Vegas Vacation is underrated, especially "I just didn't know you could hit those notes...."

Bret

Zzzzzz....

Marko Mancic

She’s a doll. Long live the NL Vacation franchise (at least the first three)!

chad mulchin

1) During her interview on Late Night with David Letterman (August 11th, 1986), actress, singer, & comedienne Beverly D’Angelo A) wears a frizzy blonde hairdo swept off its haunches by a hot desert wind B) displays the quick, punchy timing of a scrawny cornered gangster C) covers The Rolling Stones on concertina, or D) sneezes on a candelabra from the séance kit that she keeps in her purse 2) D’Angelo enters Late Night from the green room. In Latin (Javanese, and Kurdish) “green room” means A) Land of Giant Vegetables B) Holographic jungle enclosure C) The “Whites Only” section of a gay bar, or D) subterranean cannabis plantation 3) Crossing the stage, D’Angelo’s A) entrance beckons the broad, sheepish glamour of a grown-up Prom Queen B) hips swivel like a seasoned catwalker leading up to the moment when she plants a tangy kiss on Letterman’s canned cornfed cheek C) applause quotient duplicates the sound of the perfect rain falling on a road designed for overcoming insomnia D) marriage to Duke Lorenzo is put to the test 4) As Miss Ponderosa Steakhouse (1973), Beverly D’Angelo A) toured India with bodyguards and a portable trap door B) protested the human condition C) played the part of a Bond girl starving on top of the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Plaza D) was cursed to raise two normal children 5) Awash in praise, the gobsmacked D’Angelo plunks down in Late Night’s guest chair and mouths “__________” to a throng of soused clergymen. A) Stop it B) Shoot me C) Do me E) I can’t breathe

I don't know what this podcast is about but I just started it and Bruce Wagner's voice is the exact opposite of the last guy I don't even know what's going to happen but I like it and I know I'm going to like it because the guy isn't annoying he has a smooth deep voice praise Jesus.

Erick

It only makes sense that those complaining about this episode were born after 9/11

Brent L. Smith

I did not realise that was her. Cinemas finest moment ?

Lionel

How could she not discuss the European Vacation scene - a fond memory for all Gen X men (and indeed the only reason I know who she is) 🎥🚿🧖‍♀️

Keith campbell

Highly entertaining. Bev sure has some tales.

Alec K. Redfearn

What are you haters going on about? This woman has lived a LIFE and can spin a great yarn. Can't wait to hear more. Bring on part 2!

Rob Bailey

I could listen to her tell stories all day

Phoenix

Do you think Beverly was buying Dan Aykroyd’s house whilst he was helping Colleen with Travolta’s party?

Dan Palmer

Much better than the Wasson episode, but that was an admittedly low bar. Raining names only works when they are integral parts of larger stories. Beverly gets that better than Coleen, but only marginally. Some of these guests have been a slog to get through and I’ve been a listener since the Podcast One days. These last two are the only episodes where I’ve thrown in the towel. I agree with the comments above about the show working better with long Bret monologues on a bi-weekly basis. Pretty sure that’s what drew us all here in the first place.

KCDC

I agree as well.

K.D.F.

Listened to Britney’s new book instead… not that I was excited about it or anything, but it is far and away better than this… thing.

Russell Reese

The podcast started on the unsustainable high of a Chevy Chase cameo…

Lionel

I like Bruce and I like Beverly but Jesus what boring topics.

Knokkel knokkel

Enjoyed that, expands on many of the themes Bret touches on every week - old LA, fame, money, the industry etc

GC

plus one woman

Poetical Gore

This was fine. Yes Bret would have been better, but this was cool, enjoyed it. I feel like we all showed up to class only to find out Bret left a sub and while they followed his guidance, they just couldn’t be Bret. Only Bret can be Bret

Kerry

So many whining men in the comments 😂

Ashley

Todd should have taken over the podcast in Bret’s absence to read from his novella. My 2 cents.

Patrick

Bruce is fine, I guess, but I still bailed 10 minutes in. This would be ten-hold easier to tolerate if we weren’t paying for it.

Alex Dermer

Excellent episode. Much better than last week. Beverly exudes a classic sense of Hollywood. From Ronnie the Hawk to the classic Neil Jordan story in the Hollywood Hills with the new baby/ BMW. Can’t wait for next week!

Dustin

I actually loved this though and can't wait for part 2. Realized she's the mom in national lampoon's family vacation... an icon.

Alex Nelson

Shocked by the hate on here. Bruce may not be the best host. But Beverly D'Angelo has always been fascinating as hell. I can't criticize the woman from COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER and who voiced Lurleen Lumpkin and also somehow tolerated working with Chevy Chase in four films

MisterBlasty

Appreciate the effort but these guest host episodes could not keep me engaged.

