The Equalizer (2014) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

It's time for the Denzel poll winner!

I always expect typical action movies when the poster is the actor with a gun. I'm glad this wasn't your typical action movie 😁

Denzel does serious scenes really well, but he also does lighthearted and funny scenes extremely well too! Thankfully he has a LOT of movies for me to watch.

This movie is a good reminder for everyone to treat others and lift them up when they're down. Robert is such a good person when it comes to that 🥰

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

The Equalizer (2014) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

It's always hard to know which version to watch. I'm obviously more tempted to watch the newer one since Denzel Washington and Liev Shreiber are in it :D

Verowak

Manchurian candidate is my favorite but not sure as a reaction as it requires a lot of paying attention and lots of audience may/may not follow. Its a GREAT movie and remake i think but the original is best.

Watched them. Sheepdog trope as you said. Good movies, but it is for the one and done type of people. Easy company in Band of Brothers was in combat less than a year. June44-May45. And not all of the time at the front. What do you do with someone like me that can multiply that by 3 in country and worked Realtime UAV missions for another decade +? Fit back into society after that. It is not happening. It will never happen. Not with less than 1% of people that can even by a clue of what it is like. TY for the suggestions. They where all decent movies.

Even Vero loves the sheepdog trope. That is why she loves the bad batch so much! But even when she moves on to the Mandorlian etc it is the same thing. Just sheepdog. But the sheepdog is BS. I was a WOLF. And so was everyone else. Now I am a lamb, but still struggle everyday. I am a Xenial born in 79. I will look into because I have not seen what you mentioned and will get back to you. I have already read Starship Troopers multiple times. It is more a political essay than a novel....same as if one reads Ayn Rand. Worth a read, but meh there are problems. I have also read all of the Jack Ryan series of books (they are good reads) and so I know the Mr Clark well. The problem comes in when it is not one and done...a simple 3-8 yr contract and done. A one and done person one can tell the sheepdog lie too and they will believe it. But that is just it. It is a LIE. A lie for greedy/ignorant people. I am much like the Hound from Game of Thrones that has been to hell and back for decades and just not care anymore. As someone that has worked CJSOTF (Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force) in AF for more than a decade. Clancy is wrong. We are not the competent, and the higher ups are much more corrupt than you can possibly imagine. I say that as a retired E-8 that was army FA then AF Intel (Imagery) then worked for the NGA (National Geospatial Agency) in the targeting section. That is where the moral injury of war lies. I do not believe that I can be fixed to ever mesh with society ever again. With great knowledge comes great sorrow. One can not un see what one has seen, or unknown what one knows. For me it is as certain as the son rising in the East. Or as sabaton as said in The price of a mile song...what was the purpose of it all? Just to distract people and make greedy people rich. That is why I struggle everyday.

@Daniel Looney Hollywood loves the sheepdog trope, even if many Hollywoodians are contemptuous of them in real life. You might want to check out the true story of former US Marine, later Sheriff, Buford Pusser in the "Walking Tall" movies. The first is from 1973 with Joe Don Baker, followed by several sequels, later several remakes with Kevin Sorbo (2007) and Dwayne Johnson (2004). The popularity of the fictional C.O. Paul Kersey from the book "Death Wish", later played by Charles Bronson in the 1974 movie and franchise, added to the trope. Marvel's Frank Castle (also from the early 1970's) pretty much cemented it for Gen-X. Going farther back, the society of Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" (the book, not the movie) is also based on the idea of the sheepdogs and other high responders accepting the responsibility of protecting the flock. The origin story of Tom Clancy's character Mr. Clark is anther good example of the popularity of the trope.

A History of Violence! That's a movie that I completely forgot about but wanted to watch when it released. It just never played in theatres in my town.

I'll be checking the poll for the Denzel movies that I want to watch and see how the votes played out :D

Good movies sort of similar to "The Equalizer" "Eastern Promises" (2007) Viggo Mortensen. Mostly drama, less action "A History of Violence" (2005) Viggo Mortensen, Ed Harris "Payback" (1999) Mel Gibson, Lucy Liu "Death Wish" (1974 original) Charles Bronson. Based on a book. 1st of 5 movies "Out of Sight" (1998) George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez. Based on a book by Elmore Leonard "Parker" (2013) Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez. Heist movie "The Italian Job" (2003 remake) Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Donald Sutherland, Jason Statham. Heist movie.

JAKH

Recommendations for good Denzel movies: "Equalizer 2" (2018 w/ Pedro Pascal "Man on Fire (2004 remake) Dakota Fanning, Christopher Walken "The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3" (2009 remake) w/ John Travolta, James Gandolfini, Luiz Guzman. heist movie "Glory" (1989) w/Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, Andre Braugher, Cary Elwes. True story set during ACW. "Fallen" (1998) police/detective movie with a twist The equalizer is the only movie for which Denzel has ever made a sequel, and he did 2. Indicates that he really likes this character.

