For anyone interested in 'self-improvement' high control groups — touched on briefly in the video — a series called 'The Vow' takes an in depth look at the NXIVM control group. Great piece of film work — and heartening to see the self-styled guru successfully caught and convicted, having fled to Mexico to escape authorities when the story gained traction in the press. Many parallels with Scientology — including the use of crippling litigation against former members who speak out and the use of compromising material to gain compliance. Like Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, NXIVM's Keith Raniere was elevated to idol status as the most intelligent ethical man in existence. 'The Vow' is grim viewing in many places — one of the distinctive abuses perpetrated by this group involved the branding of flesh. But it's an inspiring account of how a handful of determined former members fought to expose a powerful organisation.
