‘unconsciously’ seeking abusers? | bogus therapy

Dear patrons,

I'm delighted to say I've finally completed one of two projects I had to abandon last year because of my back injury. This piece uses some real-life case studies of individuals who were told the reason they kept finding themselves in abusive relationships was because they were unconsciously seeking people like their past abusers. I regard this as a form of therapy-based gaslighting — and wanted to illustrate some cases that flew in its face.

Regarding my back, I can now shuffle about and stand up for periods of time — though sitting still sets off acute nerve pain and may not be viable for some time. So I've got myself a stand-up desk. And a few days ago I descended and climbed the stairs down to the garden for the first time in months. I'd had to navigate the stairs a couple of times in January to go to the doctors and hospital and it had been torture — back then, any significant redistribution of weight  produced catastrophic pain. But this time was clear. It was wonderful to see the crocuses scattered across the grass.

Wishing you all peace and safety.

Welcome back!

Thanks Dr Christopher. I liked your use of the phrase 'fragmented memories' — I think it's better to use that neutral term in cases of trauma. To speak of memory disruption is certainly consistent with some individuals’ experience of trauma — and fully consistent with research on disruption of information processing in emotionally volatile situations. But ‘repression’ goes a step further, making it an extremely dubious proposition — and in the classic technical sense given by some of its initial proponents, an unfalsifiable one. The idea that a separate second mind called the unconscious selects certain experiences to ‘repress’ in order to 'protect' the individual might appeal to our imaginations. But decades after its proposition, the evidence its proponents expected to be uncovered some day has yet to materialise. Instead the field of 'repressed memory' work has given rise to all the kinds of errors and abuses we find with so many other pseudoscientific concepts. I'll be looking into it in a video I'm planning for the coming months where I’ll be having a deep dive into Freud. All the best.

Could I get you to clarify your position on trauma and what might be thought of as repressed or fragmented memories, where it could be said one is not fully conscious of abusive events because of the nature of the abuse or the time period in which the abuse took place (e.g., childhood)? There is scientific research that demonstrates the brain is materially altered by traumatic events, which can lead to, for example, the loss of memory of specific details experienced in a violent event. I understand that the focus of your video, here, is that it is unscientific to refer to 'unconscious desire' in a therapeutic context, but it might be helpful to differentiate between this and 'unconscious' memories, if indeed you think these can be separated.

Really good. I like the point that neither the therapist nor the client have access to the so-called unconscious,

Can't wait to watch it! I haven't been able to yet but I'm so excited for it. I'm glad to see you are making progress with your health to the point you finished one of your projects. I'm wishing for more healing for you.

Very good video indeed. Glad you're healing up!

"Thankfully, much of the Therapy-World has distanced itself from these outdated practices." Not in Germany... There's even a new fashion creeping in, already favoured and advertised by some Professors: That if it wasn't life threatening, it isn't PTSD, but you're just embittered. That would include rape, child-rape, moral injuries and so forth. not just severe psychological abuse. If you want to take a dark dive, check out the baffling bogus papers by Michael Linden, who invented and promotes this idea of "PTED". When a highly decorated Catholic cites a lot of Socialist works to further substantiate his claims, there's two ideologies that overlap in some very gruesome areas. I grew up in East Germany, and looking what our orphanage system did even until recent years is nightmarish. Sexually exploitative content regarding prepubescent boys and covering for very grabby teachers was common-place, even until the 2000s. I'd honestly be surprised if that ever changed. The politicians, whether in education or elsewhere, are still all the same as before the fall of the wall. But I digress...

Glad to see you are on the mend. Take care of yourself, you are valuable.

Glad you are doing better!

So glad to see you back at it, and glad to hear you're on the mend, no matter how slow. I hope you're being gentle with yourself, and I hope that you will continue to improve! Thankyou for pushing through despite everything you have going on.
