Alexxa Reacts to Star Trek: The Next Generation | S1:E1 - Encounter At Farpoint - Parts 1 & 2 | The Adventure Has Begun! | Full, Watch-Along Reaction

Hi fam!

We are finally starting Star Trek: The Next Generation! Today's episode is the pilot titled Encounter At Farpoint - Parts 1 & 2. What an amazing first episode. As someone who's watched the Picard series, it's amazing to see these characters when they were practically babies! I can't wait to dive more into this show. Oh and I got emotional a few times, most notably when ADMIRAL BONES showed up on the screen! I can't wait for the next episode!

I hope you enjoy my reaction to this one!

Xoxo,

Alexxa

A great reaction to a great series :D Admittedly, Farpoint is probably not the greatest of stories (it's essentially Roddenberry doing his usual 'life - but not as we know it' idea), but it serves the function of the episode, which is to introduce us to another collection of potentially iconic characters. He was up against a considerable scepticism from the established TOS fan base, and for a while things looked a little shaky - but he soon won them all over. One of the great strengths of TNG was Roddenberry's determination to have an 'ensemble' show, where every principle character (and there were many) had their own time in the limelight - unlike TOS where characters such as Sulu and Uhura tended to be stuck with one or two lines per episode...if they were lucky! In TNG, everyone get's their own story - and you'll get to develop a fondness for all the them. (A friend of mine at Media College was once asked to write an essay on his favourite TV soap, and why he watched it. He replied that he didn't watch soaps, but he did watch TNG. Did that count? His teacher said "Absolutely!" I hope that comes across as the compliment it was intended to be!) Trivia for this Pilot episode: DeForest Kelly refused any sort of financial incentive in order to make his small appearance. Despite having to spend hours in make-up, he insisted on being paid only the standard salary for one day of work. The reason? He just wanted to work for his friend Gene Roddenberry one more time.

Yeah, The Naked Now, Where No-One Has Gone Before, Datalore and The Neutral Zone are some of my favourite episodes in all of Trek

Alright! TNG! Welcome to the 24th Century. You might get some folks saying, "You should skip seasons 1 and 2 of TNG"; I'm not one of those people. There are great gems, even this early on. I'm glad you've gone back to the beginning of TNG; you won't regret it. Yeah, I get misty-eyed too every time I see a certain cantankerous Doctor in this one. "You treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home." Engage.
