POLL: Three Airplane Mysteries
Added 2024-12-18 20:00:07 +0000 UTCHi, Task Force! Ever since we covered EAL Flight 980, the team here at HQ has been curious about more airplane mysteries! We had a few we were looking at and thought why not have YOU choose which one we cover?
Here’s a brief rundown of the 3 we chose:
The Star Dust Accident
On August 1, 1947 an Avro Lancastrian airliner, a small plane which carried up to 13 people, crashed into the Andes.
The plane was named Star Dust
What was strange about this crash was the final transmission as the plane approached Santiago, Chile.
The radio operator did not understand the final word they said, so the Star Dust crew responded with STENDEC in morse code TWICE.
No one knows for sure what STENDEC means.
TWA Flight 800
This 1996 crash is the third deadliest in US history.
The plane exploded just 12 minutes after takeoff from JFK Airport in New York.
This explosion caused the crash, but the NTSB could not identify the source of its ignition.
Some witnessed on the ground claimed to have seen a “streak of light” before the explosion, leading to many conspiracy theories.
The plane wreckage was reconstructed to attempt to find the cause of the explosion.
EAL Flight 401
Another EAL case! This plane crashed into the the Florida Everglades on its way to Miami in 1972.
The cause of the accident is known, however, strange rumors spread after.
Apparently EAL reused some of the parts from this plane on other planes, where it is said passengers and crew members alike have seen ghosts.
In particular, ghosts of the pilots from EAL 401.
Eventually one of these plane pieces ended up at the Ed & Lorraine Warren Museum, and supposedly a Ouija board was used on the plane to contact the dead.
So, what do you think? Which case would you like to hear us discuss?
