SPOILERS! If you haven’t read Chapter 13 yet, you should do so before reading further.
Diane wasn’t sure how much influence she had over the decision (seeing as she was still an inanimate amulet dangling from Reiko’s neck), but her owner accepted Queen Ysabeau’s quest to recover her mortal remains. The quest begins in the sewers beneath Lyonne, where the spectral Queen’s skull awaits. At least the ninja decided to summon her familiar back in the flesh to help fight the denizens of the sewer; Diane could not complain about that.
Unfortunately, Diane, now flesh and blood and full size again, acquired a passenger inside her own head. Somehow, Ysabeau inserted a portion of her own consciousness into Diane’s mind – a fact which the dead Queen compelled Diane to keep secret from Reiko. Ysabeau insisted that she merely wanted to observe and track the progress of the quest, but Diane’s instincts told her that the erstwhile Queen of Valois was a devious individual and not to be trusted!
As Reiko and Diane explored the sewers, seeking the “boss” monster that allegedly had Ysabeau’s skull, they stumbled upon evidence suggesting the nature of said creature; petrified women, clearly victims of a gorgon. A formidable foe! Reiko devised a plan to deal with the boss; she provided Diane with a blindfold and instructed her to create a diversion so that she would have time to get into position to kill the gorgon with her bow.
Diane was understandably skeptical of the plan. Would that scrap of cloth really protect her from the gorgon’s petrifying power? She was a trial lawyer, not a monster hunter! Perhaps there was a better plan than simply walking into the gorgon’s lair as bait…
What should Diane do?
