The Abroad in Japan STUDIO TOUR! | Patreon Exclusive Video

Well guys it took us 9 years to get here, but at long last we finally have a dedicated studio space!

It's absurdly exciting and honestly I can't believe, even though I've spent the last week setting it up and sticking furniture and cheese in it.

It's early days though and I'd say it's only 50% complete. It's still missing its soul!
Later this week we're having an entrance room built and walls put in.

Then next month an entire set is being built, where all future videos will be shot.

There'll be a video on the studio on Abroad in Japan later in September (or potentially October), so you've got a head start with this sneak peek!

I have to say a massive thank you to you all for believing in what we do and what we create on Abroad in Japan. It's been a long journey and there's still so many things to do! But without this community, we really wouldn't be here today and I can't wait to turn this studio into something special.

And of course, let me know what you guys want to see in the studio! Who, what, where, when, why, cheese.

All ideas are welcome! Write away below and I'll have a read through over tomorrow's coffee!
Chris

Ha, we’ve got that as our doorbell in England 😂.

Pete Donaldson!!!

tootles444

Don't take this the wrong way, but am I the only one who thinks that at the moment it still looks less like a Studio and more like a oversized student dorm, outfitted with a mix of old furniture "inherited" from the attics and basements of different relatives and other strange things you get “when moving out for the first time” including the obligatory kitchen full of empty booze bottles ?

Adams42

LOL, I recognize the cheese in the fridge. Here, it's sold as "cheerful cow" (most accurate translation I can think of) and it's actually pretty good. The gang sure missed out on this one. :D

I'm so proud of you! I hope this studio will allow your creativity to fly higher and higher still. Personally love the travel videos you do, but you already showed that you can dabble in many other areas just as successfully. Excited to see what the future brings! I'd like for your blade runner aestethic to make a return somewhere (I think you said it would?). Maybe a video version of the podcast with Pete too?

An Edo period model would be great, too!

Phoebe Dolim

WT, you are a natural interior designer & decoator. Can you decorate my home...? ;)

Phoebe Dolim

Does Japan have that many kinds of cheese (that would be interesting) ? Maybe we could ship some cheeses from our various countries to Chris?

Phoebe Dolim

You could put an etagere or cupboards over the toilet. You can store the TP, hand towels or cleaning supplies in it. Tripping over your TP and scattering it over a dirty floor is disappointing. Plus, it will make cleaning the floor quick and easy.

Phoebe Dolim

Seeing Chris getting a new studio feels like my kid just graduated, and the best thing is, I have no kids. Proud of what you achieved.

João Costa

Very well deserved. I remember back on the days when I wouldn't know if you stopped the channel or not with the large gaps between videos during the early stages. To think how far this channel has grown with your hard work and dedication, I would just like to say congratulations. Thank you for all the splendid content over the years and for the many more yet to come.

Wow amazing! Real slick! (You know, somehow I thought it was going to be Ken Watanabe standing there at 2:59).

taffer9

Looks awesome! Really inspiring!

Oh, and I just saw someone's suggestion to invite the trash taste bois to the studio, and I love this idea. Honestly, I'll pursue any excuse to put you four in a room together. Hilarity always ensues!

Argus9 (Jonathan)

Awesome studio Chris! A real signifier of how far the channel has come. I'll second your idea to use the space for more live streams. I think you have a lot of talent for that kind of medium, and there's so much that can be done with that space. Definitely a great way to pad the space between video releases somewhat, and it's fun to see you and the Aij crew and friends hang out.

Argus9 (Jonathan)

Time to pull the Uno reverse card and invite the bois

Looks great! Enormous, for Japan. I would love to see a sit down chat with your fellow YTubers and Natsuki. Casual style...hope you disposed of that cheese in the best way possible.

Looks amazing! Very slick. Congratulations! My partner and I loved your videos that were just you at home talking direct to camera about an aspect of living in Japan so excited to hear there may be more of these now you have the studio. Our other favourites are travel/culture videos with you and Ryotaro or you and Natsuki. Look forward to seeing how having the studio evolves the channel!

Congrats on achieving a new milestone on the channel. Looking forward to watching more video from the studio.

Congrats Chris! I'm excited for how you'll utilize this space in future videos!

Congrats, Chris!! The end of the video, though. A fitting sequel to Too Much Volcano

Chadin

Apologies, I'm being late! Congratulations on your achievement! A studio is definitely the most logical next step in your progression. For the studio you definitely need one or two mascots and a recreation of a showa era styled background. Some neon signs are also a must! I'm really looking forward to this!

Tinya Wollweber

How long till Chris lives there. Probably already essentially does.

Matt

Worth it. Every time!

Prince Wolf

Arcade machines!!! + Wouldn't this studio be a waste if you didn't take this opportunity to start a side hustle filming and directing AV movies?

I wanna SEE the podcast.

