Page From an Alchemist's Notebook

Here's a previously unpublished 20 page comic. An alchemist summons the gohma in the pursuit of insight.

I forget precisely when I started this comic, but it was around 2015, and you can see certain aspects of my style change as I moved away from using a brush pen, and also started using straighter lines for my panel borders. Differences in rendering too.

I have a number of unpublished comics, some of them nearly complete like this one, that I never all the way finished. The amount of time it would take to color these comics I think would be better spent at this point working on new material, so it's probably about time to start moving on and posting some of these. And especially since so many of my ideas have changed since I made them that a lot of them are kind of obsolete...

Just literally the best, I keep coming back to this! I feel so 'seen' by your aesthetic priorities and storytelling. Gorgeous. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Thank you!

Thanks! I'm still holding out hope for the inspiration to put that final bit into coloring them, but at the very least I might collect them into a pdf and sell them. In the meantime I think here is a fine place to start rolling them out.

Thanks Bao! I have a few that are half colored too that I might post "as is".

Thank you!

Thanks bmarch!

I never cease to be amazed at the intricacy and detail you work into every page! A fun idea, literally creating something via music.....when it works. ;) In alchemy, one must accept one's failures as well as one's successes with quiet grace and dignity..........SONNUVABITCHBASTARD I DO NOT WANT TO LIVE!!!!!!! ;) (Young Frankenstein reference)

Extraordinary imagery and storytelling. There is something remarkable about your world, it is so full of myth, wonder, knowledge and magic.. thank you for sharing this, it's amazing to what imagination can produce.

I love love love this. I especially love the imperfect robot, especially considering the negatives ai has been for artists the last few years. It makes for a interesting narrative in 2023 compared to 2015 I hope you post some of the old incomplete comics as your ideas and the way you communicate visually is always so delightful to look at. (Plus as a artist its nice to be reminded that even my favourite artists also drop personal projects midway through for one reason or another haha) But i get why you want to put more of your time into something new especially when you’ve improved and changed how you do significant things.

I love these complex environments. It's sad that they are not part of a complete project so more people can see them. I know it's not every artist's cup of tea, but I have seen others pull out full pages from old works, clean them up, and collate them into colouring books to at least get a little rent money out of the work even if it's never completed. Again, I know not everybody would want to use old projects like that, but I can certainly see people wanting to spend time lavishing all that detail with colour.

I love the interiors, so lush. Overflowing with details. I forgot there was a story and got lost in the environment.
