I still use a final-generation Airport Time Capsule with external USB drives as my NAS. It works fine as my primary use is for Time Machine backups and some manual backups from Apple devices. I turned off all non-NAS functions, such as routing and WiFi, and put them on a UPS with my ISP router. I hold out some hope that when Apple announces the new smart home products, at least one has NAS functionality.
