Playing Adventure Sonic Wrong

Ah yeah! This is happening! This is my era of Sonic! The 3D platformers I adore the most for all their janky glory, lets talk about them and how they've been treated over the years!

Playing Adventure Sonic Wrong

Fantastic video! I had to sit on it for a bit before coming up with either a suggestion for the Boost video or questions for the afterthoughts video. I hope I'm not too late with the questions! I wanted to come up with an idea for Lost World in particular. It's a game I don't like very much, but nonetheless find quite fascinating as a sort of pseudo-sequel to Sonic Colors. The obvious thing to talk about (in my mind) is the "Mario-ness", as nebulous a concept as that is. This is probably not a great suggestion, but my harder idea would be to play Sonic Lost World at the same time, with the same controller, as one of the New Super Mario Bros games; having a direct comparison on-screen might help highlight key talking points in the discussion. My easier idea would be to replace the soundtrack with one of the Mario soundtracks and see how long it takes people to notice, like the randomizer bit from ADV-2. (I quite liked Lost World's soundtrack.) (QUESTION 1): To what degree do you think Sonic Heroes would be improved by cutting down on the amount of stages that each campaign has? Do you think it would significantly reduce the tedium imposed by the game's structure, or would it create too many new problems? (QUESTION 2): To what degree do you think "not having to restart the entire story every time" would improve the experience of playing Shadow the Hedgehog? (QUESTION 3): Do you have a preference for what a singleplayer game denotes as "main stuff" and what it denotes as "optional stuff"? If so, how much does this preference shift according to genre or scope?

Great video. Going to ask for the afterthoughts, any reason you didn't touch on Sonic Advance trilogy or Sonic Battle? Advance 1 is a special favorite of mine and battle is an actually really good and underrated story imo.

Holy shit this was such a wild and wonderful breadth of topics I didn't expect out of playing Sonic wrong lol. That bit about cheats and San Andreas hit me because thats how me and my brother would always play, flying cars and cars blowing up on hit, city in chaos with arguments over cheat weapon set two or three.

What an amazing video. I'm glad you're able to put it into words that I can't since I absolutely have a chuuni adoration for this era of sonic games too. I haven't touched Frontiers since I figured it was more corporate-sanitized sonic, but I'll give it an honest go now

Here's a suggestion, though I don't know anything about this era so whether it's doable is unsure: Give one person the controls, and another the ability to see the screen - a kind of Keep Talking scenario. I'm thinking that while this could be funny (and very unfair), it might also be a good era and method to springboard into talking about level design in speed-focused (or not) games. Reviewing how you begin to codify mundane obstacles or ad-lib through unique ones could be a great window into how a level looks to someone who's only hearing of it boiled down to its dubiously-quanitifed essentials, and from there maybe you'd start to see patterns and evolutions across them.
