The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride - FULL REACTION

This was well worth the watch! So many people have been asking me to see this and I finally understand why. The first one will always hold a special place in my heart but I loved the direction this went in with the whole 'Romeo + Juliet' thing. Enjoy :)

The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride - FULL REACTION

Comments

Lion King was based on Hamlet by Shakespeare so Lion King 2 was based on Romeo and Juliet

Ashley Johnson

Fun fact: While it is common for many lion prides to have one male, it is also not unheard of for unrelated males to form a coalition and work together to create a larger and stronger pride that way. These coalitions can have anywhere from 2-4 male lions and many lionesses. This is basically what Mufasa and Scar did originally when they were adolescents.

Kelsi Yamashita

Love how this movie shows just how malnourished Simba was in the first movie after a diet of bugs for who knows how many years. With an actual leonine meal plan he's gotten absolutely huge.

Henri

I love the art of the original Rescuers - the backgrounds look like they're all oil paintings! Down Under feels like a TV show compared to that.

Brian Nix

I would really recommend watching The Lion King 1 1/2. It's basically a re-telling of the Lion King from Timon and Pumba's point of view, and it's a lot of fun!

Dani

Another really good sequel is Aladdin 3. I think it’s called the king of thieves or something like that. Amazing movie with a lot of action and arguably a better storyline than the first one

EK_49

I'm pretty sure the direct to video sequels where the movies new animators were being trained on when brought over to walt disney studios, hence the less quality as they are essentially 'student films'.

Lexi Rasmussen

A "pride made entirely of males", you say? Sign me up for this gay pride.

Lawson Lim

Will you react to Princess and the frog by any chance?:) I think you'd like it!

Elvira

Cheetahs have it hard in the wild, yes you’re the fastest land animal in the world but that about it, hell, in zoos they have their own emotional support dogs in the enclosure with them.

Sarah Marion

So the first Lion King is like Hamlet while this one’s like Romeo and Juliet… idk if anyone noticed that

Sarah Marion

I also have to agree about the rescuers down under. That one was my favorite of the two. Plus, how could they go wrong with John Candy?? Come on! :D

Raquel

One of the reason the Zira death scene look so stiff, beside the lower animation quality, was because she originally let go on her own since she rather die than accept Kira's help. They took that out and made it look like she lost her grip instead.

Michael

She didn't say anything in the film. but it was rumored that she was supposed to, and they just didn't think it made sense for her to, so they cut it. I believe that they included a deleted scene in the newer Blu-ray releases where you can see some rough footage of that scene, where she actually does say something like "I'll never let it go", before she takes a final swipe at Kiara.

Raquel

It's actually been confirmed, by books released back in the 90s, and some Disney folks back then too, that Kovu is indeed a stolen lion cub from another pride. However, it was not made clear what the fate of Kovu's real family was. Perhaps Scar and Zira killed them and took Kovu in. Kovu was believed to be too young to remember what actually happened. The story was that Scar became desperate for an heir of his own, but he was dissatisfied with Nuka, his actual blood son, sired from Zira. Scar found him weak and quite useless. Also, it was, in fact, confirmed that Scar is in no way actually related to Mufasa. Scar lost his pride, and fled with Mufasa when they were teenagers (I mean the lion equivalent to teens of course). I really wish Disney would go more into detail, because the books paint quite a vivid and wonderfully deep picture about these stories. But, sadly, they are only interested in marketability and profits these days. Hence all the crappy live action versions. If you look around enough online, you will find all these stories, plus more! there's a fantastic fan comic (if it's still available that is) on Deviantart. I believe it's simply called The Lion King. But, it's been so long that I don't remember exactly what the name of it was. That goes even further into these stories, and chronicles other characters from this series, and follows new characters as well. I couldn't stop reading it! I think it had like 50 volumes or more! Those books I mentioned, however, are impossible to find in print form, unless you want to pay like $1,000 per copy. I think some pirates have posted the pages somewhere though.

