Bret reviews King Richard as Will Smith takes position to finally ride his decades of movie star bankability to the Academy Award that has long eluded him. Actress/Filmmaker/Podcaster Dasha Nekrasova and Bret discuss Hollywood's glaring charm deficit, paying paranoid homage to Stanley Kubrick under the specter of Jeffrey Epstein and landing a role on HBO's popular Succession.

This was great, a great guest.

Thanks for introducing me to Alex Jones and InfoWars! This is a big revelation! He is doing important work. Thanks!

Antonio Primavera

I can't believe BEE is hyping Succession. That show is the most basic TV there is. It's like an NBC show. There are good TV shows out there. The people are ugly and uninteresting, like the real wealthy elites. So stupid, boring, and don't know how to enjoy their wealth...like the real elites. If it got into child-porn rings, torturing peasants for fun, or being the shadow government that makes all elections null...maybe. That would at least be more real. As it is, it's so fucking banal. Who cares?

Antonio Primavera

Bret - Loved the pod, this is the first one I've bought since you paywalled. Dasha and Anna are wonderful. I hope you can talk to Jack from the Perfume Nationalist in 2022.

Pablockchain Serrato

Best interview in a while. Thanks for introducing me to Red Scare. This world needs WAAAY more of your social commentary. Please interview Camille Paglia as soon as you can.

Michael Bronspigel

Can you summarise the reference? I gotta know.

Tom Davidson

The Dasha interview is among my recent favorites. Thanks!!

Kathryn

I wrote about “King Richard” and the Mythologizing of the Black Patriarch.” Take a look. https://gmgeiko.medium.c. om/king-richard-and-the-mythologizing-of-the-black-patriarch-12d4d893f7d8

Gesha-Marie Bland

On the treacly “King Richard,” when did biopics become hagiography?

Gesha-Marie Bland

I can name 8 people right now that grew up in Las Vegas, 5 are girls and none of them talk with her accent! What on earth causes that accent?

Griffin

That is the million dollar question!

George Quartz

Which one is which?

Adam

OMG I can’t wait to hear the world’s coolest podcaster ever interview the world’s dreamiest podcaster ever! [double swoon]

George Quartz

Moonrise Kingdom!

Brooke Clifford Porter

That’s my second favorite movie this year.

Cody LaDuke

Please get back to us this time. It's important.

Adam

Not sure what's so great about finding a couple of athletic girls with abnormally high testosterone levels and then introducing them to steroids, but ok. "As rumors of steroid abuse swirled around the WTA in the late '90s and early 2000s, the WTA finally took action and called for offseason steroids testing. That testing was blocked by the top three women's tennis players at the time. Those players were Serena and Venus Williams, along with Jennifer Capriati."

BrienPiechos

I rewatched recently and I agree.

K.D.F.

Hey BP, yeah, I agree things are changing and I'm definitely okay with that. You have to adjust for the times and hopefully the theatrical experience can do the same. I always enjoy hearing Bret's thoughts and like comparing notes on new films. The tone and dismissal just seemed a little over the top this time, especially because we're getting lots of mid to high budget original stories made by real directors.

Alex Waller

I wish the intro was about 30 min longer.

steve bush

Alex, I think "comically doomed" is the best you could hope for at this time and in this political environment. And i don't think BEE offers his take on things or his experiences as anything more than they are. I mean, "proof?" He's "reading the room," as we say. None of us wants to hear the film industry as we know it is over. I don't think it's over. However we ARE experiencing a seismic change regardless. Bret is just the messenger.

bpvalentine

Dasha gives off Parker Posey vibes… and I love it.

Daniel

I don't mind Dasha's vocal fry. She's hot

George Barnett

I like Bret.

Adam

The BBE reference from Stanford was the best part of the show.

Mary Walker

BEE reference in Just Like That… SATC revival. Feels like home. Sadly.

Daniel

Bret’s reviews for King Richard and House of Gucci are spot on. As a person who worked in the professional tennis world from 2003-2010, Richard Williams was widely regarded as a wheeler dealer, and first class wagon-hitcher who would be on the gravy train Mt Rushmore alongside Earl Woods, Kris Jenner and Jamie Spears. The only thing I could think could be worse than the time I had to sit through Richard’s disjointed pitch for a tennis academy would be sitting through this movie.

