Kurapika's eyes were explained on the previous episode, when he said he's using lenses so people don't see his eyes change colour. The anime does show it so the audience has that emotional "oh, Kurapika's losing it" but the other characters do indeed not see it.

2025-12-30 10:01:26 +0000 UTCI knew you would start to get it after episode 44. I feel like the turning point for me on my first watch was the Uvo fight against the Shadow Beasts. Specifically, when Uvo takes a chunk off of Leech's head, it was like I was slapped in the face, like I was fooled about the entirety of what the show is supposed to be. That's when I had my "aha" moment. Togashi, the mangaka, doesn't just want to write a cool shonen story. He wants the reader/viewer to have as much fun as possible while subverting expectations to the maximum, as if we're meant to twist ourselves around and into his world at the same time.
