Words are hard

Okay so while recording last night, it became very clear that I cannot say Sisyphus. Like, I just can't. It comes out as Sissy Fuhs and it sounds ridiculous and Amy and Lia teased me. I remember I had a friend in college who COULD NOT say the word specific. She would always say Pacific and it was actually kind of cute.

Are there any words you cannot say? Please don't make me feel alone, haha.

When I first moved to Los Angeles I amused people greatly with my pronunciation of Sepulveda and Cahuenga. The former I mastered quickly, but I still stumble over the latter. (Thank goodness I donโ€™t live on the west side!)

My husband calls tuna "chu-nah" with his Aussie accent...and ppl will invariably say "chicken?"

If you go to Instagram and search Graham Norton, they posted a video of Benedict Cumberbatch doing a sound over in a documentary. He attempts to say penguin multiple times and itโ€™s hysterical. Also, I never pronounce his last name correctly.๐Ÿ™„

Omnipotent, Non-Sequitur, and Trois (the number 3 in French). I donโ€™t have a problem with pronouncing them if the words come up in conversation, but if I see them in writing, I doubt myself and say: omni POE tent, non-se COY tur, and troy. I can usually avoid the first two, but I buy cheap wine, with Menage a Trois being my favorite, and more than once Iโ€™ve pronounced it wrong โ€“ even right now when re-reading what I typed I thought โ€œMenage a Troyโ€! ๐Ÿ˜’

A word I canโ€™t say in any accent is โ€œanatomicallyโ€ - I have to say it super slowly to get it right otherwise my brain goes โ€œanatomyโ€ and tries to add โ€œcallyโ€ on the end of it. And Iโ€™m teaching how to make crochet stuffed toys at the moment so Iโ€™ve used it quite a lot ๐Ÿ˜‚

So when I travel in the States people donโ€™t understand my British accent specifically on the word โ€œwaterโ€ which as a Brit, I say โ€œWar-Tuhโ€ so then I have to Americanise the pronunciation and say โ€œWar-derrrrrโ€ but then I feel like a dick, cos it sounds like Iโ€™m taking the piss with a very bad impression of a US accentโ€ฆ. But it usually means I get Water. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Cacophony as kack-uh-foh-nee, I still hear it this way in my head when I read it even though now I know!! And if I were to say it out loud, I'd definitely need a second to remember the correct pronunciation.

2 words that I had only read and not ever heard pronounced when in my 20s.....awry......vicar. So I used to say ahww- ree, instead of ah- rye, and the first time I tried to say vicar, I said vye- car instead of vih- cahr. Felt dumb for sure to hear the right pronunciation. Also, even now when I read the word Thai, I sometimes say in my head thigh๐Ÿ˜œ

I went to grad school in the UK and was constantly made fun of for my American accent. I had a hard time pronouncing Edinburgh, though I think I've somewhat got it at last :p

Ominous. It ain't Oh-MINUS. In highschool, we had to read out loud in English and while reading Jane Eyre I hit the word lachrymose. I paused, hoping that my teacher would fill in as she sometimes did for me. She didn't. So I jumped in and went with larch-EE-mouse. "Thank you," she said, "I knew you couldn't do it, but just wanted to hear what you'd say."
