Fifty years ago today, human beings set foot upon the Moon for the first time, as half a billion people back on Earth watched on TV.

A lot of future-looking folks thought there would be people living in colonies on the Moon by now. Yet it has been forty-seven years since the last Apollo mission put astronauts on the Moon's surface.

Will we ever go back? The current presidential administration has given NASA a deadline of 2024 to put people on the Moon again. Given NASA's recent track record with respect to human space flight, maybe they should just hire Elon Musk to get the job done...
