Why I'm very angry.

Hey folks!

I hope you're all having a great weekend so far!

So I'll be posting this week's Patreon vlog tomorrow discussing numerous events from this week including North Korea, merchandise, and my new nightmare of Youtube demonetisation.

I've just spent the last few days locked away in a room producing this new video about the current North Korean situation, and having uploaded it and made it public for all to watch, IT WAS INSTANTLY DEMONETISED BY YOUTUBE for being a touchy subject.

I'm going to rant about this in tomorrow's vlog, but I just wanted to say a big thank you to all of you again for supporting the Abroad in Japan channel. I've had numerous videos demonetised by Youtube this week, in accordance with their (and fatally flawed) advertising policies.

And quite honestly, if it weren't for Patreon and for you support, I'd be terrified right about now. It's sad to think contemporary global issues such as North Korea, are prevented from earning ad-revenue. In time, Youtube's content will become far less diverse, and saturated with "hilarous" reaction videos, puppies and rainbows.

In the mean time though, there are far more worrying things at stake, as you'll discover in this week's video. You can watch it here:

Thanks guys and I'll see you all in tomorrow's vlog!

I always assumed the youtuber got a cut as long as we watched the ads, it just makes sense, their content is the one pulling in the views?? after i learned this I immediately become a patron to the two youtubers I watch nearly every day, you and NeebsGaming. Love your stuff man :)

While I cannot 100% guarantee that I am not a stalker, terrorist, or North Korean assassin hellbent on revenge in the name of our Supreme Leader, I am -probably in vain- inquiring if you have (no doubt, valid) aversions to meeting your fans when they visit Japan. I shall be there for several days, from Himeji to Tokyo, and was wondering if there was any possibility of requisitioning a pint or two (or two hour all-you-can-drink) for you. I am aware you are in Sendai, but you seem to travel a great deal. Just thought I would ask. No harm in questions, eh?

No wait, make that I *will* upgrade mine. I'm sure you can think of an interesting perk that doesn't give you too much extra work. Maybe something to do with merch? Like a small discount, or add a little cute something with each purchase... I know that kind of tactic would work devilishly well with me, and I'd end up buying more merch than I would've originally, so win-win for everyone. Perhaps you could do a poll with suggestions for another tier, asking what would make your Patrons upgrade their tier to 10$ or something like that.

Oh wow, this seems pretty interesting! He could add it on un-monetized videos and suggest the amount he'd get per view if they were monetized, or something like that.

Yeah the monetization mechanics of vid.me are a lot more fair I think. And nothing prevents someone from being on both platforms, so...

good one, I lol'd

Maybe try putting a higher pledge I'm sure people would do it, I would have done the $20 but it was sold out ;_; Maybe offer a free Tshirt or something and do the pledge at $50 (:

I know you're feeling burned by YouTube at the moment, but you did a great job! Very informative, with just the right amount of hilarity. You can tell how much thought and energy you put into it. That said, YouTube is slowly going down the tubes, so if you feel like you need to try and rally more support in the future, do what you have to do. If people understood how stupid some of these policies were--and how much $1 contribution can do to help you do what you do--I'm sure more folks would pitch in.

This was a really great video, Chris. It blended your signature sarkiness with serious engagement with the subject and addressing the reactions the previous video had got. Seriously well done.

Don't worry, I'm feeling enough anxiety for the both of us after hearing that news. It's so stupid how one thing can haunt you this long. Stupid trending garbage list.

This whole new youtube micro managing bull shit pisses me off..

I have to tell you, you're very good at handling serious topics. You inject the correct amount of humor without it being forced, and you know when to buckle down and stop making jokes for a minute, then end on a lighter note. Impressive, not a lot of people can do that, and I like hearing your opinions on these things. Plus I'm not totally well informed, so I'm glad you're talking about this stuff. It's of particular significance to me because I plan to live both in Japan and South Korea in the future. Also fuck YouTube innit

Man, I love when you call people out on their negativity with your special brand of humor. Restores my faith in humanity a little. 😆🐻

That sucks donkeyballs. I hadn't realised that you were getting demonetised too (controversial, really?) so I thought it was about time that I chipped in a bit on Patreon. Best of luck to you Chris, keep doing what you're doing.

i do hope someone makes a new, bigger, better youtube that isnt just pure capitalism

it means I have joined at the right time! I was thinking for some time to do it, and now that I am a bit more financially stable I thought that I can share a bit with someone who provides me interesting information etc. And I still hope that I will send somewhere a PO address to send some sweets and stuff from my country

saiko

I will increase my pledge now. Thank you for more substance than all fluff.