Raquel

Not to mention that as soon as they took over Disney when he died, they were not so interested in creativity and high quality story telling. They wanted marketability and profits instead. :/

Raquel

Nice! I had forgotten how much I loved these (even though now they seem a bit silly to me lol). BTW I remembered another good flick to watch: The Glass House, this one is kinda scary and creepy, and a little sad too, but it's very well done. Just a fair warning to be prepared for strong and disturbing subject matter if you watch this one. thanks as always, Oscar! You're so much fun to watch! (also did you cut your hair? looks great!) <3

Raquel

I might be wrong, but is the Kiara and Zira scene changed? I could have sworn there was an alternative version where Zira says something before she falls. It's been ages since I seen it though, I had the VHS when that was still a thing

Moviemuncher

The sequels are a mixed bag though several have good stories or characters (new and old) which make them worthwhile. The animation is definitely a lower quality at the time they began the trend of "straight to video" films which did not get cinema releases. Hope you found something to enjoy in this one i think Zara is a great villain immensly evil but believable some people cannot let go of hatred and it becomes their whole identity. I recommend Aladdin 2 and 3 good stories and excellent character moments. Little mermaid 2 is alright as well.

James McCarthy

While I agree that sequels tend to be worse than the original, I have to disagree with you about The Rescuers Down Under. I actually think the film improves upon every aspect of the original. The original Rescuers was made during Disney's so called Bronze Age (aka Dark Age) when the studio was making films of noticeably lower quality. The animation of Rescuers Down Under was more dynamic and vibrant compared to the original, it took place in a much more immersive and exciting setting, the adventure was more immersive and fun, and the characters were just as endearing as ever. I understand Walt Disney's trepidation when it came to sequels, but if done with care and passion, a sequel can live up to and sometimes exceed the original.

Cody

Walt Disney (who died in 1966) was famously against sequels, saying they stifled creativity, and preferring quality over quantity. For a while even after his death, this stayed as the company line. Then Michael Eisner became CEO of Disney in the mid-80s, after Walt's son-in-law was ousted. Eisner did preside over the Renaissance, but he also introduced cheap direct-to-video sequels to just about every Disney animated classic film. (Most are of the same lower quality as the TV animated show spinoffs which also came out at this time!) As well as the first theatrical sequel, The Rescuers : Down Under, which is pretty good - but still of noticeably lower quality than the original!

Brian Nix

Kovu was originally supposed to be Scar's son, which makes sense because all lions in an area would be closely related. But of course that would make the cubs cousins (realistically), and Disney execs made them change it (or at least leave it vague I guess?)

Brian Nix

That too, and very awful ones 👎🏻👎🏻

Francisco Alvarado

I love this movie, and not just because my name is Kiara 😂

Kiara Rodriguez

This was such a nice surprise! I’ve always loved the second Lion King and Kovu’s character. Another great direct-to-DVD Disney sequel from around this time (that actually surpasses the original in terms of production quality) is Bambi 2. It’s a really heartwarming story, as well.

Reagan Conley

🎶 deception, disgraaace 🎶 the soundtrack of this one is 🔥

Kitty Underwood

Maybe he had a conflict, or maybe he didn’t want to come back? I don’t know.

Teej

As far as im aware the only voice actor that was replaced was zazu

Liam

I like this movie a lot actually, obviously isn't getting close to the original but it's still such a good sequel! The third movie is really fun too if you want to watch it. It gives more insight on timon's and pumba's past and shows the events from the first movie fron their perspective

Maike_Staytiny

Idk why, though? Rowan Atkinson is alive and well

Diana Woods

The original was based on Hamlet and you were right! This was Romeo and Juliet (sort of)

Diana Woods

Beard looks fantastic man!

Diana Woods

Respectfully, you're looking sharp mate! 👌

Bungus Fungus

Crossing my fingers for A Goofy Movie someday! It's my #1 favorite Disney movie, easily.

