2023-11-17 03:37:58 +0000 UTCIn severe cases of chronic C. dif infections, fecal transplants can be considered as an option for treatment. The C. dif has so thoroughly colonized the microbiome of the intestines that the only way to supplant it is to get a large enough colony of healthy bacteria (poop) in there to compete with them. Now fecal transplant can be accomplished by several means, either via direct transplantation in a procedure OR via dehydrated poop pills. The pills do have a capsule so you're not explicitly making tongue contact with shit, but you are in a way eating shit. I had a patient who initially refused the latter, presumably because the idea of eating someone's shit disgusted them. Eventually the C. dif diarrhea overwhelmed their own disgust, and they agreed to eat the poop pills.