WT

make a new desk setup for where to edit videos in a more comfortable setting, maybe build a new computer! I’d love to see that! Home is for relaxing the studio will be for work

I support your channel for a lot of reasons Chris, but the main one has always been the passion you have for providing an authentic window into Japanese culture and history. I'd love to see you use the new studio to expand your content to include more Japanese historians/cultural guests. People who write interesting books on Japan, or provide authentic Japanese cultural experiences (maybe someone who teaches calligraphy, or a more in-depth discussion with a sake maker, or the monk from Yamabushido). If you could get one guest like this a month for an in-studio interview, that would be amazing. Think the Joe Rogan of Japanese culture podcast. Love your work Chris, keep it up!

Bradley

I really like the last one. Anpanman Decides the video :o

Matthew Davison

Congrats on the new studio! I'm sure there's a ton of ideas floating around, and some hilarious ones I saw above! A few that came to mind are: +Use one of your sets as a space to record the Abroad in Japan Podcast so you can post them on here or YouTube. +Bring in some guests to the podcast or special Patreon behind the scenes stuff for longer/special episodes or topics. Could even use those guest episodes of the podcast/Patreon to expand on video(s) you post with said guest. Example: video of you and Ryotaro comes out. Then Ryotaro comes on and you guys discuss things in more detail. +More drinking streams (mario kart or Japanese style drinking games) with Norm, Natsuki, Ryotaro, Ian, "The Boys", Sharla, Tokyo Creative, etc. would be pretty fun. The drinking streams around the holidays have been a blast. +Use that big table and space for more food and drink comparison videos! +Use anpanman to have subscribers help decide various places to explore in Sendai or nearby towns/cities.

Amazing studio dude, love it! Please bring the boys from trash Taste over for some party, that would be super fun

Luis Pais

Quick tip on that new wall you’re building- if you can, also install a red light on the hallway side that you can turn on whenever filming to indicate that people shouldn’t come into the studio until the light goes out. Might save you some interrupted shots. :)

Chantal Russell

Fabulous new studio! I'm looking forward to see you hanging out with all in the AIJCU, trash taste boys, sharla, natsuki etc, and chatting, playing games, live streams 😀

Caz T

The one single chair in front of the projector... reminds me of my first apartment.

Johannes

Hi Chris, thank you for giving a tour of your new studio space. I can't wait to see the studio when it's ready to go.

Japan isn’t big enough for that

WT

Those would have to be black tatami

WT

I’m late to the party again but some ideas/wanna sees - Guest signature area, not so much sheets of paper like trashtaste but more like the Hollywood green rooms around here, just an object to scrawl an autograph on. Giant rice paddle or Anpanman statue or something silly lol - get THE Anpanman back from Pete! I wanna see him on the bookcase or a table. - would love to see guests like Ian and other AIJ crew. Camera talk w Norm or something. Other guests I’d love: filmmakers you like, your friends as they are all so interesting, a Twitter employee explaining, in person, why the F you don’t have a blue check. - a retro looking hi-fi stereo system with loads of cassettes ( even if they are just for looks ) - a large map of Japan with all your guide map pins in it. Maybe in the entryway. - a big ass AIJ logo in the mid point of the floor maybe in center of a compass rose - your podcast neon sign image made into a legit (no noise) neon sign in the blade runner area / in a window. - a mural print of one of your amazing city night lights shots on one wall or as a pull down screen over the blinds on a large window - an old style vending machine right outside the kitchen, maybe fill with just coffee * that negative comments in the bathroom idea is pure gold! Please do that!!!!

WT

Amazing! Looking forward to the flood of videos coming from this place!

Vagabond Turtle

Congrats, Chris! The studio looks beautiful already. I can’t wait to see all complete it. I do think the studio needs a zen/meditation area with a few tatami mats, a buddha, and books on the subject. Also, please have Pete as your guest. He needs to test the capabilities of your new projector. 😀

Mercedes Mezzasalma

Congrats on the new studio Chris. Looking awesome. Can't wait to see what you can do with the new place.

Yesss I'm so excited for you and the team, Chris! The studio looks super nice and great for filming!

tori bees

Haha, don't tempt me

Abroad in Japan

I agree! haha

Abroad in Japan

The Ken Watanabe cutout is amazing! 😂 I can’t wait to see what you do with the green screen. So much potential. Loving those posters too… they look great framed!

Laura Beaumont

Get a hot tub and show up those trash taste boys

Thomas

It's huge! But sadly not Big enough for Connor s ego u.u

Wow, it's huge!

Mim Franklin

Oh yeah, I would love to see a print of that crazy awesome fan art of you by @chauncyfeliz, the one with you wearing LV shirt and the wind in your hair in the new studio.

Nicole Paler

Congratulations!!! ❤ while we really love your camera angles when you do the travel videos, we did miss snarky chris 🤪 so excited to see where the new digs takes you!

Nicole Paler

I'm so happy seeing this! It feels like I've gotten a studio myself :D But yes I second Liz's idea, a model train set would be fantastic. My first thought was the original Dr Jelly's train, but any train set would be super cool to see.

Shesha

How about a scale model bullet train on a track, running through the cyberpunk set?

UwU

I'm so happy for you and I'm really excited to for the new content. I've always loved your travel videos and I am really surprised they didn't do so well. So many vids have such high production value 🤗 But I'll probably watch about anything from you 😄

You've got to try and get the real Ken Watanabe in for an interview!

