KDM White Box Review: Indomitable Survivor Morg

Note: I have a video review of this box on the YouTube Channel (see this collection here); you can disregard my concerns about the content being digital only there because it now has a physical release. Unless we have a situation where that changes and the KDS starts getting digital only game content, I am no longer concerned about that situation.

Morg awoke alone, a high-pitched whine drowned out his thoughts, his muscles spasmed and cramped in waves, leaving him breathless. His memory of the hunt was a riot of incomprehensible images. He noticed the monster lay unmoving, cleaved by Morg's mighty killing blow. A golden, cloudy substance spilled from the monster's wounds, steaming and jiggling gently despite the stillness. An image of the ultimate axe emerged with sudden clarity in his mind. He shifted his bloodied body, scooping the blubberous mass into his arms.

Morg is the second Indomitable Survivor released for the Gorm alongside Grimmory and Morg (an anagram of Morg) brings us another weapon. For those who are not familiar with how the Indomitable system works, when you defeat a monster with Indomitable (Level 3+) then in addition to the normal rewards you will also gain 1 Indomitable Resource from the resource deck. The fewer unique resources in the deck, the more likely it is that you'll get a specific resource.
These resources also come with a Pattern card, a card that has the crafting recipe for a specific gear card. Pattern gear is usually limited to a specific number that can be crafted; normally that is one, but in the case of paired weapons it will be two.
One of the key parts of the current Gorm experience is the question of if you own Grimmory as well as Morg. If you have both of them, then the odds of getting the Greatest Gaxe are halved, and the odds of getting both Gusk knives also drops (meaning you'll have to hunt more L3 Gorms if you want paired Gusk knives). This is not something one can do much about; but it is worth noting that if you already have Grimmory, Morg may make getting both Gusk Knives more difficult and Lantern Year consuming.
The Miniature

Morg is a glorious Himbo in a way that we don't get in sufficient quantities and I am absolutely here for this big, dumb, handsome idiot and his sculpt (plus I have always liked the Gorment Armor pin up survivor and I'm glad we now have a male version). This miniature now takes the top spot from Hungry Basalt as the best Gorment Armored miniature we have. Not only does Morg come with three different weapon options for the magnetisation enthusiast; but if you look at the back of the miniature he has his Gorment Mask, Wisdom Potion, Acid Tooth Dagger and a Pulse Lantern hanging from his belt. It's rare that I show the back of these miniatures in these reviews, but Morg's belt items are things that you need to behold.

In addition we also get this small severed baby Gorm face to adorn the base with; I do wish that this box came with a fully sculpted base or a stone face base, but that is the sole complaint I have about this glorious sculpt. It is a magnificent model, full of character and style while also returning a bit of balance to the game's miniatures by providing more male eye candy.
The Game Content

Crafting Cost: 1x Breathtaking Blubber, 1x Black Lichen, 3x Dense Bone
The crafting cost of this weapon is very reasonable; you'll certainly have both the blubber and lichen available immediately, and the dense bones are something that you can either save up in advance or even generate via the first of the Gormcymist Innovation line cards (Nigredo, which turns 3x bone into a dense bone on an endeavor with an 80% chance).
The weapon itself is an excellent axe for the place in which you'll unlock it; giving us an upgraded version of the Greater Gaxe by scaling up its speed and Barbed in addition to giving the weapon Savage (one of the rare moments where Deadly is actually paired with Savage) and a Pattern ability that increases its Perfect hit range by 1.
With just the pattern ability active, the odds of rolling at least one Perfect hit at speed 3 which will have the Greatest Gaxe (GGGaxe) be at 15+ strength is 48.8%; and if you have [FA]Timeless Eye or [K]Dark Eye II that increases the range to 8, 9 or 10 which is a 65.7% chance of at least one perfect hit (Just don't expect three perfect hits too often and celebrate like heck when it does happen). That's a pretty reliable weapon, and you can also pair it with Phoenix/Dragon/Cycloid Scale armor if you want additional strength in case you miss the Perfect hits. In fact due to Reach 2 the Greatest Gaxe has a lot of extra synergy with Phoenix and Dragon Armor set bonuses.
In short, this is an excellent weapon for an already excellent Node 1 Level 3 showdown fight; we already had good reasons to hunt the Ancient Gorms (L3) because of the Regeneration Suit, but now we also have the Gusk Knives and this absolute Chad of a weapon providing additional sweetening of the pot.
Summary
Morg is without a doubt a slam dunk Indomitable Survivor box. The Indomitable Pattern system continues to grow and gets better with each release, as long as we do not hit and oversaturated situation where we have 10+ indomitable resources per monster I cannot see that changing as long as the gear cards that come with each resource can justify their existence.
As such I can recommend purchasing this indomitable survivor and it joins the ranks of the good Indomitable white box releases alongside Lenore, Grimmory, Lordsruin and Xell. I can also rank all the White Box releases to date in a future article if there is enough interest for that to be updated. Let me know in the comments if you want that.
Final note/wish: I hope to see an Indomitable Gorm based bow in the future; Gorment Armor is already one of the “bow” armor sets I use, I'd love that synergy to be directly expanded upon and those big long tusks on the Ancient Gorm are just asking for it

Yes, please, that would be helpful :)

2024-07-19 23:30:25 +0000 UTCI will second that thought! There is so much content. It’s almost a full time job to try to paint, play AND keep track of releases and how to incorporate them into the game. I would really appreciate a visual guide of sorts that lays out all of the current campaigns and expansions, including Gambler’s Chest, that shows how to incorporate them into the game in a step by step manner. In other words, what is the logical way to progress through the entire game in a way that makes sense? For me, I only have so much time, and I’d rather have more play time than planning time.
