American Psycho (2000) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Bonus reaction time!

For Psychology class, I had to watch a movie from the following list:

- Silence of the Lamb
- Manhunter or Red Dragon
- American Psycho
- Cool Hand Luke
- A Clockwork Orange
- The Talented Mr. Ripley
- Taxi Driver
- Mr. Brooks

And do an essay on the psycopath or sociopath in the movie.  I went with American Psycho since I've been wanting to see it for a while and it stars Christian Bale in what I thought was his first lead role.

All I can say is that he did a phenomenal job, and it was a joy to watch him in this role, compared to his role in The Prestige.

I have to say that that was one strange, deranged character ๐Ÿ˜จ

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

American Psycho (2000) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

Umm.. let's not see Paul Allen's reaction ๐Ÿ˜จ What a way to go

Verowak

Nice reaction video Vero, very nice.*swallows* Now lets see Paul Allenโ€™s reaction ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ˜จ

Bruce Wesley

I loved his movie adapted to music video for it... not a bad remake of the song either IMO ๐Ÿ“ฝ๐ŸŽฌ๐ŸŽต

WhatTheExpletive

I'm glad you enjoyed it!! And yes you can definitely paste links here :D

Verowak

Great share!!

WhatTheExpletive

Great reaction and watch along... Here is something, a little gem, if your a fan of this film may bring a smile "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G29d6RDSK1c" I hope it is OK to paste links here, not sure how else to share this~

WhatTheExpletive

I highly recommend "Mr. Brooks" (2007) from your list. I'm not really a Kevin Costner fan, but "Mr. Brooks" and "A Perfect World" are probably his best performances IMO. Plus an MCU fan might like to see William Hurt. After that, "Manhunter" and its sequel "The Silence of the Lambs" are the others that I would recommend off that list. I'd recommend "Manhunter" and skip the remake "Red Dragon".

References for the cinephile: - The morning workout video is a scene from the original 1974 version of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" - Patrick Bateman references real-life serial killers Ed Gein and Ted Bundy. Ed Gein (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Gein) was the inspiration for several other characters in the list of movies you were to chose from: Hannibal Lector, Buffalo Bill, Francis Dollarhyde, and Norman Bates. - He uses the excuse of a lunch with "Cliff Huxtable" to end his meeting with private detective Kimball (DaFoe). "Dr. Cliff Huxtable" was Bill Cosby's character on "The Cosby Show" in the 1980's. With the movie set in the mid-1980's, DaFoe's character should have recognized the lie using the name of a character from one of the most watched shows of the time.

JAKH

Norman Bates, Patrick Bateman: deliberate reference?

JAKH

Pop culture reference: an iconic bit of dialogue from "Cool Hand Luke" is sampled in the opening of the Guns & Roses song "Civil War".

JAKH

I saw a picture of Christian Bale from that movie.... insane body transformation, and very scary too

Verowak

I do hope you get to "The Machinist" some day.

In the US roughly 120 hours to a Bachelor Degree in whatever. The First 60 or hours is called an Associate's degree. That is when one takes English 1 and 2. Pych or Sociology and there is some choice of "electives" one can take but still have to pass Algebra Biology, Physical Science etc. Last two years of schooling you get into the meat and potatoes of what one is learning. There are often multiple paths one can take even then! In all of my post graduate work I have never had to take a freshman level course again. Only classes I had to retake or test out of was the Math and Science courses because they needed to be within 5 years to get into nursing school. Which makes sense. So please understand my confusion and enjoy the easy A! (Even though it does still a lot of time! uggg) . I feel bad that you have endure this. :)

No one is forcing me to do anything. In post secondary school in Canada, most degrees have what we call electives. For those, we get to choose one course from a list of 20 that are outside our program. Psychology is not a necessary course for engineering, so I never had a psych class. It's weird that psych is needed for engineering in the US though, since it has nothing to do with engineering.

Verowak

Canada is not the US. But I have never had to retake basic Pysch. Did I take a more advanced course when in I was in nursing school. Yes. Even had to work for 2-3 weeks in a Pych ward. Why is CA forcing you to take this course? You already did it to get your Civil Engineering degree. Pych has 0 to do with python programming. What is going up north for my CA homies? Why are they making you waste money to retake a class you already had?

I'm pretty sure he did Miami Vice. He would have Edward James Olmos do scenes like in Japanese style aesthetics... for example having them talking about very important things but they're looking in the distance not at each other. Let's say a crime boss with political ties is going on a rampage, Olmos is meticulously trimming a little bonzai tree while detective Crockett is waiting at a distance. Olmos never looks up but says in a quiet yet gritty voice "The weeds have spread too far. I want you to tear it all down." He says this in a quiet tone with no emotion. What he means is to continue the investigation knowing that there will be political heat and also regardless of careers being at risk. He's giving the detective permission to weed out corruption in the system. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Without overdoing it they frame the story into a larger context of the hierarchy of power within the system that they're working in. Usually the detective is working against restrictions like wading through molasses. But with their lieutenant's support they are freed to move forward without hesitation. It's implied storytelling where you have to read between the lines, a hallmark of Japanese style storytelling ๐Ÿ˜„ then later it will circle around to make an earlier point more meaningful.

Mannygogou

It is worth watching = )

Mannygogou

Yeah the more I think about that movie. It would really be "No Eyes" and the other Guards that were the psychos and especially the camp warden. The famous line from that movie was. "What we got here is, Failure to communicate"

Scott Howard

The essay has to do with psychopaths OR sociopaths, so if there isn't a psycho in the movie, I assume there's a sociopath of some kind lol This was the first time I ever heard of Cool Hand Luke, so it wasn't on my radar before this :D

Verowak

Cool Hand Luke seems out of place in that list. The only other ones I've seen in that list is Silence of the lambs and Taxi driver, I can definitely see why they're in that list. But Cool Hand Luke. I guess you might say that 'No Eyes' is the psycho but not the Newman character. However Cool Hand Luke is a real classic that you should consider watching.

Scott Howard

The knife in the shower, that's all I know :D I would be curious to see it at some point

Verowak

It's always nice to see someone's early work. We get to see how they've changed over the years :D

Verowak

๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸคฃI love it! That's what I'm going by until I watch the movie. I certainly hope Mark Hamill is in it ๐Ÿ˜

Verowak

actually at first I saw "Psycho" in the title and thought Alfred Hitchcock!

Mannygogou

ooh nice... Manhunter is pretty cool too from what I remember. Older movie though it is, from 1986... and it's early Michael Mann, ooh.

Mannygogou

"Cool Hand Luke" was Luke Skywalker's new nickname after Vader chopped it off in Episode 5 ๐Ÿ˜‚
