Weekly 2018-05-07 : Pre-coloring of ep25 is done (screenshots+tips)

Hi Patrons, after an intensive week, I finished to 'pre-color' all the nine pages of episode 25 yesterday and I posted the full beta version on Framagit for feedback and translation.

(
you can read it here
)

"Pre-color"?

The purpose of the Pre-color step is to paint the global ambiance of the scene with skipping all details. In this step I can focus on the mood of the scene and where the light come from.

To initiate this step, I have to get rid of the noise and distracting details from my drawings, I had to degrade a bit the quality of them. I'm not 100% sure of this step, I have idea for the next episode how to improve here. But for now it works: the pencil lines transforms into soft 'painted lines'; and it helps my brain to do the transition to color them on the overall.

I'm using the GMIC filter Photocomic[smoothing] for melting the drawing. It's destructive but it works pretty well at removing unnecessary noise and clean up a bit the situation. Also, all the crosshatch transforms into cloud of gray value, and many construction lines just disappears.

Then I'm using only brushes without hard edges as airbrush presets, and I keep the zoom to 25% or less to keep a view on the overall (as you can see on screenshot on the top of this weekly). I also use the sub-windows mode in Krita to display the current page with the previous page side-by-side. This method gives me a good control on the overall color palette and light setup of the episode and I really enjoyed to do this process.

( top picture: a good example of what I'll do next week: transforming the Pre-color into Detailing. A workflow I used on episode 8: The Birthday Party. )

A good way to start a pre-color for a scene with multiple ground is to start with the background ( sky/mountains) , and slowly reach to the foreground elements.

Weekly live streaming

This week I colored a sketch : "Tambourine of Light" into the weekly live streaming, you can watch the replay on Peertube here.

That's all!

So now it is time for me to pick a small brush, a color picker and cleanup and detail all of this.

Thank you for your support!
