Hello!!
How is March going for you all? Hope you’re enjoying life one moment at a time and not being too hard on yourselves <3
I want to share my process for this piece I made for Streets of France zine. Originally I wanted to share a process video, and I did record it… but when I looked at what was recorded it was a blinding 4 hour video of a blank screen… nothing was recorded, not even my occasional screams while painting the windows. BUT I made a process GIF and hopefully you can still see the important steps.
My friend sent me a picture from France the day I was invited to the zine, I fell in love with the picture and I thought boy this is destiny I NEED to paint it!! Because I’m always dramatic like that, and she agreed yay. I looked up the street on Google Street View and gathered a bunch of pics to be able to draw the buildings on the left and right side. It was like finding puzzle pieces, I loved it.
So, my secret not so secret formula for painting backgrounds is: block the main big shapes > then medium shapes/ objects> then small details > then textures> after that lighting everything at once. Don’t stress tiny window details and tree leaves from the beginning, once you paint the bigger shapes and gradually move to details everything will feel much less overwhelming. Also I always love to pay attention to shape language and choose shapes that feel unified in a way, I really envy artists whose art is just a heaven of sharp and confident shapes. But we’ll get there someday.
Oh turns out I can talk a lot sometimes, oh well.
Thank you always, also new patrons welcome! I already love you. Sending you all billion tons of love!! Take care, stay hydrated and don’t forget your mask! <333
