B.E.E. PODCAST CHRISTMAS TRIBUTE FREEBIE: JOAN AND EVE

With the December departures of Joan Didion and Eve Babitz, we pay tribute to these legendary stylists of 20th century prose by releasing Bret's March 2019 episode with Vanity Fair's Lili Anolik (host of the 2021 podcast Once Upon a Time... at Bennington College) where they discuss Lili's close relationship with Eve and Joan's indelible influence on the literature and culture of Los Angeles and beyond. This episode is free for all to listen... New episode with GoGo's drummer Gina Schock will be available for Gold subscribers tomorrow, Silver on Tuesday. Merry Christmas to you all, and we wish you health and safety as the calendar turns to 2022.

“The Dregs.. the Dregs” - had not heard this first time around, or heard about Lindsay Lohan’s reality show — am howling at the incident where she decides to free the lobsters from the restaurants

And yet. And yet . . . As Helen Andrews puts it: "If you want a stylish female essayist of late Sixties vintage who never allowed herself to be seduced by liberal pieties, you want Renata Adler."

Michael Walsh

Ha, I finished The Secret History this morning. Close second behind The Goldfinch.

Alex Bielovich

I don’t blame you, however as an American it’s endlessly entertaining. At least the first 5-7 seasons I saw. I’m also a huge fan of Love Island. Don’t hate me 😁

Phoenix

Something is off with her however this episode was great

Fernando

Agree with you on the Original Gossip Girl. I got sucked right into that at one point. The new one doesn’t really hold it for me. But the original is a guilty pleasure. And thank you for reminding me about Made in Chelsea. I was going to check that out. Merry Christmas!

Went down a bunny tunnel of Bennington podcast - and then ended up reading Secret History for the first time - I’m glad I saved reading it until now - one of my fav novels - great episode, cool guest - Happy Holidays to anyone reading this

Brett will inherit the collection of nail clippers Eve Babitz purchased from the dollar store and a hairball of James Toback's pubic hairs

I don’t share BEE’s love of Lily. Very shallow person

Bret, if you want a fun TV show that’s the opposite of today’s sad culture, watch the original Gossip Girl on HBO Max. I just watched it for the first time at age 42 and effing loved it. It’s ridiculous, sexy, and funny with a great soundtrack. I swear, it’s better than anything on TV today. And if you can get your hands on Made in Chelsea, that’s another ridiculous binger. Basically the hills in London with an even better British Spencer.

Phoenix

Really reaalllly

Fernando

Bret, hon, have you seen Arthur Penn’s 1969 film Alice’s Restaurant?

LM

Thanks so much, guys, and Happy Holidays! What a gift to be prompted to go back and revisit one of the best episodes of this podcast. After listening to this in '19, it now occurs to me that it led me to read Hollywood's Eve, Slow Days, Fast Company, and a few more by Didion. Lily is a fabulous guest, and it's worth a relisten not only to be reminded of Joan and Eve but to hear how good a guest can be when there's so much shared interest between Bret and his guest.

R. M., are you serious? I haven't made it that far yet. If Lili says things like that, I'm not sure how seriously I can take her. That reminds me of my biggest eye roll watching Oprah in the 90s say something like there's a distinction between a movie and a FILM, like "film" you say with your pinky next to your bottom lip. Does that mean Bonfire of the Vanities isn't a book because much of it was serialized in Rolling Stone first? Rocky and Bullwinkle not a best picture contender because it didn't screen before the New Year. Gah!!!! Damn technicalities!! To be clear, I respect Lili Anolik as a writer, but some are going to take her seriously for not much reason in this case, at least to me. It reminds me of Walter Murch's near hysterics when Hollywood started using Final Cut. You can't nominate Netflix in the Oscars! It's not going to preserve the old ways of doing things whether you choose to recognize Bret's work valid as a novel or not.

Merry Christmas Bret, Todd and Adam!

Gotta admit. I take back what I said about timewarps … This episode is excellent!! This interview is hummin! Cooks!

Brian Rooney

So good thank you BEE

PETER GREER

Gina Schock Drinking Game. Take a “sip” when … Bret mentions listening to the GoGos while driving … (add to the thread listeners!)

Brian Rooney

Funny, I just watched the first half of the “The Center will not Hold” a few weeks ago. It was only because of Bret’s podcast. Now I need to finish it..

Mark DeCaro

My vote for best guest ever

Todd

Thanks Bret <3

Andrew Dunn

Lili Anolik suggesting at the end of her Once Upon... podcast that THE SHARDS isn't a novel because Bret released it via audio on a podcast has really stuck in my craw.

R. M.

Thank you, Bret. Merry Christmas!

E

Joseph A Aisenberg
