The B.E.E. Podcast - 4/6/22 - Simon Rex - SILVER

Bret assails last week's Academy Awards broadcast as a disgusting display of the once-proud movie industry's agonizing death spiral. Actor Simon Rex and Bret discuss the gorgeous expressionism of Red Rocket and embracing the solitude of the desert to escape the relentless bullshit of Hollywood.

This guy Simon Rex seems like a bit self involved man child but I guess I give him credit for the self awareness

Abbie Barnes

Just listened into this. Yes loved the episode bc it was just very personal and very real.

Vincent

that would be legendary

Brandon Cook

that’s why i’ve always loved his podcast. the way he speaks and presents ideas is enveloping and engrossing. he’s a brilliant writer and speaker

Brandon Cook

he’s a mess but has kept it a secret for a long time. he’ll have a hard time rejuvenating his image after the slap, if ever tbh.

Brandon Cook

loved this guy when he was on MTV. i wasn’t even aware of his acting career expect for scary movie. his story is insane, from nothing to something.

Brandon Cook

Loved this episode. Nice to hear an actor be so open with no guard up. I remember him as a VJ when I was in high school and thinking he was so hot haha. He seems like a genuinely nice person. Will def check our Red Rocket.

I wonder whether it’d help if someone like Danny Boyle or Charlie Brooker was organising the Oscars.

Richard Evans

Quotas work. Also, the consistent assuredness with which Bret dismisses racism is cringey. Plus, Will Smith was a complete dick before the Oscars. Nothing’s changed there.

Peter Walker

So Charlie Sheen needs to come on to the show now right?

David

Watched Red Rocket because of this. Yet another solid recommendation.

Alex Bielovich

Great episode. Also, Ken Russell has been discussed off and on, but finally got Ken Russell’s The Devils. It is to cancel culture what The Scarlett Letter was to the blacklist. https://youtu.be/Q5G3OMyVn_o

I saw Red Rocket and fell in love with Rex Simon the actor. I never heard of him before and as a director I would kill to work with him. Thank you for this wonderful interview.

aaron weisblatt

Thoroughly enjoyed your breakdown of the Oscars, Will aside. Pitch perfect analysis.

Nick B

Bret can really make you fascinated in something you don't know much about

Chris De Burgha

Fantastic episode. Bret has hit a new high!!!! The discussion about aging and losing friends really hit home.

Clive Desmond

Nice breakdown of the Oscar’s. I haven’t watched it in over ten years but when I was a kid it was one the of the biggest nights of the year. It was like Christmas such was the magic of it. Now all it has become is calling people racist and unwoke for having opinions Hollywood doesn’t like while giving awards to movies nobody watches. It’s a real shame and as Bret says it should be for real movie lovers. Unfortunately Hollywood doesn’t care about real movie lovers. Why Will Smith wasn’t ejected from it is unbelievable too.

David Willis

I don’t watch the Oscars because I don’t care anymore • But I sure as heck saw the slap heard around the world • I hear Will Smith is in rehab •

Clive Desmond

First time actors……

Paul Wasowicz

56 minutes of a brilliant opening

Anthony Punnett

Love Simon Rex, loved the movie. He’s a cool guy & should have got more recognition for Red Rocket. I hope this is a spring board for new projects!

AshSebash

Wow, Simon Rex is a really lovely, interesting man. What a great episode- well done Bret and team.

Hi Bret’s team. I have a complaint that’s more Patreon’s fault than your own (I have complained to them after their latest software update but to no avail so far). Could you format the titles of the episode “Matthew David Wilder: The 3/22 BEE Podcast” rather than having the guest’s name last? The way it’s displayed on Patreon with the first few characters it’s very annoying to find old episodes or figure out which ones you have half listened to. Re format could be a quick fix from your side

Keith campbell

I love it when Bret is completely charmed by a guest

Nikki Ferrari

What a charming man. I loved this interview!

There are so many entertainment options now. 30 and 40 years ago we had about 5 channels. The Oscars seemed important then because not a lot else was on.

Ben

Maybe that's the case, but I feel like the votes for Coda were sincere regardless of what people may think of the overall quality. My feeling is that the academy members simply got exhausted from watching the other films and the ease and pleasantness of Coda just ended being a breath of fresh air ,and what they actually ended up enjoying the most

Alex Waller

Nice!

grainpulp

I think "pg-13 Disney Channel Original Movies" is what we can expect from an Oscars now obsessed with inclusivity and playing everything super safe.

Christopher Webster

Nice recap of the Oscars. I think it's kind of interesting how the Academy has embraced the laid back feel good movie over the more traditionally artistic subversive film. I enjoyed Coda, but it was a surprising win considering it was basically a pg-13 Disney Channel Original Movie. Those movies were cool but definitely had a formula where they combined an activity, sport, etc. and some kind of culture shock when people from different backgrounds met around said activity. Coda fit that formula to a t. Totally fine by me that the academy chose it, preferable considering the nominees this year, but very telling that it was chosen over the other movies which were for the most part packed with subversion, social commentary, and aloofness. I don't think that would have happened a decade ago. No way The Artist takes it over Moneyball or The Descendants in today's world.

Alex Waller

Looking forward to this one- both the monologue and guest are sure to be great b

Mary Walker

I re-subscribed hoping Bret would do an extended commentary on the Oscars. This did not disappoint! One could even consider it a bit of a throwback to those excellent PodcastOne opening monologues.

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run
