S7E27: Image of an Artist with Robert Asahina

Fiction editor Robert Asahina and Bret Easton Ellis discuss surrendering to the magnetic pull of literary life in New York City, writing film criticism before it became tarnished by publicists and cultivating a marketable myth at a fateful photo shoot. Part 1 of 2.

Hello. I have an anti-woke novel. Hope you'll read it. It's free! https://ojalart.com/hot-button-press2023-serialsmick-mcgraththe-deplorableinstallment-1/

Love that Bret usually puts his guest’s work first during guest episodes but as a fan of his work it’s really great to finally have an an episode devoted to sharing the history of his career. Enjoyed it !!

Harold B

Hope Robert Asahina comes back.

When’s Bret going to review Oppenheimer?

Christopher Ward

Can’t wait for Part II!

Rules of Attraction is probably my favorite novel by Bret. I always go back to it and I will never tire of Paul. In fact, I want a sequel with Paul after college. Great interview.

Phoenix

To be fair, the young people in Brooklyn today will be talking like this about some new neighborhood in 10 or so years.

N.M. Janice.

One of the many reasons we’re phasing them out.

Michael

Uneven numbers drive me crazy.

I just use the podcast app on my iPhone. Once you’re subscribed you get given a link that you can copy into your podcast player of choice, and the stream updates there just like normal.

Hi everyone, I am new to the Patreon. I have loved listening to the BEE podcast but have exhausted all the free episodes available on Spotify and wanted access to more. Can someone please tell me how I can listen to the podcast episodes posted on here directly on my phone? What app do I need to download to connect my Patreon to my phone? Thanks everyone!

John Baiger

Do these old people ever grasp that the snide way they talk about “Brooklyn” is the exact same way Uptowners used to talk about their beloved “Village”?

Happyhead

Bret, let the man speak and stop rambling!

Nick

Did Bret murder people at Bennington ? How many ?

Lionel

Fantastic guest! Great hearing about New York back in the 70s/80s and the behind the scenes details at S&S. Also very cool to hear Bret talk more about the Rules of Attraction - out of all his books I feel like he talks about it the least (even though he loves the movie adaption).

Bazayer

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Thanks so much for sharing that! 🙏

Patrick

Hey Nikki, can you send me an email with your references? Cheers.

Hey fellow fans of Bret, I'm an author looking for beta-readers for my latest novel: The Order of Chaos - a book very much in the vein of Bret's writing. It's a darkly comedic thriller, and follows Tristian X, a member of a highly structured secret society known as The Order of Chaos, behind all the most chaotic and disruptive events of the past century. Set against the backdrop of the chaos and mental whiplash that have permeated the past few years, The Order of Chaos condenses these feelings into a central character who is hopefully for today what Patrick Bateman was to the 80s. Like the world, Tristian is insecure, violent, mean, hurting, needy, confounding, orphaned, lonely, and just fucking weird. He listens to a constant barrage of concerning, insane, and absurd news and opinions from a podcast he plays in one earphone whenever he's outside. The structure of the book mirrors the chaos of the past six years and its temporal distortions, with the order of the chapters being faux-randomized. If you'd be interested in giving it a read for free and offering up any feedback you have, just shoot me an email (contact@hwhinder.com) and I'd be honored to send you a copy. Cheers.

More nostalgia please.

N.M. Janice.

Loved hearing the moment Bret decided to stop picking him up on dates.

Bookth

This was a good one. The making of the myth...

Vincent Nappi

Some may complain that this is another episode about nostalgia, but I like it very much. Bret is on a great run of episodes over the past several weeks.

Steve

“Bob, it wasn’t there…” New BEE shirt idea.
