Coming up on May 28

On Saturday we'll return to a topic I seem to be talking about a lot: quantum mechanics. In particular, I want to pick up a point that isn't widely known, even among physicists. Quantum mechanics is widely believed to reproduce classical mechanics -- flying arrows and dropping rocks and all -- but actually this doesn't work out properly, especially for chaotic systems. For it to work out, you basically have to believe that the moon isn't there if you don't look. I explain this in more detail on Saturday.

Comments

That's a longer comment than I first intended, but I've been thinking about this sort of thing and how it's all connected a lot over the last several years.

Hi Rad. Bluntly, I don't know how really for the U.S.A., mate. 😢 The Prime Minister responsible for bringing in our gun laws *also* made same-sex marriages unable to be carried out until that was repealed in 2017, after an utterly unnecessary plebiscite instead of our then-PM just being decent and making it legal anyway. The associations of gun owners in Australia don't have so much political sway as the NSA, thankfully. The 'freedumb' political contingent in Aus is definitely fringe, and with the COVID-19 pandemic on the news backburner they have even less sway. The best answer I can give us that Australia's political structure, albeit driven by 2 major parties, allows for minor-party and Independent politicians to represent their local populations whilst influencing state and national laws from the Senate. It helps when much of the population is really fed-up with the shit-fuckery of the previous incumbent government, which the U.S.A. and Australia both had in spades. An American friend explained to me when I asked about equal rights being eroded that Biden can't wipe out bigotry and make queer and transgender people protected by federal decree because the individual states have more autonomy in law-making than the Aus states and territories. It'll require a massive, concentrated effort over the entire country to change things but the fact that Biden is POTUS is a decent start. (People, no commentary on queer and transgender people not being valid/a danger from anyone please, I'm not wanting a shit-storm in our pleasant corner of the Net thanks.) I do firmly believe the tide is turning in the US and to borrow what cartoonist Sophie Labelle has said, no matter what laws are made, we've already won. I believe that's true for humanitarian causes and fairness in general. In short, enormous numbers of people working in concert will work eventually, but right now, I don't know. I do know many feel as you do; that's a great encouragement.

Not so fast. What can we do here to get rid of the gun touting NRA cancer that has metastasized all over the GOP? I don’t understand how any parent can vote for a member of that party, given it’s leadership’s role in enabling violence against children. Yet, here we are, in desperate need of help from civilized nations. Australia had its own bout with the disease and seems to have beaten it.

And speaking of destruction - I have to share that in our recent Federal elections, the Liberal National coalition of Australia got voted out big-time, to be replaced by the far more democratic Labor Party, which looks much better for innovation in alternative renewable energy creation and storage, and for human rights and the environment in general. It's a massive paradigm shift in Australia. 😀🎉 Now, back to our regular programming!

Destroying physics is part of the joy that is babies. Besides, someone has to do it, methinks. 😆

Ah, so object permanence is the problem with quantum mechanics. OK everyone, stop playing peekaboo with babies -- every shriek of joy when they see your face destroys physics.

I'll happily watch it again. 😀

you accidentally posted this the other day >_> still looking forward to it!
