For keep it on the hob: Instead of completely random ingredients, you could do "random pre-set ingredients" For example you get a Random protein, random vegetable, random carb. per meal. That way, it is still a meal that can be enjoyed, but mixes in more surprise elements or moves away from just a set of instructions. Or let the boiks "lock in" certain ingredients or select them before-hand as an acceptable starting point. Or maybe earn tools/ingredients throughout the day.
