Fiber Optics, Existential Physics, & What To Do About Nuclear Waste

AI Proves Good at Predicting Meta-material Properties

Researchers from the University of Amsterdam have trained software to predict properties of metamaterials and found it to work unexpectedly well, according to a paper that just appeared in PRL. Lead author Ryan van Mastrigt said, “the neural networks have actually learned the mathematical rules underlying the metamaterial properties, even when we don’t know all the rules ourselves.”

This finding may vastly accelerate the development of new metamaterials. I talked about applications of metamaterials in this video.

The Many Uses Of Fiber Optics Cables

We know fiber optics cables as the technology that brings live streams to your house, but did you know they can also be used to pick up minute deformations in Earth’s surface, with a wide range of applications? Very interesting article about this on Knowable Magazine here.

Public Lecture About Existential Physics

In August, I gave a public lecture at the Royal Institution in London about my new book, Existential Physics. The recording is now available on YouTube. If you prefer to read, there’s an interview with me in The Guardian here.