Two ways to view the world. Taken from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k62we47leY no spoilers on nothing you have not seen. I trust that you understand the difference.

Daniel Looney

ALL movies are made up stories. Even things like Band of Brothers were put in an honorable light. Do you really think you can understand or know in 12 hours watching the show what it was actually like for over a year for Capt/Major Winters? Throw a bone or two of yeah we did bad stuff. But 12 hours in vs more than 8700 in a year. I see things different than most. I trust you to understand.

Daniel Looney

You haven't at all, no worries! ❤️

Verowak

I’m sure that can happen. I’ve learned a tiny bit more, but I won’t go into any detail, and I’m sorry if I’ve already given you any preconceived ideas

Giving a 0 to a movie feels like someone felt thought the movie was a personal attack on them so they got angry and gave it a 0, basically they got upset/disagreed with something and took it the complete wrong way🤣

Verowak

I’ve never heard of that one. Just looked at the metacritic ratings and it reminded me why they are utterly pointless - ratings range from 75 to 0. I’m quite shallow, so I can’t imagine ever giving something 0, bound to find something redeemable. I’m slightly interested to see why it could be rated so low, but I suspect I’d remain oblivious. I personally found Dakota excellent in Man On Fire.

James Hadden

Sneaky! :D I remember hearing of two of those: Man on Fire and The Bone Collector. I think Angelina Jolie is in The Bone Collector and a young Dakota Fanning is in Man on Fire. "I am Sam" is a movie that I want to see at some point (due to Dakota Fanning getting insanely amazing reviews)

Verowak

Yes top 3 is a bit tricky. As The Book of Eli is already on your radar I’m going to be cheeky and make sure not to include it (although to be fair might not make the podium anyway). Out of the 11 I own, I’ll go with the following (and keep my comments vague): Man On Fire (2004) - I’m such a fan of the character pairing. Deja Vu (2006) - I think there’s objectively better movies but there’s just something about this one that speak to me. The Bone Collector (1999) - I will never, ever, forget spoiling this by simply watching the trailer. And yet, loved every minute. It’s been a minute since I watched it, so hopefully still holds up. Flight (2012) - I know this makes four, but if I was recommending movies for someone else to watch, cough, I’d substitute this for Deja Vu

James Hadden

Slow build ups are so rewarding!! I'm just like you, calm characters are very enjoyable, moreso as I get older. If a character talks all the time, I get annoyed quickly 😂. Since you're a big Denzel fan, what are your top three Denzel movies (I know this might be tough, but just some movies of his that you really enjoyed). Yeah I figured out it was to his wife afterwards lol. Makes so much more sense than what I was trying to piece together lol The plot hole of "take him alive quietly/no witnesses" is pretty annoying. It's the only way to have the protagonist not killed instantly haha The car exhaust scene was... A choice. Definitely the weakest scene in the movie lol I'm going to have to make time for Book of Eli!

Verowak

Ahhh!!! Interesting! There are so many older actors that I'll definitely not know about, so thank you!

Verowak

Most movies are made up stories. They are not to be taken seriously. Everyone experiences life differently and I don't think this movie is saying everyone that has gone through "X" has the same issues. If anything, this movie is playing into the "Russians are bad" trope like a lot of movies do. Sometimes movies show 1 particular individual's life. I feel like we didn't watch the same movie since we got very different understanding of what the theme of this movie was lol

Verowak

Nice reaction, but a horrible movie on the themes it presents etc. It paints people like me as dangerous. We are not that. But trust me do not provoke. Kind discussion okay, But the entire movie is pointed to the 1% (that has ever served) to the 1% of those that are dangerous. My math in is rather fuzzy 1%/ by 1% is rather hazy been a awhile since in college math class,. I am sure though, that is a really tiny #. Rather than sending the message STFU and let sleeping dogs lie. Or at least give a pat on the head. Typical fear BS. Is all this movie is

Daniel Looney

BTW, you’ve seen Edward Woodward (original tv show lead) before in Hot Fuzz - he’s the member of the NWA monitoring the CCTV cameras

James Hadden

I really like this one, especially the quiet, slow build up. As I’ve got older I enjoy calm characters even more 😁 I was struggling to find my disc copy and then remembered I have all my Denzel movies grouped together - he’s in my top 3 of favourite actors. There are so many great movies. You probably guessed in retrospect but I assume Robert’s apology was to his late wife, after promising her he was done with his previous life. I don’t know if it’s a plot hole (I don’t mind if it’s just so the cool action scene can play out) but I was never sure why they needed to take him quietly with no witnesses considering they own the police. Besides, it’s not as egregious as the car exhaust fumes scene 😁 I think the ending with him posting offers of help feeds into the serial nature of the tv show. I have vague recollections of the original show back in the 80s due to the British actor Edward Woodward, but I wasn’t really old enough to watch it. Never seen the new one though. I don’t remember anything that happens in the second movie but I don’t think I liked it. Possibly unable to capture the heart of the original? I really enjoyed The Book of Eli (it features another favourite actor of mine).
