My Japanese Love Life & The Easiest Place to Make Friends in Japan | Abroad Vlog

Hey guys!
Hope you’re all having a great weekend.

In this week’s Abroad Vlog (which is the Patreon vlog bit with a slightly more original name), I answer your questions, showcase some exciting new toys and examine upmarket Kit Kats.

Watch Abroad VLOG:

I’m currently in the process of ramming loads of tea and biscuits into a suitcase for the long flight back to Japan, and editing my way through part 2 of Journey Across to Japan (the Kobe to Kagoshima leg).

Once you’ve found yourself at the end of this week’s vlog, why not watch a video of Natsuki teaching his somewhat questionable pick up lines over on Tokyo Creative.

Or have a listen to this week’s Abroad in Japan Podcast, where Pete and I discuss whether Japan is really the robot utopian it’s cracked up to be. (I absolutely loved the Blade Runner inspired art work for this week’s episode).

I’m feeling super excited to be heading back and catching up with Ryotaro, Natsuki and the gang at Tokyo Creative; I keep daydreaming about sitting on the shores of the Sea of Japan with the snow blowing across my face, and then going into a nice warm cozy izakaya pub with Natsuki and eating ten plates of Yakitori.

- I look forward to turning that dream into reality in the next two weeks (and then sticking it in a Patreon vlog).

Send me in your comments and questions for the next vlog though guys, ask away!
Chris

I'd be interested in knowing about this too. As far as I've found out in my very basic reading the vowel sounds don't change so is it kind of like if you pronounce things properly you'll be understood or can you end up in a similar situation to a guy from Kent trying to understand a drunk Scotsman?

Hey Chris! I had a quick question for you. VR is becoming more popular and affordable here in the U.S., and I've seen articles and videos pop up about VR arcades in Tokyo. Do you think VR is seeing a similar surge in Japan, or is still a hobbyist/enthusiast product?

Nice call on the sound equipment! I've been wanting to do a travel/vlog channel when I arrive in Japan (if i bloody get there). How do you go about making your videos, and do you have any tips for beginners?

How do you think the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will change Japan? I have always wanted to go to Japan, but 2020 doesn't seem like the year to do it because of the high probability of increased tourism. What are your thoughts on this?

Having seen that Kit Kat gift box, I finally understand why it would make a good Christmas gift! And the image of you recording podcasts from a cardboard box with pillows is hilarious... I Had never thought that the actual situation could make the image I had of you recording at your kitchen bar look glamorous by comparison! XD

I vaguely remember you saying that you used some Anime and Manga to gauge your proficiency with Japanese, which series were your favourites to read/watch, and why was it cowboy bebop?

Nia Lathotep

Will you be doing something for the Rugby World Cup in Japan this year? Two matches will be held in the Tohoku region.

Good answers! I feel like I won a raffle lol. Thank you 😀

Or better still, Vegemite Kit Kats

Chris, do you remember me saying on the last Live Hangout that my mum-in-law, Jessie Eden, was one of the characters in Peaky Blinders. Well, that last series won Best Drama at the National TV Awards this week. The actress playing mum-in-law also won an Irish TV BAFTA (IFTA, I think) for playing her so well. This may yet be my proudest boast, fame by association (Also the knowledge that I supplied a lot of the details to Mum in laws biographer., and the series writer took them as his inspiration) I do hope you get to watch it, Most of my friends won't watch it as they find it too violent. Makes me sad,...

Are there any Kit Kats for the lactose intolerant shopper? :P

After being away from the UK for an extended amount of time, whats the hardest thing to get use to when you go back ?

Chris, I would like to know how your Japanese accent sounds to native-born Japanese speakers.

Michael Moore

If we happen to run into you in Japan/EU/US, would it be ok if we come and say hello? (please don't feel obligated to give a diplomatic "yes" answer, I am sure your fans would not want to bother you if you are not up for it)

When you mentioned the news article in the "Why I'm Not in Japan" video, you said Japanese people think we visit places for scenery rather than historical value. My question is, would you go to the Chinatown in Nagasaki, Japan's oldest Chinatown, this February to prove them wrong?

Your gadget segments remind me of Q from the Bond movies. It's great.

I'd love to have one of the sporty Kei cars, like the Honda S660.

How do you think a marmite-flavored KitKat would fare in Japan?
