Idle speculation based on the story so far. I'm usually wrong when I post this kind of comment so don't take it too seriously. This time I'd be surprised if none of the following is correct, though. I'm thinking: what if neither baby died? This is what I'm thinking: 1 - the Prince's concubine, Ah-Duo, gives birth to a son. This is publicly announced as a joyous happening - yay! 2 - the Emperor's concubine gives birth close to the same time, but not to a son... to a daughter - nay! 3 - the Emperor's concubine takes A-Duo's son. I think it would have to be given voluntarily with enticements of status for the son and mother both - remember she remained a concubine even though the Prince, now Emperor, doesn't visit her in that capacity any more. Could be part of the deal? 4 - Ah-Duo's baby now with the Emperor's concubine, an announcement is made that Ah-Duo's baby has passed away. The court now has an extra, female, baby on it's hands. They can't pass it off to Ah-Duo as she's already announced, or it's at least common knowledge, that she had a son. It would cast all kinds of suspicion on her entire house if it was suddenly revealed she had "lied" about her baby's gender. So, what to do with the "extra" baby girl? 5 - plot point: we already know that a serious mistake by a lowly staff member will result in their execution. 6 - plot point: Why is the doctor who neglected his duty of care and allowed Ah-Duo's son to die, just fired and not executed? Sure, babies die all the time, but this baby's death led to the doctor being fired. If they thought he was responsible, or negligent, or in some way the cause of the baby's death, he'd have been executed, not fired. 7 - speculation: the doctor was asked to kill the unwanted baby girl. He refused, but said he would raise the girl himself if they'd allow that. He leaves his employment, but remains close by, and raises the baby girl as his own daughter, Maomao. We know she can't be her "father's" daughter because he was a Eunoch 17-18 years ago, when she was born. I'm not sure of her age but she's under 20 as she was upset about the possibility of the drinking age being set to 20. 8 - conclusion: Maomao is the old Emperor's daughter; Junshin is the son of the current Emperor and concubine Ah-Duo. 9 - further speculation: Someone who knows about all the above purposely had her kidnapped and brought to the rear palace. This could be because they want family close by, even if they could never admit the familial connection, or, I think more likely, as part of this mysterious conspiracy that seems to be going on in the background. I expect some of that to be at least close to correct, but it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong entirely lol - Please don't reply with spoilers either way because I'm really enjoying this series so far. I wish I'd been here when this was brand new on the channel. It's a little sad having such thoughts about the series and not being to have a conversation about any of them.

The "Xiao" is similar to calling her "Maomao-Chan"

There was a one part I was confused in this episode and I'm sharing this just incase someone else was confused. I read a comment that the translation of the emperor and Ah-Duo being "foster siblings" is apparently not completely accurate and more accurate translation would be "milk-sibling." And if you're not sure what milk-siblings are, they are children who share a bond of being fed by the same wet nurse. When watchin the episode I was thinking about the relationships between the characters and the concept of them being foster siblings felt a little odd. I don't know if milk-siblings is any better, but it definitely fits the vibe of the show better imo.

Nossso

Xiao means “small” or “little” So little mao :)

What Maomao was saying wasn't that Lishu was considered a threat or could be a threat when she grew older, but that because the emperor didn't "visit" her at all she wasn't fulfilling her purpose for being there, and she could be targeted by someone who wanted to preserve Ah-Duo's position by creating a vancancy for that reason as perhaps the "unneeded" one among the concubines or maybe as a matter of honor