Rhetorical Thrill

and, of course, remakes...☹

Jim Schmitz

oh hell yes i cant whait for dis one !!! day 53: of suggesting (my girl 1991)

Emilie Fredriksen

By the way, answering your question about why Disney made sequels of its old movies with lower budgets it's because inside the company they thought they couldn't replicate the same success their original counterparts had and thus they'd lose a lot of money putting the same effort. Releasing sequels straight to video at that time was a much safer way to maximize revenue by cutting costs at a minimum and since they knew people would buy them because everyone was already familiar with the original films and characters, it was a huge lucrative business for them. It was only in recent years that they realized they can make even more money by producing sequels with the same effort as the originals and so now we have a lot of them in theaters everywhere

Francisco Alvarado

Just saw the thumbnail and instantly 'in upendi' is running in my head 🥳

Astoria

In my mind he is just McGee from NCIS 🤣

Astoria

Also I highly recommend Guardians of Ga'Hoole, Megamind, The Road to El Dorado, Joseph King of Dreams, and Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas!

Fireflye97

This movie is pretty good - and like some have said it's a direct to home video sequel (and Disney did a LOT of those). From what I understood it was just a quicker and budget friendly way to make sequels without putting too much money into them - which didn't necessarily make them bad, just not the best quality.

Fireflye97

And Liz Callaway singing!!! Same actress who sings for Anastasia!

Teej

I knew that Kovu was Thackery Binx from Hocus Pocus. I heard it and I just knew.

Teej

yes, female lions are faster, one of the reason they do the hunting

PumpkinPanic

I didn’t think about this until now as I’m watching it, but it’s interesting that the first film is based off of Hamlet. This one is based off of Romeo and Juliet.

Teej

To answer your question about voice actors… a lot of the actors are the same such as Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Robert Guillaume, Moira Kelly, James Earl Jones (RIP). I think the only one who is different is the actor who voiced Zazu.

Teej

Nice choice, didn't expect you'd react to it at all. Also a fun fact, this was released direct-to-video so it's crazy that such a movie has this good quality when this type of films tend to be the complete opposite

Francisco Alvarado

This is a nice surprise for a movie reaction. Worthy sequel to a Disney classic.

Alexander Berry

Road to El Dorado is such an underrated gem!!!

Teej

I personally like this one's story more than the first, but hey, its Romeo + Juliet vs Hamlet. Also, have you seen A Goofy Movie? To your question about all the sequels, yes, vast majority of them are considered cash grabs since they were direct-to-DVD movies as in they were not given a theatrical release. Some were even meant to serve as a tv pilot for the TV series. Examples would be Aladdin 2 and Atlantis 2, but big difference is that Aladdin actually got the tv series and even had the third movie to finish the story. The other sequel I recommend is actually Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time. You do not need to watch 2 since it is more like three side stories made into one movie, although the third story is a fan favorite.

Michael

Agreed. He Lives In You is my favorite. It’s originally from the musical, but I’m glad they found a way to fit it into this film.

Teej

If you're still in an animation mood, I so recommend a few more Dreamworks movies like Road to El Dorado, Megamind, or Sinbad Legend of the Seven Seas! The soundtrack/music from El Dorado really holds a special place in my heart, similar to Spirit and Prince of Egypt. Just so much fun! I know any of these would make great reactions 😍

Anna H

Oh, I’ve seen it, for sure. I still have the Disney vhs. 😆 I just haven’t seen it in a very long time.

Teej

I also love the song He Lives In You. It is from the musical of The Lion King (1997) and I’m glad they decided to add it to this movie. It’s a powerful song that very much encapsulates The Lion King for me, other than Circle of Life.

Teej

I knew it! I knew!! I knew deep down in my gut I knew you were gonna make a reaction. I love it!!! 😍

Carven Ridge

It so amazing. It's one of my sister favorite Disney movies. You'll enjoy it.

Shané Kummer

Perfect timing. I had root canal done early this morning. All I could think was Nemo. Lol 🤣 I'm so happy you had time to watch. I saw this in other country. I cousin in Canada and we together. Best memories with this film. I wish everyone the best. Including you, Aussie. ☺️

Shané Kummer

This is a great sequel! I know this is off topic, but I hope you will do a reaction to the new wicked movie too!

Brandy

I haven’t seen this movie in the longest time!!! My sister and I had the original Lion King movie and this one. Can’t wait to watch this tonight!

Teej

The lion king is my favourite disney films and this sequel is probably one of the best disney sequels ever the songs in this are so good

Liam

Yes omg I love this one!! You have to watch the lion king 1½ as well it’s so funny
