Exclusive Video: Wins and Losses with the New Lathe

Friends:

Ahead of our upcoming video on my Spring Pole Lathe I have a little video review on how the thing actually works. We will cover the build in detail, but I wanted to give everyone some crucial early insights. There are a couple of mistakes that will REALLY screw up your lathe, and I made a few of those mistakes. I hope to save you the trouble and point you in the right direction with this build.

Also, I will be on vacation from today until the 17th. I won't have internet for most of this time, so I won't be available for messages or comments. This is a fairly urgent mental health break and I explain it in the video.

The video says I'll be back in October, which is a sign of how tired I am. We'll be back in SEPTEMBER. We're just taking the rest of August off.

See you in 2 weeks.

Dr RAUL ZAVALETA

As others said, please, take all the mental (and spiritual and emotional, etc) health time you need!

Bibliotheca

Please relax, burnout is not much fun, so take all the time you need Rex!

Peter Mealey

Sounds like a great vacation. Enjoy!!

Barry Minner

You're very welcome!

Rex Krueger

Yeah, I left that stuff at home, but you're very funny!

Rex Krueger

I found the woods most restorative. Thank you1

Rex Krueger

Thank you! It means a lot. I feel like folks on this community are closer to actual freinds.

Rex Krueger

I appreciate that more than I can say!

Rex Krueger

You're very kind. Thank you!

Rex Krueger

It was lovely. Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Ah! A fellow teacher! I taught University English for 11 years before I did this for a living. I could never do elementary school. I'm not that tough.

Rex Krueger

It's all coming up soon. I'm doing the voice-over for the lathe build later today.

Rex Krueger

I'm back....everything's still here. The place didn't burn down without me. Guess I'm not the center of the universe.

Rex Krueger

My mom is walking around using a cane! It nothing short of a miracle.

Rex Krueger

It was lovely. Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Must be lens-distortion. The screw came out quite straight. No perfect, but close.

Rex Krueger

You're very kind. Thank you!

Rex Krueger

It was a fantastic break. I do feel a lot better.

Rex Krueger

It might not be easy, but it sure is cheap. If you wanted to try, there's not much to lose.

Rex Krueger

No, I mean there was no internet at all. It was bliss.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

John, I'm glad you're okay! Thanks for the words of wisdom. I hear you loud and clear.

Rex Krueger

It's a real learning experience! Worth the effort.

Rex Krueger

Super intrigued by the spring pole lathe. Have a good vacation Rex, thanks for all you do!

Adam Hinkel

Wiishing you and yours well. Don't forget your Bodgers bench and pole lathe lots of green wood where you are gonig.

Mark Evans

While you may be having trouble with your inner critic, we outer critics insist that you take time for yourself. Time in the woods will definitely help recharge your batteries. Go, enjoy and we will be here when you return.

Matt Evans-Koch

Yay for the lathe. Health first, always. All the best, your parasocial friends.

Helge

Rex, being a patron is like buying you a coffee. I'd do it if you were off for a month!

Joseph Vaughan

Another great video, looking forward to the build video. In the meantime enjoy your well earned break

Shane Thomas

It's not a vacation when you have cell and internet service. Enjoy your time.

Michael Bennett

New guy here. Love your chanel, and I'm so excited that I became a patron. Enjoy your time off - we all need it sometimes. I'll be relaxing with 26 second graders all day every day....

Bruce McDonald

Thank you, Rex. Enjoy your much needed vacation. Looking forward to seeing the build video and your new Compass Rose Tools.

Jennessa Lynam

enjoy your vacation everything will still be here when you get back.

Daniel Doggett

Family and self care are always a priority! One reason I’ve stayed with you even as I’ve shifted to more power tools for my own health reasons- you know what is important! I hope you’re mom is doing well and go have fun in the woods! Be well!

JJ Hoffman

Mental health is as important as physical health! Enjoy your downtime!

Bill Hedge

Is the HF c-clamp screw level or is that just a trick of the camera? Have a good vacation.

Stuart

Good for you recognizing that you need some time off. Have fun and see you when you get back.

doug reid

Enjoy your time off - Get rested, there's plenty of your content I haven't seen yet. The mental break is probably most important.

mtnman

Enjoy your time off and am looking forward to more on your spring pole lathe. Never thought I would turn but now you have me thinking…

Gerald Eddy

Good choice on the cabin. Wired Internet is some much more reliable in remote locations.

Richard C von Brecht

Have a very relaxing vacation. You deserve it!!!

John Hiemstra

Rex, I'm a lot older than you, but I still feel like I can just grind through projects...this is a mistaken and potentially dangerous belief. I did just that earlier this month, a home construction project in 100 degree heat before gathering some friends in a cabin for daily fishing floats on a big river...starting tired and getting more tired every day. On the fifth day I made a simple error of judgement that could have had fatal consequences. Fortunately, and with the sterling assistance of the local Search and Rescue deputies, we all came through it, and the worst consequences were lost equipment and a couple of weeks labor I will have to invest to fix the drift boat. Get your rest and rejuvenation, take care of yourself and your family, we will be happy when you get back!

John Griswold

Enjoy the break. I have a nice lathe, but I would really like to build the springpole - just for the fun. Maybe I could donate it afterwards...

Rick Prosser

Enjoy your time off!

Paul Brown

I love your design on thought processes on how you build projects. Thanks for sharing. Also, enjoy your break. I completely understand your burnout. I go through it with my job all the time. Luckily I know when my busy times are and I usually am able to schedule down time when I need it. Enjoy your rest, and I look forward to your return.

Brendan Langord

I have some C-Clamps that will find a new life on a bandsaw jig. Thanks for the example. Enjoy your vacation.

Craig Thibodeaux

Try and rest. Don't take your work with you no matter how tempting.

Sean McGown

Be safe and rest up

mshafer1

Have a good vacation! We will be here and we can (will) wait for what you have in store next!

Bradley Barth

Thank you for the words of encouragement at the end. Society at large (particularly in the US) needs to elevate the value of taking time for mental health (myself included). Enjoy your vacation, sounds like it will be great!. The lathe is looking amazing! I will definitely be building mine closely following your plans when they release. I do want to have elements that make it a proper “bowl lathe” as well. That may involve making a different set of poppets altogether. We’ll see. As always, amazing work, and thank you Rex!

Aaron Wasielewski

Enjoy your vacation. Just like unpaid bills, we'll be here when you get back. Recognizing that I zero experience with a springpole lathe, here is some unsolicited input. I strikes me that the tool rest is too slender for its length, leading to unwanted deflection. Greater top to bottom thickness would stiffen it up. Mind you I'm speaking from the perspective of someone with experience only on a modern motorized lathe, and the speeds and forces on a springpole lathe may make this a non-issue.

Brian Taylor

Enjoy your vacation. We will be here when you come back

Marc Barash

What is this "break" thing you speak of ??? With my regular job it's impossible to get more than a day off at a time, even my "vacation" time gets cut short usually because I'm needed... annnnnnnnnnd then there's the horses lol. The horses don't give breaks so when do need a bit of "me" time I go out and brush my big "Rex Size" horse... you would love him, he's a draft horse and topped out at 1 ton last year, he's taller than our truck and I have to use the tailgate to get up on him lol. Rest well my friend and see you in October !!!!
