Team Nessassity and Princessity News - Cancelling The End Of All Things, I'm Back!
Added 2024-09-03 20:02:50 +0000 UTCIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT'S... not August anymore and um... I guess this also isn't a Monthly Mod Report!
So that's a good start already...
Okay so, if you're wondering what happened to the MMR I teased last month, the short version is... Princess computer kaputt, Princess panic, Princess replaces computer, no work done, sadness >.<
✧ The Long Version
As for the long version... if you're on our Discord, you may have seen my announcement slightly over a week ago, when I realised just how bad it was. In truth, I had started experiencing trouble at least a few weeks prior, but I chose to ignore the warning signs and coped that it was something temporary or software-related, but soon after... I got proven very, very wrong.
It got to a point where doing anything remotely resource-intensive (in some instances, even launching a few browser tabs in quick succession counted) would result in long delays, freezes and even bluescreens.
Naturally, as hardware-illiterate as I am, my first thought was "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I'M DOOMED IT'S OVER EVERYTHING IS BORKED HELP AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!1111234"
But after consulting with much smarter people, and receiving some much-needed tech support from our community members (extra-special thanks to Burnsidhe for helping me somewhat rationalise what was going on >.<) I managed to narrow down the likely culprit to either the memory sticks, the mamaboard or the antique HDD I'd entrusted all my data to...
To be honest, given the age of that PC and how much intense activity I'd put it through over the years, it could be all three failing at once and it probably wouldn't have been too surprising. I'd built it some ~6 years ago, and admittedly used some cheap components in the build. It was my first ever manual PC assembly, so I also had to buy a monitor, OS, all kinds of extra stuff... it got really expensive so I had to compromise on a few things. I had originally intended to replace the budget parts over time, but because all was working fine for so long, I didn't feel any impetus to upgrade and just... let myself become complacent.
So, after some introspection, I decided that maybe... I shouldn't settle for half-measures this time. In the end, I decided to go ahead and build a completely new PC from scratch, and this time I took the time to educate myself and even spoke to a nice tech support person at the store and let him change my order as necessary and assemble the thing for me to make sure that a responsible adult tested it before it got to me.
The final price ended up ballooning to nearly twice my original order, but the demure, mindful and fiscally responsible genius that I am...

...okay fine, it hurt a bit but... I... think it's going to be worth it.
I'll treat it as an investment into the future. After all, starting next year, I will be dedicating myself to full-time game development. Having a machine that can handle that and (hopefully) not suddenly kick the bucket again while I'm right in the thick of it is probably something I should have thought of anyway, without waiting for disaster to finally push me into action >_<
Ahem... anyways, I guess the moral of the whole story is "don't trust technology to last forever, especially if you don't know what you're doing".
So... after ALL OF THAT stressful mess, the shiny new PC finally arrived to me just before the weekend, and I have been trying to bring my workspace to... some semblance of familiarity ever since.
The good news is, I managed to save all my data! So no progress on mods or other things has been lost! <3
There's no bad news so far, but I guess the slight flipside is that I couldn't keep my old registry and installed apps, because I've decided to replace what was previously two separate drives with one big one, so none of the addresses would carry over (and I really didn't want to partition it for such a lazy reason) soooo... I'm still in the middle of redownloading, reinstalling and customising a lot of things. It's exhausting, and I'm fighting 6 years of muscle memory, but on the bright side, at least I get to go over my checklist and occasionally go "wait... do I really need that?"
✧ So, where does that leave us?
Because all of this went down just as I was supposed to work on my EoS pet-project, and progress on it was supposed to be the topic of August's MMR... it looks like my plans will require some adjustment.
I don't know how it will affect the Year of Finishing Things in the long term, but hopefully I can get back on my feet soon and make up for the delay with a few extra sleepless nights. In the best case scenario, because the new PC is SO MUCH faster and fresher and cleaner all around, perhaps my workflow will be as well. I imagine being able to get through all the loading screens and dig through folders more smoothly will make the entire process more pleasant, and I can work on mods without it being such a time-consuming undertaking every time!

But that's enough ado for one... not-MMR! I need to stop yapping and actually get back to setting up the new workstation. I won't jinx it again by teasing the next MMR or when it might happen, but I tentatively hope I can make up for lost time in September, and we can get back on track soon as if nothing ever happened! >.<
In the meantime, thank you so much for your continued support <3 and especially thank you everyone who's helped me deal with this crisis and given me so much reassurance and useful advice. If I'd had to work through this alone, chances are, I would be trying to figure it out to this day ._. I love this little community so much I have no words <3 <3 <3 ,3<# <3 #<# <,3