It's a very rewarding club to be in.

If you create a 10$ pledge of something, I might just upgrade mine.

I was going to become a patron next month but that was outrageous, so here I am.

Youtubers already accepted the terms of Red a while ago, if not they'd be blocked in the US. It's not about YT creators switching to Red, it's about YT viewers switching to Red. The more of your users who are signed up to Red, the better for you the creator, because then a higher percentage of your money comes from Red subs than from fickle advertising. This is the main reason why I sub to Red - though naturally direct Patreon support is always best. Also, I've seen it confirmed elsewhere that even if your video is demonetized, you still get revenue on views from Red subscribers. Of course only a fraction of YT viewers will ever sub for Red, so this isn't exactly a full solution to the problem.

It blows my mind that some people still talk shit about content creators using the likes of Patreon, with Youtube shitting all over it's creators lately (for years if you're an animator) it's probably the only thing keeping content coming.

Nice conclusive video on an inconclusive subject.

Hey Chris, you can request an appeal if the video has 1000 views within a week. Well, to be honest you can request an appeal anytime but it will only be taken into consideration if your video generates views, or its consider profitable by YT (...pricks). I thinks this is a way to "incentivize" Youtubers to switch to YT Red....Anyways hope it helps Regards from Costa Rica.

this video was perfectly crafted :D well done for getting your sarcastic humour in there :D

Regarding North Korea's hydrogen bomb test, apparently the Chinese as well as western scientists are worried the test has destabilized the magma chamber under Mount Paetku, because of continuing quakes. China has restricted access to the region. It would be ironic if North Korea's nuclear saber rattling resulted in the eruption of this super volcano and the subsequent destruction of their country. But of course, terrible as well.

I kinda hope a new platform will pop up which will challenge Youtube. Small creators on YouTube are, in my opinion, what makes the platform great and the people working at Youtube keep finding new ways to push valuable creators away.

i'm scared of the future of YouTube as there is many channels that make interesting videos where you can actually learn Something . They spending hours/days trying to find out how to expalin subject in such a way that everyone can understand with very little knowledges about it . Now we're gonna get even less of that and more of useless video " top 10 handspinner on puppies Raibow background!! " or " Top 100 of the best top 100 videos on YT" hoo man i'm scared really glad patreon has been created for us to support or favourite creators !! :) cheers from France ( soon from Sapporo ^^)

well, if we're not advertising on touchy subjects, I expect I'll no longer be seeing ads air during news broadcasts?

I've even heard that YouTube videos that strictly follow the advertising guidelines still get demonetized... It's a terrible situation.

Do you happen to know about this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOAvSwX7Aqc maybe possible solutions, idk.

I just upgraded my pledge 💛💛

fixxnfoxy

We all should search for another platform like vid.me or something. .__.

That's the reason I became a patron. Thanks for the great content! I'm in Tokyo for three months, so any chance you'll do 'Natsuki The Movie' and meetup before I go? 30% of the reason I'm here is for that! -- Edit: I'll up my pledge to $10 if you do!

Jesus, how the hell is "North Korea is pretty fucked up" a touchy subject? I think everybody BUT North Korea agree, and so far as I can tell they aren't the ones paying for all the ads we see popping up on YouTube! Isn't there some way you can get YouTube to check the video and remove the demonetisation? I seem to remember another YouTuber mentioning that they frequently have to get their videos checked because the automated system always demonetises them for invalid reasons.

Ben C Brown

Keep it up Chris! My decision to support for you on Patreon is indeed a correct one, but since I'm financially restricted at the moment I can't pledge more at the moment. Rest assured that you have all our backs, and I'll increase my pledge in the near future :)

That does seem bullshit on YouTubes part. Good thing you've got Patreon and us ;)

James Keen

Exactly why I became a patreon. Good luck~
