Announcement/Extended Progress Update (16 January 2025)
Added 2025-01-16 15:20:27 +0000 UTC
Hi Returning Visitors!
I hope you're doing well. π
Due to the sudden closure of a file hosting system, there will be a change in how I host our TFS: Book Two alpha! Recently, I was made aware of an issue on iOS devices by one patron in regards to how saves were storing, so I (and a few epic others) were already working/testing out a solution. However, this closure adds a new dimension of change! That being said, you have my word that I'll be working ceaselessly to get our alpha back up and running so you'll be able to experience Fernweh as you all deserve! π²
A solution is being worked on for hosting the files that ensures playability and security!
In the meantime, for iOS users, I would suggest using an alternative (such as your computer), if possible, or simply wait. Android and PC users are fine with using our current set up and current links; however, it all has to be reworked by the end of the month due to this closure. It might be best to wait overall depending on how you feel about restarting/remaking your MC.
I can hear the very distant wails of agony, especially since I encouraged seasoned patrons to make saves to enjoy this month's hefty (and emotional) drop. π I understand! Time permitting, I intend to work on an internal feature that might make your lost saves not sting quite as much. However, everyone will have to restart because the other system is going to be taken down.
TL;DR: Due to a file hosting system's sudden closure, our alpha will need to be reworked.
You may still play on your distributed link; however, there is an issue with iOS/Apple saves not persisting once you close out your window. Saves work fine on other operating systems/devices. It might be best to wait until the end of the month to explore Fernweh once things are settled. Please know I'm hard at work trying to come up with a few solutions to ease any strain on you. I'm grateful for your patience/understanding. π
It's my hope/intention to have everything up and running by month end, if not before!

I actually need to hop on some coding, so I'm going to share a teaser from Book Two and keep this relatively short and sweet this time around. As for what I've been doing, it has mainly been continuing to learn/improve the website, writing content for us to enjoy, and then working on a new feature for our Book Two alpha that you'll now likely see sooner than later.
(It's a lot of additional/careful coding, so wish me luck.)
One other thing, our JR writing is now a S POV because I'll be shifting theirs to February to make it longer and give it a Valentine's theme. This POV will be getting into S's trauma about witnessing the house fire and shedding light on how young J and R were coping with your absence. (Also, there is a lot of banter I enjoyed writing because R and the MC are peak rivals in this being playful.) It's going to tie in perfectly with things you can discover in Book Two!
I'll make our excerpt a bit longer. What if there's no Book Three because your Returning Visitor accidentally offs themself and their ROs? π This is a fun choice option with gremlin energy. Edit: This^ was a joke about your MC choosing to jump on J while near an edge. The lack of self preservation in favor of teasing our Detective. There is no bad ending here, lol.
[Spoilers Ahead!]
Here's an excerpt from Book Two:
James and Reese
"Want to creep up on him?"
Reese casts a long glance between where you're both standing and James, gauging the distance. "You wish to do that to someone who is often on edge while he is literally standing on one? I think not." He rolls his eyes when you simply grin back. "You will be on your own for this jest, [Surname]."
"You startled Rosie earlier."
"Not truly, and I adapted to her environment."
Apparently, Reese has boundaries; however, you're inclined to view them as bland rules that ruin what could loosen James up. You creep behind him at a steady pace. Your hands seem to rise of their own accord, bent at the wrist with claw-like fingers that project a mischievous, gremlin energy. It's for fun! You're about to latch onto his shoulders when he's slowly turning around to check on you, forcing your little scare to speed up toβ
"Detective!"
Reese's call to him is both a signal and a betrayal that ends in an unexpected collision.
You pounce; James pivots around.
Now, you're in his arms with your hands on his shoulders after he reflexively jolted from your sudden appearance. The edge is lined with warning pavers before dropping off into water, but his work boot goes over that so he staggers slightly to regain his footing. Wait, now he's in a precarious position, which kills your humor when you grip on more tightly until Reese intervenes. He fists your outfit like it's a harness, hauling you backwards along with James, before securing a hold on your arm.
The three of you are back on safe ground.
James and Ruby
"Want to creep up on him?"
Ruby casts a long glance between where you're both standing and James, gauging the distance. "You wish to do that to someone who is often on edge while he is literally standing on one? I think not." She rolls her eyes when you simply grin back. "You will be on your own for this jest, [Surname]."

Yay, the trio made it (β¦for now)! π I wonder how your beloveds react to this little stunt though.

I'm glad the alpha migration went well, that was a crazy two weeks for a lot of IF authors. And I know that Josh wouldn't goof off like this (more Jam territory, to give her bestie a little scare), but it was fun to read!

2025-02-04 18:43:16 +0000 UTCAh the βjoysβ of being an Apple user lol Sorry you are having to deal with that atop other things. Hopefully, itβs not something that causes too much trouble for you. But in happier news, Iβm so excited for that POV!

2025-01-17 13:13:13 +0000 UTCBad end has so many connotations and even without taking it as a joke, I'm still excited. One of my characters I can see this having them teeter on the edge of a cliff and the other is usually happy go lucky but after everything their disposition and complete personality to be happy all the time starts waning on them and just how much of a toll this is taking on them begins to show in cracks. To see the struggle from an MC and some of the consequences they have to face. I'm here for it.

