So while I really liked the Farewell, I think that a lot of the praise has been misdirected. The shots are good, but the narrative and themes are muddled. The performance by Tzi Ma, Diana Lin and Zhao Shuzhen are exceptional, but Awkwafina's performance is bland and unconvincing. It's a fascinating film as an case study for its muddled approach and muddled social reception. Would love to hear your thoughts.