Congrats on the new studio! I hope there will be a bit of room for more Resident Evil 2 on Twitch. That stream was hilarious.

Lady Long Limbs

"Wonderful! Time for a celebration...Cheese for everyone! Wait, scratch that. Cheese for no one."

April Norton

Woo! Congrats! Your hard work has paid off!

kate brascoupé

Fantastic! Definitely worth getting the Trash Taste guys over when it’s finished. No shame to be had in a tiny bit of gloating 🤣

David Clark

Looks great! Will be interesting to see what you come up with in the coming episodes!

LordChris

The place looks great, that couch looks so comfy! With the projector and gaming corner I can already see Abroad in Japan taking over Twitch. Now you could also have more guests on the podcast as well, maybe also film them, and CGI Pete into the video. Looking forward to the new set and all the great things you will be doing in the studio.

Eszter Nagy

I'd love to see a section of the wall dedicated to the thumbnails of your highest rated videos, and those closest to your cold dead heart. (Read: A joke, not an attack)

Francis M. Gallagher

Excellent news. Chuffed for you mate. Edit: idea for studio vids, whiteboard, mucho Strong Zero, and playing Pictionary with Brit/Aussie/Japanese contestants!

Etienne Sharp

Connor and you consuming 50 different Japanese cheeses while dressed in bladerunner cosplay in the new set

Matticus

These are friggen great ideas

Avram

you could fit an entire family mart inside the studio

rafa UGM

Once your internet service is up, I request Pete

It looks incredibly cozy and spacious, I'm jealous!

Busiris

So, exciting! I can't wait to see what you come up with Chris!

Char

Chris doing us dirty showing a high tech toilet that probably wipes and dries your bum: "Nothing special."

Looking forward to watching it ,is it 4k ?

Looks incredible! Ideas that come to mind, in no peticular order: *official Coffee corner in kitchen with all the coffee options you can dream of *wall of hats featuring your favorite poorly translated slang from Don Quijote *in entrance room, perhaps framed Abroad in Japan Merch? Good to impress businessmen if ever you plan to host some, but maybe a bit gaudy depending on what you're feeling for decor *wall of shame with framed printouts of all your favorite hate comments in the bathroom, where they belong *instead of green screen, what about painting whole corner of filming nook green for same effect? Might require some work to round corners where wall meets floor though... I see streamers do this on twitch. *anything to make editing in that space more enjoyable *maybe soundproofing corner for podcast sound quality? Well done, looking forward to some great content coming out soon! Hope editing gets that much more bearable separating work from home. -Cheers *Edit - Spelling

HighTide

Woohoo! go Chris!

Peter Varga

The new studio is looking great, congrats! It deserves a live podcast with Pete Donaldson... Or a duel between Dark Ryotaro and Pirate Natsuki! The prize for the winner would be cheese... Cheers!

Joao Pereira

Now is the time to get Ken Watanabe into this great studio! I'll leave it up to you to decide whether you want to make a movie there, have an interview with him, or just rolling around on the floor together.

Satomi Arihara

Excellent good 👍 luck 🍀

Travel videos are my favourite! Rest is fine too :P More space, more colabs? And if everything else fails, it probably sleeps quite a few people on AirBNB ;)

Piotr Gutaker

So happy for you Chris. Studio looks great already, can't wait to see what it will become. Sure would be interesting to see a certain Premier Gamer putting that projector to use.

Mr. Wolf

I feel like there's a ton of Tokyo creative colabs that you popped up in and are ripe for sequals so I guess that entire back log, plus Natsuki life lessons, longer form interviews with Japan creators, and those in Japan impacted by different issues or have a unique perspective, more stuff like you did in the tsunami video, monkey tennis, Pete Donaldson's head floating in to videos games master style to do reactions.... I'd say the list is endless but I've already run out of ideas

scott kennedy

like the doorbell , and the studio looks great, want to see Sharla, Natsuki , Ryotaro , Norm, and more cooking challenges

Yster

Place looks awesome! Can't wait to see what's in store in Abroad in Japan! Congrats!

Xanne

Looking forward to the performance-capture & CGI setups for the productions of "Dark Ryotaro in Space" and "Natsuki on the High Seas"!

Darren Hague

Awesome! Can’t wait to see the end result once it’s all together. Please keep Ken Watanabe for future videos!

Anna D

That space is huge, so happy for you man. Have you ever thought about featuring Paolo from Tokyo on your channel?

Chris! That's amazing! Glad you're making a HUGE upgrade to your content creation!

Arthur

Looks great so far. Thanks for posting the tour!

Michael Taylor

Are we crowd funding a next level Cyberpunk studio?!

Anthony

This is so exciting, really looking forward for what’s to come on the Abroad in Japan channel; the possibilities are endless!

DinoKōyō

That's amazing! Congrats to your team for all their hard work. Love your content and can't wait for more.

Jason Gonzalez

Looks awesome, Chris! So happy for you and how far you’ve came. Can’t wait to see what content you create in this studio 😁
