky Horror to name a few examples), has a handful of semi-notable parodies (Leader of the Laundromat is my personal pick lol) and is overall one of the most notable ‘teen tragedy’ songs. Excited for next week! It looks like the easiest way to listen will be on YouTube which stinks for adding picks to my running playlist but whatever.

Oh my GOD Silas Stingy was fucking awful

316!? OH HELL YEAH 🍻💀🐍 This peaks hard for me after the Baked Beans commercial. Liked the first two tracks, could do without the rest. Pretty sure Silas Stingy is the worst song we've listened to in all of Record Club. I *really* like the idea of this album but I can't say it's that fun to listen to... idk, 1.5/5? maybe?
