*NEW Exclusive Abroad in Japan Patreon Series* | Understanding the Japanese Mindset | Watch Now

Hey guys!
So today I come before you with two videos and some exciting news.

The first video is the Patreon vlog above where I examine my recently uncovered JET Application - which I wrote when applying to work in Japan all those years ago - with some surprising findings. I also discuss the upcoming trip to the Sapporo snow festival, where we'll be joined by Natsuki, Pete, Sharla and Chiaki (a really random all star cast).

And finally within that video I explain the new Patreon exclusive series of videos, which'll be released every month - the first of which you'll find below!

In a nutshell, about a year ago I worked with Tokyo Creative - the creative agency - to produce a series of videos for their new online learning platform TC Learn. The idea was for a subscription fee, viewers could watch 75+ videos from various creators teaching everything from how to start a Youtube channel, to getting a job in Japan, finding accommodation and learning the language.

They put a lot of time and effort into the videos to give them an impressive production quality and I dedicated a lot of time to scripting them and travelling to Tokyo to present and film them. By the end we had a great series, but then Tokyo Creative had some management changes and the company dropped the idea after a matter of months - which was deeply frustrating given the time and energy everyone had put into it.

I was pretty pissed until recently, when I was able to convince them to hand over all of my videos, which I plan to release to you here on Patreon each month throughout this year - alongside the usual vlogs.

Every month we'll hold a vote here on which episode you'd like to see next, as the topics are pretty diverse from teaching English and self motivation, to cultural concepts and building a Youtube channel.

And I thought I'd kick off the series with one of my favourite, "Understanding the Japanese Mindset | 3 Key Concepts Explained", where I discuss some awkward situations that arose early on when I moved to Japan and the Japanese way of thinking that underpinned them.

I hope you enjoy the series those folks - there's some fantastic stuff on the way!

Also this week we released an awesome Podcast episode, where Pete and I discussed our 12 favourite places in Japan outside of Tokyo and Kyoto - hidden spots off the beaten path.

We talked about why we like them and how to get there, so bee sure to listen in for travel ideas.

And finally, I was in Tokyo a couple of nights ago and randomly snapped a photo out of my hotel window that looked fairly unremarkable at first. But after playing around for 20 minutes on photoshop in bed, it ended up becoming one of the best photos I've ever taken. I couldn't believe it - check it out below!

- In case you're wondering, it was the Prince Hotel in Shinjuku.

But in the meantime guys, if you have any ideas on what you'd like us to do and film in Sapporo, let me know in the comments.

For now though enjoy the videos!
Chris

Glad everything worked out in Sapporo with actual snow on the ground :).

Chris, do be careful with that hot sauce. It's heat on another level than anything you've likely experienced. It will be entertaining to watch Pete and Natsuki die a bit, though ;)

That picture is so incredible! I saw it on Instagram and I couldn't stop staring at it. Amazing. Honestly I have no ideas as to what you could do in sapporo but I'm absolutely positive whatever you do would be entertaining to see. Even just you guys walking down the street 🤣 I can't wait to see Natsuki and Pete together again! Also food in videos is always a huge win in my book 😋😁

Pete and Natsuki in the same place? Are you sure Sapporo can handle that? Are you sure the internet can handle that? Also: any chance of a higher-res version of that photo at the end of the post? That'd be a fantastic desktop wallpaper!

Wow, cool! I'm going to Sapporo Snow Festival next weekend too! Looking forward to possibly running into you, Natsuki and all the folks there! :)

That TC Learn video was extremely interesting. I'm on the waiting list to be assessed for being on the Autistic spectrum, and to me the things you described as peculiarities of the Japanese mindset seem perfectly logical and reasonable. I wish people did them here in England to be honest! Having silences in conversation totally makes sense, as when you are someone for who the flow of social interaction does not not come normally you tend to be extremely aware instead of going with the flow - a lot of what people say here does tend to be space filler. I really do prefer when people take the time to digest information and serve up something meaningful. I completely understand the need to avoid offence or conflict and tailoring your interaction around this. Very nice food for thought there, thanks Chris.

All that comes to my mind from Sapporo is Sapporo beer, and they seem to have a beer garden & museum there. Seems like a cool place to visit.

TC Learn is dead? Their site is still up and accepting payment!? https://www.tokyocreative.com/learn/

Can't wait to see some more content around Sapporo! Going to be going there in October/November this year so ready to see what there is to do!

I was always wondering what happened to TC Learn since I did sub to it for a little bit before retracting it after noticing they were posting less. To hear them drop it with little announcement is a little disappointing but on the bright side, I am ecstatic that you're able to release your videos on YouTube! Your videos on there were absolutely fascinating and the ones I enjoyed the most, so rest assured to everyone else that you have some high-quality content on the way in the coming months! (Though man, it's a smallest of inconveniences but I wish the microphone didn't pick up the sound of your watch hitting the table haha).

Wow so much content all at once! I'm excited!

Oh, if you're looking for something lower key, we also had a fun time visiting a number tiny bars in a little building complex at the very end of the Tanukikoji Shopping Street. 純米酒専門 YATA 札幌狸小路店 was one were you could also sample a number of different sakes. Thanks for all the videos and podcasts! It actually inspired us to start our own travel podcast. :)

Enjoy Sapporo. My wife and I traveled up there last May and really enjoyed all our stops in Hokkaido (including Noboribetsu, which I agree is well worth a visit). In Sapporo we had a magical evening at a sake bar recommended by our guide to Daisetsuan National Park where we semi-joined someone's birthday party and chatted folks for a long time with our terrible broken and limited Japanese. We ended taking a long and great giant circle by train from Tokyo, up to Sapporo and back (with a stop in Tsuruoka and the Kamo Aquarium where some local tourism folks came up to us asked why we'd come to Tsuruoka - when I said we say it on youtube and like jelly fish they responded "Oh, Chris Broad?" )

So much content! It's like Chris-tmas all over again. These upcoming videos are going to be legendary. I'm frustrated about TC Learn too...it seemed like it had so much promise. And doubly so after watching your first video. They're so well-produced and informative. In fact, I'm just really confused about TC in general now. I really do like Emma and I'm glad she's getting so much exposure, but TC had so many interesting videos and topics they covered, and now it feels like they've just scaled it back to almost nothing. You're still working with them so you must have some faith in their plans for the future, so I'm hoping for the best. Guess we'll have to wait and see. But either way, I love the sounds of what's coming next on THIS channel! Keep up the great work, Chris.

I'm not surprised by what happened to TC Learn.