James Bandy

They probably won't cancel your patreon membership for being stupid in the comments. Unfortunately that means the rest of us will be subjected to your stupidity for a while yet.

NLJZ

Life can also be in a rut. While I get the podcast is not what it was, the way I see it is the subscription is to BEE, not BEEP. Sometimes he is entertaining, sometimes not. Like being in a long term relationship with someone. I am looking forward to his Proust review (hopefully it won't be 'I loved it but I don't feel like talking about it') and any gem he has to offer. In the meantime, patience. Again, I get what you are saying (and people are paying expecting something). But people and things sometimes change. For better or for worse. I find it very moving that he laments about the finity of life and how things are slowly declining (this keeps coming up more and more) and compared to this nothing really matters. This is very sad and emotional. He feels very authentic.

Sértő-Radics Sarolta

Glad Bev has a nice house. Yawn. I’m out. I might look for the Vacation shower scene?

Steven Mills

I agree with some of the points listed above that the show is in a rut. The weekly format definitely doesn't work as well as the bi-weekly 3 hr epics. The monologues were always by far the best part of the show and the shows with just an interview really don't distinguish themselves from any other podcast like the classic bi-weekly with the monologue did. Those clearly had superior effort and conciseness than the ones now do. The biggest problem is that Bret has gotten less interesting. His social criticism used to be very unique to him and was really interesting to hear, but something broke during the pandemic and now he just parrots Fox News. I've always disagreed with Bret's griping about film, but always really enjoyed his in depth movie reviews and how he dissected them. I'm always interested in discovering old films but those reviews just fall flat for me, they just don't have the urgency and have an inherent stuffiness and boringness because the implication of Bret even giving the review is that he can't be bothered to have any interest in a new movie, even though it's looking like a bit of a comeback year for the cinema and the public's interest in it. In short, the podcast just isn't going anywhere

Alex Waller

Oh god damn it not again

Harold B

I was cautiously optimistic about this, because as Bruce started it was evident he'd done at least some preparation. But then his first question is about...her house? And he lets her ramble for god knows how long about nothing anyone in their right mind could give a fuck about. I've listened to every single episode for the past 10 years and this has been such a fail. And it happens in the context of a really frustrating downward trend in the show's quality, obviously coming as a consequence of their needless obligation to produce an episode every week. Go back to making episodes more infrequently. When it's worth your time, and my time. Enough of these episodes every week where I listen to Bret lament for a half hour about how he doesn't like movies anymore. So talk about something you ARE interested. And if you're interested in nothing, then you shouldn't be recording an episode. And please, for the love of god, less Adam. Adam, dude, you can start a show. You'll have listeners. But since this is Bret's show I'm tuning in for, it's really irritating and unbecoming of a producer to constantly insert himself into the conversation. With all due respect, because Adam you've been a great _producer_ all these years. Producer—not cohost.

Dave

Made it to the 5 minute mark

Jim Seem

Bret can stay on vacation. These are great

Richard Raymond

Immaculate rack. Cancel me.

.

Bingo, and Adam would keep the spirit of the podcast alive

Moz

I agree completely.

Peter Guzzo

Marginally better than last week but still bad. I really think Adam hosting for a week would be much more entertaining.

Peter Guzzo

I'm tired of guest hosts!

Dave Mason

Not as interesting as the host and guest think it is

Moz

Damn, this lady can talk...

Alex Nelson

Wasn't hot on the guest host idea unless it was Bruce, and here it is. Hope it's a good one. He's always a fantastic guest if not the best one.

BrienPiechos

Bret, you have excellent taste in friends; your friends have excellent taste in actresses.

Scott Chrabas

I'm going to listen on my skydive. Will say more. After my skydive.

Travis Films

Bruce is one of my favorite podcast guests (to say nothing of his great writing) so I’m very much looking forward to this one.

Casey

I tried to give this one a shot, but I couldn’t stick with it.

Justin

A gift!

Fernando

Okay, will listen cos I love Bruce but would it really be so hard to just get Bret on the zoom?

Rory Kiberd

All due to respect to the guest hosts but this isn’t really what we’re paying for, is it?

Joe Division

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Loved Bruce and Bev. A rare look.

Trezerand

As someone who is codependent and someone who has done art to try to win someone over/4 love - finding this unexpectedly relatable - this episode is forsure a treasure of anecdotes - HEY BIG SPENDER

Seneca Garcia

Bruce should do his own podcast. Such a great guest. Glad this is a two parter

Timothy

Excellent episode she was great , as well as the guest host Bruce.

PETER GREER

Entertaining stories.

Thomas Edwards

wow, two pseudo intellectual retarded fuck-wads in a row...talk about not giving a shit, Bret...unless you're stupid enough to buy into them (well, at least to give 'em a guest host spot 😂😂)

Neil G.

What’s wrong with Bruce?

N.M. Janice.

OMG even worse than Sam. Nooooooooo
