OpenForge does OpenLOCK

This is an experiment in OpenForge supporting the OpenLOCK system. We've been in discussions with Printable Scenery , and we heartily support this open standard for locking tiles.  We have no plans to stop producing the tiles we've always produced, but given the ability for OpenForge to handle different bases for different uses, supporting OpenLOCK just clicked into place. (See what I did there?)

We've produced OpenLOCK bases that enable you to use any existing internal tile design with the system.  We've also gone all in on supporting the basic set of wallsfloors and half floors

Currently, this system seems to do a great job of usurping the need to do construction kits, but this is where you come in.  Tell us what you think about OpenForge and OpenLOCK.  Should we chase this down and make a full set?  Would you prefer we stick with what we've done before?  Tell us below in the comments!

I'm fairly sure I can make that work for the floor tiles, which might be enough. Still gotta think how to do it with the walls

I like the detachable wall idea, it seems flexible. However the speed of magnets is amazing! In a perfect world for me the best system would be detachable walls with magnets in them too. Then everything would be so fast and flexible at the same time. Not sure if it is feasible... but your the expert.

Yeah, I've been considering doing just that, just I only really have a way to do it for wall bases. I could add the holes on walls, but then a person would have to glue something over that hole to hold the magnet in. I can start off with the bases at very least.

I just printed 6 of these bases and a few clips, and they seem very sturdy and easy to use. I noticed there seems to be enough room around the clip holes to model a spot for magnets. Any chance of creating a base that combines the clip and magnets? It would be great to have the magnets for quickly setting up or changing rooms, then the clips for sturdier or multi floor dungeons.

I totally hear you. The good news here is that the wall and tile side is just a hole, so it's fairly robust. The clips I print in batches of 16, so if some break, not a big deal. Other clipping systems have posts or thin walls that are part of it so I think will be more susceptible to breakage. That being said, I fully intend to keep producing the magnetic system, and supporting any other system that will fit inside my bases, and that I'm not prevented from implementing.

I like the idea of needing a whole lot less different kind of tiles to print, but i'm not that convinced about the connection system. In my experience those things tend to break, which makes using them a bit frustrating.

I think you're probably right to just use the OF/OL clip base. That saves a lot of trouble. Thanks for working to make them compatible!

Nice work, The tiles look great ! I'm printing some now.

The EB floor tile does exactly this. Use the EB floor tile and an A wall. The one problem with doing this is you basically need a different floor tile for every layout. If what you really want is just the clip system, I would recommend considering using the normal tiles on top of the OpenForge OpenLOCK clip bases. That being said, I can bang out a floor that works for corners too like the EB does for walls if you want.

I love this. I am a backer of OpenLock as well, and I like the system. When the creator asked me for feeback I mentioned working to make sure its compatible with OpenForge, so I'm happy to see that the two systems will be interchangable. My only concern about OpenLock is that I prefer tiles with the walls flush with the edges (i.e. OpenForge "classic" series vs "edge" series) so I hope that OpenLock can be supportive of that style too. Is it possible to maybe make OF floor tiles that are slightly chopped off on the ends, so we can attack the OpenLock walls to them, and still have walls that are flush with the tile, rather than sticking off the ends?

Matthew Meyer

Love this thanks a lot! Going to print and try this weekend. I was holding off on printing bases, but I think this is the solution I was looking for.
