Hey Bret,BEE use to live in the East Village, not the Lower East Side. While pointing out this discrepancy may seem petty, it's important to note that mistaking West Hollywood for Hollywood is sacrilege in LA. It's the end of 2021, LIVE BAIT on 23rd Street is now a Popeyes! WHAT'S EMPIRE?

No worries, it got the conversation going and that's what it's all about. Maybe you're right about Adam's bro entitlement, and you're definitely not wrong in saying the podcasting world has lots of bro-ness, and I'm saying that without judgement on the good or bad of bro-ness. But even if you think Adam lays the bro-ness on too much, within the BEE podcast world it is a welcome change of space from a whole lot of entitled people from Bret's world that come in there who are very opinionated but don't really elaborate with any interesting points.

I get it. He’s a regular joe. But he radiates his own type of entitlement. And that’s the bro ness I was referring to which the pod world is chock full of. Anyway it’s not that bad. Just venting. Love the show.

WH

Disagree, love the texture of Adam + Brett for the Q&As. Also think Adam is super funny with his call-outs and greetings (I lol’d heartily at “Camille Baby come down to Dohini”)

Steven Menelly

I agree with Alex and BrienPiechos that Adam brings a casual down-to-earth balance to the podcast, especially after an interview with some Ivy League/upper-middle-class guest who sees the world through a metropolitan art and lit. lens. He and Bret have really good chemistry too. Adam seems to be on the older range of the Millennial generation (Xennials) and understands context when discussing controversial pop culture or art, an attitude that jibes with Bret’s Gen-X sensibilities.

Billy Schafer

Lost me at "Pisces".

Michael Walsh

Agree with Alex. Adam strikes me as down to earth and reasonable. Someone who lives in the "real world." his interjections are so brief it's hardly worth mentioning IMO.

BrienPiechos

thank you Max ...

One of the best episodes ever! Amazing monologue, perfect guest for the pod, and a Q & A. Love these actors who are knowledgeable about film history and have so many stories. Reminds me of how good the Bogdanovich podcast was.

Mai Tai

Kinda depends. I mostly enjoy Adam's presence because he's a nice contrast to a lot of the guests. Even though I think the podcast is great, I think it could improve a lot with some guests who are more down to earth and approach Bret's questions in a different way. Jason Starr was one of my favorite episodes just because of this, Joe Lynch too. A lot of the guests do come across as entitled and stuffy, not there haven't been some more great interviews this year. Even though I really liked the Oppenheim and Jarecki interviews, even Oppenheim mentioned he went to Harvard and Jarecki said he spent time with Elon Musk. It would be nice to have some more people on the podcast who didn't just radiate privilege

Alex Waller

Too much Adam. Who’s w me? Solid producer but I don’t subscribe to hear him bro out

WH

Enjoyed thiis one. Adam confusing Patti Smith with Patty Smyth made me laugh. Smyth is married to McEnroe but was previously married to Richard Hell- topic in previous episode.

Mary Walker

Bret should try Patti Smith’s Year of the Monkey

re reading ; writer critic lover hater tweeter free-speaker transgressive WHITE privileged male...70s were truly different regarding the mores of child up bringing .... and the weather report by the state broadcasting organization featured a socially awkward scholar who would refer to a board dotted with striped bananas , crooked vectors and cloud icons, fastened to board by magnetic underside .. sometimes a banana would fall off the board.. and impact the floor with a clatter ..

Alexander Julian

Same. Great comfort podcast when you feel alone. Relish the loneliness.

Dirk

Monologue about Simon Rex?? Something to think about. He’s not the best interview, but maybe you could get something interesting out of him. Crazy life.

Mai Tai

Best opening monologue ever

George Barnett

Emma Cline would make a terrific guest too. Her story collection came out last year (which is fantastic); her novel is tangentially about Manson, so it would be interesting to hear her thoughts on OUATIH; and she’s friendly with Brian DePalma. She’s also involved in a fascinating #metoo lawsuit, which she may or may not be willing to talk about on the record. I say book her!

Graig Gilkeson

What a terrific deep dive into Gloria Grahame! Kudos to Dana Delaney for her extensive research, and kudos to Brett for having her on the pod.

Graig Gilkeson

This show summed up one nostalgia for me : https://youtu.be/vIvzRKIv1ZE

Pretty good rapport on this one. Unfortunately I have no idea who Dana is nor the actress they discussed. Would love to hear this style of enthusiasm and depth on certain authors, or between Bret and Pizzolatto about his influences for True Detective Season 1. I know Ligotti has been cited as a big part of that. The Q&A is always enjoyable.

BrienPiechos

What a delicious conversation. I love Grahame and this deep dive was wonderful to hear. NAKED ALIBI is one of her less-known treats, B-noir at its tawdry best.

Megan Abbott

Bret, that beginning was a beautiful piece of writing and made me tear up. Just wanna say that to you. Appreciate you and this podcast. My number one comfort podcast.

Michael

Recently watched the Criterion Noir Marathon + finally caught up on Blow Out which has been discussed a few times here — thankful for this podcast as it has been a consciousness appendage guiding my professional as well as my personal life - sending positive vibes from Texas for Todd and for you and Adam - Love this podcast - Cheers
