The Queen's Gambit Episode 1 (2020) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

It's time for a new series!!!

A great first episode seeing as I love getting a character's backstory. Oh boy is there a lot going on with her already.

She's pretty astounding 🤩 I wonder how many people started playing chess after watching this series 🤣

I'm so excited for the next one!!

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  You can set picture in picture by right clicking twice on the video and selecting "Picture in picture". The right clicking twice is a bit tricky, because you have to right click, then move your cursor so it's not on the menu, then right click again

Thank you so much everyone for your support, you are the best!!

They did a great job with the first episode, wanting us to watch the next one immediately haha. I'm so glad that so many people love this show, it makes it really nice to share the experience :D They did a great job showing us how she progressively got better and just how much the custodian was teaching her. He's not babying her, which is fantastic!!

I am glad you enjoyed the first episode, I cant wait for the next, I didnt not binge the show since it came out and I already feel that its gonna be hard to wait for the week to week, anyway really excited for the rest! I just love this show! About the surrender move, if you lose the queen (the strongest piece on the board) that early (almost all pieces were still on the board) because of a stupid mistake, its almost impossible to win if you play against someone better or even someone on the same skill level as you, so rather than dragging out a game you pretty much cant win anymore, you give up so you dont waste anyones time.

We're on the same page for chess knowledge! haha. Diagonal and a straight does make sense, but visualizing the L is so much more fun for me 🤣 I guess between being in an orphanage, or out on the streets/fending for yourself, the orphanage is probably better overall, but still not ideal. Then again, if Beth's mother was still alive, I'm not sure how great that would be for her either 🤔

I am exactly 1 episode in haha I like how they introduce us to one of Beth's hardships that is present throughout her whole life. I hope you enjoy the re-watch!!! 😁🤩

Huh, that's really interesting. Does this mean it's time for a rewatch 😁

Thanks for the insight. I like it when people have background info to expand on what we see, or in my case probably miss, or simply just don’t know.

I’ve been meaning to watch this show for years, so this is the welcome nudge I needed. I know the chess pieces and how they move but that’s it. I’ve also thought of the knights’ moves as an L shape, never entered my head that it can be described as diagonal and straight, much more efficient. Interesting first episode, I’m looking forward to seeing how it develops. I took it that Beth’s mother’s last words of “close your eyes” was to suggest the fatal crash was not an accident 🤷‍♂️ . 50’s orphanages look a little bleak, but at least offered some structure and stability I guess, oh and seemingly unnecessary drugs. I too like shows that tell the story they wanted to tell and that’s it, without drawing it out beyond its welcome. Let’s see what episode two brings.

I don't know how far ahead you are.. but I like this for you.. this has some interesting characters and Beth's story is multi-facetted.. I have seen this when it came out, but this is a great excuse to re-watch. Thanks..

Great reaction. I really enjoyed it. 😁😁😁 In chess, it is considered polite to resign when you have no chance of winning or getting a draw. In the scene with Mr. Scheibel, Beth had just lost a queen for a bishop. That would put her at a huge material disadvantage. At the higher levels of play, one would be expected to resign after a blunder like that. Of course, at the higher levels of play, it would be extremely unlikely for someone to make a blunder like that.... One of the fun things about The Queen's Gambit is that all of the chess games were curated by a couple of actual chess grandmasters. The actors would memorize the moves from the games selected by the curators and make the appropriate moves during filming. And yes, back in those days some orphanages really did use tranquilizers to make the orphans more "manageable".

I watched this when it first came out and I remember liking it. But I couldn't tell you a single thing about it today.
