it's both. we are just as much machine and they are just as much human. i truly do believe every creature to have as big a "soul" as the next. their context for understanding and world and everything in it is just different than ours. it doesn't need to make it alien or unintelligible to us; everything communicates, you just need to take the time to learn what it is they are saying, and how to respond. which like, a lot of people get to some degree, but then they forget that it is another living creature with sentience and they get upset when it exerts that sentience in a way that doesn't line up with what they want, like it's some kind of object or tool. i think we could all stand to actively be more empathetic towards bugs and small creatures. it makes me happy to see you doing so. sorry for your loss. i'm sure you made its life with you comfortable.