2025-01-17 09:31:31 +0000 UTCI know Iβm not typically patient & this is very likely some sort of curse for putting my whining wants to words. I have never held my iPad in such distaste as I do now. And that evil Siri knows i donβt have another device to use besides an iPhone. Itβs some kind of fucked up tech dystopian Grimm future poison Apple or whatever. It wasnβt really an issue when the alpha was shorter but i have narcolepsy & lately Iβve been going full River Phoenix / My Own Private Idaho / itβs been bad. So I know I wonβt make it without saves. But I can wait. This will be some Yoda level mindfulness. Yup. Thank you for all your hard work on this, both the iOS issue & the migration!

2025-01-17 08:43:44 +0000 UTCOoh, I'm now more excited for you to read this POV. It'll ache so good. ππ₯²(Especially since you'll get insight into both J and R.)

2025-01-17 02:15:56 +0000 UTCI can't wait for the S POV, I need more angst about how poorly everyone was coping with the MC's sudden departure. π«

2025-01-17 01:48:14 +0000 UTC(In my head, I always call you 'Thorn' (respectfully) when I see you in my notifications! π₯°) Thank you for your kind words about the situation! I'm similar to you these days with how I code/write/test on the PC. It's easier for me with my reading/windows also my eyes after being at the screen for a time. I'm fortunate that you all are being patient and that I have some readers helping me test and figure out a solution. You'll be back in Fernweh hopefully sooner than later without any hitches or glitches. :D I'm glad you're intrigued. I feel R's part might take a swipe at your emotions alongside J's. It being centered (grounded!) in S's POV will give unique insight into the other two that I think besties and beloveds alike will enjoy. I'm loving hearing more about your MC Micheal. π I support his encouragement of some chastisement from his beloveds. It would come from a place of care, but you'll later realize how far the fall would be. I'll be excited to see which choice option Micheal gravitates to; there are many. Hope you're doing well too! π

2025-01-16 23:31:30 +0000 UTCWell Iβm glad I am mostly a PC user. Sorry to hear this has caused some issues, I hope it doesnβt stress you out. I am very interested to see how S,J and R carried on with life after the MC left town π§. As for the trailer for book two, dear god no my JR MC would not endanger James like that! Micheal would almost demand that both ruby and James get really angry at him for being dangerously stupid. Anyway stay cool π.

2025-01-16 21:07:55 +0000 UTCYeah, it's something to do with Apple's Webkit--how it handles local storage for saves. For our TFS: Book Two alpha hosted though my website, it has only been an issue just recently this month. As far as I know, it worked okay before, so you were going above and beyond to work around it!π₯° I feel you though; I used to play on my tablet years ago and my DD saves would sometimes vanish. Apple can be finicky. The good news is: We will hopefully have a solution for our alpha by the end of this month! Thank you for what you suggested too. πI appreciate your patience and excitement to read more. I'm grouping my replies because I just saw yours about JR's snippet. I agree that R gently scolding the MC would be valid in this case. We might get some firmer/steely J depending on what's gone down, but you're perceptive that R was scared in that moment--MC and J close to teetering. π The mild drama.
Aelsa Trevelyan
2025-01-16 18:59:41 +0000 UTCAs for JR snippet π Iβm not saying I want R to scold MC, but a little teensy tiny scold wouldnβt hurt, ya know for almost endangering both MC and Jβs life. You just know that R was terrified just the teensy amount β€οΈπ

2025-01-16 18:53:53 +0000 UTCI never knew the iOS thing was a bug ππ I been restarting the game from creator creation every time for the monthly update and just never close outta safari till I was finished playing through the routes and hope that it doesnβt background refresh π no worries because it meant I got to precariously go through all the chapters to make dude I donβt miss anything π Sad about Dashingdon, I know some people use itch.io but they mainly write with sugarcube/Twine

2025-01-16 18:50:45 +0000 UTCThank you, Alex! π₯° I'm also so glad you're excited for the S POV and more young Fernweh gang insights. (We'll have a peek at how devastated R was, ahem.) The MC in this choice option was certainly a bit of a gremlin; we can hope! :D
Aelsa Trevelyan
2025-01-16 18:45:25 +0000 UTCThank you! π I agree with you.
Aelsa Trevelyan
2025-01-16 18:41:40 +0000 UTCI clarified the post, no need to fret, Chani. πYour choices can have /reasonable/ consequences as the stakes increase across books, but I was joking about this particular choice option. It isn't a 'bad end', just the MC taking teasing a touch too far while near an edge. So, hopefully that 'eww' is an 'aww' now.
Aelsa Trevelyan
2025-01-16 18:41:17 +0000 UTCI'm so glad you're excited! π₯° There are a few worse outcomes and heart wrenching choice combinations as the consequences stack up across books; however, I edited my post. What I said about this particular choice option was more so a joke, not a bad end. :D There can be consequences. πππ²
Aelsa Trevelyan
2025-01-16 18:37:57 +0000 UTCI edited the post for clarification about my joke for this choice option! :D

2025-01-16 18:36:27 +0000 UTCBad end??? Eww. I guess I'll be code diving and reading to the end before playing, lol.

2025-01-16 18:32:38 +0000 UTCI'm ready for a bad end, not going to lie. I'd be interested how Book 3 would deal with it. I can imagine some ways it could but I can't wait to see what you do with it. So excited!

2025-01-16 15:57:22 +0000 UTCWait, bad ends are a possibility? That intrigues me--and makes sense.

2025-01-16 15:38:52 +0000 UTCEnd of an era with dashingdon closing down....I get it, but it seems like it's been here forever. Good luck with the migration!
