The secret to making time for games
Added 2024-07-23 05:19:49 +0000 UTC
This week, The Resties went into the deepest, darkest corners of the video game wilderness and returned to camp with not one, but two freshly plucked indie delights.
First, we have the WW1 survival-horror throwback Conscript. And second, the inventive, death-by-jump metroidbrania Leap Year.
Is that not enough to sate your appetite? In the back half of the episode, Frushtick and Plante share their secrets to making time for games -- no matter your age.

loved the Des Moines shout-out! I live in Des Moines and tragically, we do not have video games in our library available for checkout, but they have a huge collection of board games to check out. they also have a ton of events where they set up consoles and people can come play games for free. :)

2024-08-15 12:40:45 +0000 UTCI'm curious to know if Plante has a template for that time tracking spreadsheet, because I would love to try it out, but my first thought was "do you record the time spent recording your time?"

2024-07-30 03:56:24 +0000 UTCSo I just played Planet of Lana. How Long To Beat says it's about 4 hours. I'd love it if you guys could give it a go because it was really really good. It's on Game Pass and imagine Limbo, but not creepy but instead sci-fi and distinctly French. It's beautiful to look at, and the soundtrack is simply amazing. You don't want to miss this game!

2024-07-28 01:57:35 +0000 UTCjust started Leap Year and hoooooooboy this is the sort of puzzle platforming I can get into. I loved Animal Well but struggled because I suck at platforming but Leap Year feels like it’s more about the puzzles than the jumps and such.

2024-07-27 21:37:28 +0000 UTCLove the episode and wanted to add some thoughts on time. Mom of 3 with a full time job. For any parents I highly recommend the book “Fair Play” - or even just a review of recent research about what happens to women’s time after kids and marriage. Not sure how many moms we have here but you simply must reclaim your leisure time for your sanity and your families sanity. For me that means (among other things) prioritizing game time every day even if it’s just 30 minutes. I have gotten through many large RPGs just chipping away slowly this way. And I agree with tips others have given - shorter games, games that are easily put down, or playing on story mode to avoid time repeating bosses over and over really helps. Once the kids get older - a beautiful thing happens. They get into their own games. Be open to these games!! It is so easy to write off Roblox or Fortnite or whatever the fuck they are playing. They like these because all their friends are playing and it’s easy to see them as not real games or not your style - but try them. Being willing to be influenced by my kids has shown me so many things I never would have experienced AND it’s a two for one in terms of time because you are spending quality time with them at the same time and they just relish it so much.

2024-07-27 00:38:58 +0000 UTCSo glad to hear you guys mention the library for games! It’s also good to note that a lot of libraries are also getting a “library of things,” where you can even borrow some older consoles

2024-07-26 17:39:33 +0000 UTCI just finished my first full completion of Elden Ring, I put it off for almost a year to find time, but I ended up doing the same thing - sit down for an hour or so, plug away at it, and eventually find my way through to an ending.

2024-07-25 23:23:44 +0000 UTCThank you so much for having a discussion about finding time for games. As we prepare for the birth of our first child, I still want to find time for this part of my life, especially since I plan to share it with the kid too (which y’all’s experience with has also helped me prepare).

2024-07-25 12:50:24 +0000 UTCThe discussion around visual clarity reminded me of Screencheat, a wonderful multiplayer FPS where every player is invisible but you can only play in split screen. That means the only way to find your enemies is to look at your opponents’ screens. The game is great, and the level design uses bold, vibrant colors to communicate different parts of the map. So you can see where your opponents generally are at a glance, helping you identify who you should focus on. It’s a wonderful way to show how visual clarity can improve a game.

2024-07-24 21:51:54 +0000 UTCMy most memorable movie experience ever was actually Twister. My family went to see it at a drive in theatre, and as the movie progressed a really strong storm started moving into the area. By the time the credits rolled it was a downpour with actual tornadoes having hit that night. That was a once in a lifetime immersive movie experience.

2024-07-24 15:36:12 +0000 UTCWould love to hear you all talk about Dungeons of Hinterberg. It’s world navigation, Zelda-like puzzles, fun combat, and relationships had me thinking “this is what pokemon SHOULD feel like in 2024”

2024-07-24 14:51:33 +0000 UTCAs for finding time for gaming as a parent of young children I also have found that my gaming tastes have changed. As a younger person I played lots of 60+ hour games. Now as a father of 2 both under 2 yrs old I find myself gravitating towards shorter games. I also find myself really liking games that are easy to put down or have lower skill ceilings have made get more out or my limited game time.

2024-07-24 09:03:00 +0000 UTCThe inclusion of Dante’s Peak has me retroactively doubting every Honorable Mention ever 😆 I watched that movie (very much against my will) on an 8th grade bus trip to DC. I had zero exposure to scary/gory movies at that point and being trapped on that bus with the sound blaring as Grandma dissolved in the acid lake was… an experience. (I’m sure I imagined much more gore than the movie actually depicts.)

2024-07-23 21:13:24 +0000 UTCThere’s been a lot of wild takes to come out of this show but I think “children are the target audience for candy” might take the cake 😂. I don’t know that I even disagree or if I did that I have the logic to refute it but just hearing it felt so jarring 😂

2024-07-23 16:34:19 +0000 UTCThe way I make time for video games (as someone with a full time job) is just taking it slow! I may only get in an hour or two a night, on the nights I even have time to play at all, but I just keep at it. For instance it took me several several months to make it through Elden Ring, but honestly I think I appreciated it more that way. I’ve seen a lot of people burn out on big games and it’s a great way to avoid that :)

2024-07-23 15:44:04 +0000 UTCHearing you guys talk so much about hand held emulators... I'd love to hear a resties where you chat with Russ from RetroGameCorp about emulation, favorite romhacks, handhelds, etc. fav system to emulate

2024-07-23 14:26:29 +0000 UTCHere's my secret, as a guy who has a family and a full time job... Take a PTO day, or 2, on release day or close to it. There is no way I'm orienting myself to a FF7 Rebirth or Xenoblade without giving it that huge upfront investment of playing it all day, or at least until my kid is done school. Then as I feel I'm getting toward the end, I might even take another day. It feels indulgent to take a personal day all to myself, just to play games, but it's like a mental health day. And I've found my ability to enjoy the large RPGd that I like almost complete hinges on giving them this runway.

2024-07-23 14:00:47 +0000 UTCFunny that you guys brought up both Twister and Dante's Peak. The screenplay for Twister was written by Michael Crichton and his then-wife, Anne-Marie Martin. Crichton died of cancer in 2008, and a new posthumous novel, Eruption, was released last month. He had started working on it while he was writing Jurassic Park in the late 80's, and continued to research the subject and iron out the story over the years. The novel was completed by James Patterson at the request of Sherri Crichton, Michael's widow. It is, as you might have guessed, about a volcanic eruption, so very much Dante's Peak by way of Michael Crichton. I really enjoyed it, especially because it feels very much like it's written in Crichton's voice. Unsurprisingly, the main character is divorced, and if you look at all of those other 90's movies and novels that had Crichton's fingerprints on them, it's fair to argue that he was a pretty big influence on the "everything is about divorce" media trope at the time. He himself divorced four times in his life, so there MIGHT be some sort of link there.

2024-07-23 05:23:54 +0000 UTCYesssssssss! I was hoping you'd check out Leap Year. Hype. Also, started 1000xResist tonight and my oh my. I'm completely mesmerized by it already. It has sucked me in to its philosophical, affecting sci-fi world and story. Feels special.