TL

Dasha is vocal fry in human form

Keith campbell

To clarify I was referring to the "Moonlight-ization" of the victim as hero in general. In fact, I've long held tremendous respect for Richard Williams and saw him as something of the ultimate anti-victim – making a dent in the world despite his position. The film weakened this aspect imo.

Adam Chin

In fairness, I didn't see how King Richard was really a victim movie or anything like that. Richard makes some broad comments about growing up in the South and running from the Klan. The Williams family gets some entitled stares when they arrive at one of those big tournaments, but that's really about it and that didn't seem all that unrealistic. For me, the thing King Richard really lacked was dramatic tension. Richard trained the Williams sisters to be great tennis players, and they became great tennis players without much conflict. They were pros by the time they were freshmen in high school. I personally think the tennis world is pretty cool so it was fun to spend time in it, but because this is a movie and we need tension it would have probably been better to focus on players whose arc wasn't just success, success and money, and then more success and money.

Alex Waller

IMO the only legit film making a critique of race relations was the alleged original cut of American History X. Legend has it the final scene was cut where, after Danny's murder, Derek reshaves his head. The cycle continues. No other filmmaker dares tell the story of race in America with even a splinter of Kaye's honesty. In fact the only part of the film that does not ring true is the prison rape scene. There are countless prison documentaries and autobiographies and without fail they all claim that gang rape among (at least) the White Supremacist gangs is a myth, as well as Latino gangs and the lion's share of homosexual activity behind bars is consensual. But Hollywood functions as a propaganda arm of the state and if they were not constantly scaring you with the prospect of rape prison would lose half of it's power to frighten and dissuade.

BrienPiechos

As a fellow old man like Bret I think I can safely say it's because we hate change and fiddling with tech. You're very likely 100% correct and we would love the results. Still not gonna do it though!

BrienPiechos

Just re-watched The Long Goodbye with intentions of a follow up second go around with Inherent Vice. I HOPE that I connect with it this time. The first viewing felt like an embarrassing chore.

Adam Chin

Victim as hero is the worst trope in my nearly 40 years of cinemania. Great post.

Adam Chin

Great show. Love Dasha. Bret is there any reason that you don't have a 4K projector set up at your place? Even as a man of modest means I was able to install a 120" screen with 4K/HDR. It's a MUCH superior way screen films at home and will save you from having to endure the unnecessary treks to the cinema.

Adam Chin

The two parties are the Republicrats and the Table Flippers.

Michael

I love PTA, but he makes what they called sleeper hits when it wasn’t just PTA making them. They aren’t big cinematic spectacles and they tend to require repeat viewings. I knew I would like Inherent Vice the 2nd time, but the first time was a slough.

Michael

This was my favorite episode in a long time. These should be longer, it’s not like anyone has any place they really have to be.

Michael

Just say it like it is. Nobody wants anther sanctimonious race sermon. Message movies are exhausting propaganda. Adding a dash of humanity by making an otherwise victim/hero central character less than noble isn't enough to cover for what is the same movie being made over and over for going on 20 years now. King Richard is a steaming pile of shit. The more the market is saturated with this type of agenda driven flick the thinner the crowds will be. And they know it, which is why previously successful franchises are being hijacked and used for the same purpose. They ruined Fargo, Penny Dreadful, the Terror, True Detective, and so many more. All the highly anticipated new shows like Wheel of Time and Foundation, and if the leaks are any indication including the GOT prequel, suffer this same shoe-horning of wokeism and eschew entertainment for "education." NOBODY WANTS THIS SHIT.

BrienPiechos

Yeah isn't it fucked up when a guy who you can't stand ends up being right about everything?

BrienPiechos

Great interview, huge fan of red scare so this was a delight. The movie intro in general was something Brett’s been talking about for years. It’s not a revelation anymore that people aren’t watching movies. Let’s move on to other current events, or other industries like music or publishing…or do what Bret does best, take us on a journey through a year that made an impact on him, or focus on a directors body of work. I love this podcast (I’ve been listening from the beginning) but I think it’s time to retire the movie business isn’t what it used to be intro. There are so many other things I’d love to hear Bret talk about.

Phoenix

I want a Brett monologue everyday I have to wait two weeks jeez

Fernando

Bret turned me onto Red Scare with his Anna interview

Alex Bielovich

I like the idea of more options. But until both parties are sane… I’ll take the party doing work over the party doing the - jerk (?)…

Brian Rooney

Man, as a red scare fan this episode was so enjoyable and satisfying. Loved all the tangents they went on and also the bits about Dasha’s early career and inspiration for her own work. The fact that Bret didn’t “chop it up” with Dasha..a lauded millennial filmmaker..about the future of good filmmaking, a constant gripe of his, seems like a missed opportunity. That said, Bret sounded fresher and like he was really enjoying himself compared to episodes with his more typical, older guests. Makes me wish the BEE podcast would go further in this direction…invite more of Dasha and Anna’s peers or their own RS guests on. Feels like there’s plenty of synergy between’s Bret’s views and the so-called Dirtbag Left (that term already feels really out of date) Anyway, grateful this episode happened.

Ryan

alex jones has many issues....to dare use words from Satanic Verses , by Salman Rushdi ;-"it is not nice to make fun of the afflicted"..

Alexander Julian

in america only democrats and republicans viable options , right? otherwise risk of splitting vote .... in coming elections democrats and the collectivistic futurism it prognosed to do not so good .. so future might hold one party ; a conservative liberty project..

Clive Desmond

Dang, I've really liked a lot the stuff I've seen over the past few months. Maybe August and September were a little dry, but I think it really picked at the end of September/beginning of October. Many Saints of Newark, Kate, The Card Counter, The Last Duel, Antlers, Last Night in Soho, No Time To Die, House of Gucci, Power of the Dog, and there's probably more I'm forgetting, plus there's a new Guillermo film and a new Matrix film to look forward to plus Licorice Pizza. It's not a bad time at all and I don't get where the heavy cynicism is coming from. While it's all subjective, these are for the most part more adult stories made by legitimate directors, and most of them have a solid budget behind them. They're almost all genre films. This is what almost everyone around here says they want including Bret. Maybe they weren't to everyone's liking, but I feel like that's another conversation, as there was undoubtable filmmaking craft on display throughout. If there's anything to potentially be concerned about is that the ongoing pandemic is still keeping adult audiences away, as almost all of these box offices were scary low. I thought the Dasha interview was okay. I appreciated that she elaborated on the jobs she was working and the crappy living situations she was in while she was figuring it out. A lot of times those details get passed over in general so that was interesting to hear. This is just my two cents, many may disagree with me, but I find a lot of the asides in these interviews kind of annoying and derailing. When Dasha was talking about her life and her take on current events the conversation had a really nice flow, but all of the random stuff trying to recollect who people were or who was at what restaurant or party and opinions on people's looks was a bit grinding. The conciseness and precision are the best aspects of this podcast so it's kind of a bummer when it dips into typical podcast banter you can hear anywhere.

Alex Waller

If Will Smith wins an Oscar it should have been for Six Degrees of Separation.

Edi Panta

So stoked for this!!

Shannon Madden

BENEDETTA was great. Very filthy.

Michael

And teach them some production values

Jack

I second this.

R. M.

Movies suck right now. I guess it's no coincidence that I continually watch straight to video westerns at redbox.

Ben

If you’re post-left, does that mean you’re post-democracy?

Brian Rooney

Yay. Two of my favorite opinion havers.

A B

Would be really interested in hearing a full review of Licorice Pizza. I wonder what made Bret so lukewarm about it. It seems like it’d be a match made in heaven for him: an auteur director making a 70s nostalgia trip, with similarities to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood etc etc.

Maxwell Rinehart

Three minutes in… duh - Bret’s right about everything. Thank goodness for this pod …

Brian Rooney

Red Scare crossover!!!
